I've known this for quite a while but never mentioned it. I feel if Berry wanted to acknowledge his relation to President Carter it would have been public long ago. Why he never did is his business, but I do find it all very fascinating.
I served as one of the program managers at The Motown Museum, and they host a spoken word poetry competition in Detroit called Motown MIC. The 2019 winner, Mikhaella Norwood, won with a powerful piece she wrote that focuses on this history:
