Teardrops on your letter-hank ballard...we go a long way back-blood stone...you got me walkin-the chi-lites.
Perhaps my favorite Manhattans song. And I love a LOT of Manhattans songs.

This one is my favorite version of this song, which I don't think many people heard [[so it may not be a "classic", Marv). Gerald Alston, like Levi Stubbs, has a voice that resonates deep within me.

And speaking of covers of musical songs, this is another that blows me away. This album made me a huge fan of Lou Rawls after he'd been singing for decades.

And this was the single from that album. A classic that came right at the end of the '70s soul era. By the way, I couldn't argue with someone who believes that the '70s were the best decade for soul music. But that would be one hell of a debate, wouldn't it?

I know you remember this one! James Brown - "Make It Funky"

No introduction needed.......Isaac Hayes: "Shaft!"

Ah, "Shaft" has reminded me of this one... some smooth, groovy, blaxploitation Soul courtesy of Willie Hutch...

I love the construction of "Shaft". Such a patient intro leading into the verse. There is nothing about that song that could have been done better, in my opinion.
A big New York City classic! Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band and "Cherchez La Femme" from '76:

Classic! From 1970 Curtis Mayfield - "The Makings of You"

Back in 1959 The Flamingos had this great hit. "I Only Have Eyes for You"

This one was before me, but I loved listening to it when when I was in college in the 80s. From 1957 Little Anthony and the Imperials and "Tears on My Pillow"

What it's all about! Arthur Conley-"Sweet Soul Music" 1967 Heaven!

This is one of the first songs I can remember playing off my parents' record player [[didn't have a stereo in those days) and it's one of my favorite records to this day.

Gone way too soon. A member of the 27 Club.

Another favorite by the Drifters is "There Goes My Baby". I couldn't list my 10 favorite Drifters songs because they had so many. I'd have to list my 10 favorite by different lineups [[of which Clyde McPhatter was leader of my favorite version). This song is remarkable for me because the recording is kind of, well, horrible but the song is still great.

And I couldn't give you a favorite Temptations song, but if somebody said this was their best, I wouldn't argue with them. Another song that I remember listening to as a very young boy.

My sister had a little record player [[calling it a turntable gave it too much justice) and she used to play this all the time:

Inner Life - I'm Caught Up [[In a One Night Love Affair) 1979

Another Detroit original.................Alicia Myers - "I want to thank you"

Love between a boy and girl-the temprees
Speaking of the Temprees, their cover of "Dedicated To The One I Love" is remarkable in its arrangement. This is a beautiful song that I didn't hear until I found it on a Stax compilation I bought about 25 years ago.

And I have to add this classic:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MHJ4H11OPc
Here's an '80s classic that I used to like a lot. Too bad the singer was too coked out and a grifter or he could have had a good career.

Can't help but love you-the whispers.
