Greatest Hits & Anthology - Martha Reeves & The Vandellas

The UK saw two volumes of Greatest Hits from Martha Reeves & The Vandellas. There was also a one disc anthology [[but the US two disc had been available here if I recall correctly - I think that was the one I had back then).

There have been some great CD sets but no equivalent CD release of the vinyl Anthology set. I'm concentrating on the CD sets that have more than one CD here [[though I really like the "Ultimate" single CD series).

Here's a GIF of some of the sets and track listings for comparison below. One of them stands out in being more comprehensive I would say but there's plenty of previously unreleased material included along the way. The Hip-O Gold set is a little strange - includes non Motown solo work but omits "No One There". In fact none of these sets have "No One There" but it was a UK single release.

My absolute favorite is the 1975 ANTHOLOGY. Previous to that, I only had their albums WATCHOUT! and RIDIN' HIGH. So hearing many of the songs was a surprise to me, especially the single version of JIMMY MACK.

The LIVE WIRE set is also a fave as I was finally able to get a clean copy of A TEAR FOR THE GIRL, plus the previously unreleased BABY [[DON'T YOU LEAVE ME).

Obviously the more songs the better for almost any collection. So with that in mind, I assume the purple Anthology album listed above is a UK version because the US one has two full LPs and a total of 26 songs. As for the others, Live Wire is a nice collection because of having B sides and in many cases those can be well worth having. I do notice however that He Doesn't Love Her Anymore is missing and that is a great song. With the Gold collection I did not mind the added solo songs, especially since it included the two singles from her first solo album. Never did get the appeal of Love Blind so I could think of others that could have taken its place, but you can't have everything. The 50th Anniversary collection would have to be the best for me because of having the B sides [[including He Doesn't) as well as ALL those Lost and Found tracks.

I do love the Greatest Hits Vol. 2 release, just based on the cover alone. Sandra Tilley was especially servin' it up! Stunning. However, the 2 CD Gold set is a nice collection.

My favorite is the 50th Anniversary Singles Collection. Even though I started my Martha & The Vandellas collection with Anthology [[the US edition from 1974), the 50th Anniversary set has all of the A & B sides, track-by-track annotation, a third disc of songs from the vaults & alternate takes and the stereo mix of "Jimmy Mack" [[the single version).

There's an error above because STML11060 Anthology Vinyl Album 1977 should read STML12060.

I like the "Live Wire" set because it starts earlier than the others. The UK albums didn't even include "I'll Have to Let Him Go" which is one of my favourite tracks. The Gold set seems to include the album version of that track.
