It's tennis time at the 2016 Doodle Fruit Games! The star of today’s event is Pineapple. With a sweet forehand slice and a drop shot that turns opponents upside-down, Pineapple is primed to serve up some excitement. Or will Pineapple's spiky temper sour the match? "I'll keep my cool as long as I don't get called for a fruit fault," Pineapple said this morning. "I can't help it. Despite my headband, sometimes my fronds fall over the line!" Minor shake-ups aren't likely to keep Pineapple from running rings around the competition.

Now, Grape’s dedication to the sport has landed the bite-sized powerhouse at the 2016 Doodle Fruit Games, and Grape couldn’t be more excited.
“Back home on the vine, I used to dream of competing with the entire fruit stand cheering me on,” Grape said. “I’m ready to juice the competition!”
Of course, none of this would be possible without Grape’s trusty sidekick. Spider and Grape have been inseparable since they landed in the same crate. “We’ve put in the practice — now we just have to get out there and crush our jumps!”

Lemon dives straight in with goggles and game face ON. Starting strong with a masterful dodge of ice chunks and a sharp swerve around rubber duckies, this citrus is demonstrating some serious zest.
Lemon peels ahead, lapping the lowest time…but oh no! Ice ahead at the 60m mark. Will it be a sour fate? No! A tongue-tingling twist in the plot and Lemon escapes the squeeze. Left stroke, right stroke, the old “under over”—What. A. Splash. The juicy secret to victory? “It’s all about that daily rind,” reveals record-smashing Lemon.

Orange tees off sending Blueberry catapulting into the green. Hole-y moly what a putt. “Two can play this game, but only one can win it”—boasts ripe and ready Blueberry. And boy is this little one on a roll: tilting and turning with im-pickable precision. Hot jam! Blueberry lands the first ace of the game and the shrubs go wild. A stealth pivot past the threat of Watermelon's smash is certainly no skin off this fruit’s back. But can Blueberry stay the course? Or will the pressure to take home the win turn into a bogey filled performance? There’s only one way to find out.

If you’re just joining us, assorted fruit are making a splash in the water polo event, with rising star Apple leading the pack. Though Apple’s taken a fair share of bruises in the past, the team’s strategy in the water is looking exceptionally polished today. Here’s Apple swimming forward, gliding side to side, all the while moving up and down in the water -- it's the famous “bob” maneuver! Apple strikes. Grape flies past the startled defenders, banks off the right wall, and squishes softly against the back net. It’s good! Another crisp goal for Apple!

We're juiced for today's featured event: BMX! Coconut's been a bit of an underfruit this year, but we expect it to get heated out there on those jumps. Watching this fruit shred the dunes, it’s clear that destiny has plucked Coconut from its tree and set it on a path to Fruit Games gold. According to friends and family, from the time Coconut was still green, everyone could see that this BMXer was intended for so much more than a fruit basket.
“When I got on the bike, I never looked back. I could feel it deep under my husk. The wind in my hairs as I'm catching air on a jump is like nothing else in this great big fruit bowl of ours,” shares Coconut.
Will Coconut be toasted or will it prove it’s the cream of the crop? One thing's for sure: this well-rounded competitor is ready to roll.

Bellini’s Norma. Verdi’s Otello and Falstaff. Puccini’s Turandot. All classics from opera’s golden age - and all works that debuted at the Teatro Alla Scala in Milan, a masterpiece itself since its inauguration in 1778.
Today’s Doodle honors La Scala’s legendary stage, known both for its size and the distinction of its players. The opera house’s treasured halls have hosted some of the world’s most inspirational opera, ballet, and classical performances over its long existence. Gloria Fuertes' 99th birthday
https://www.google.com/logos/doodles...37280-hp2x.gif
Gloria Fuertes remembered the typewriter she rented at a young age as her “first toy.” It didn’t take long for her to realize she could make its keys sing. That same year, she wrote her first verse.
Her love of narrative informed her life’s work: teaching and entertaining children, first through the printed word and later through stage and television. The result was some of Spain’s most beloved tales for children.
Today's Doodle is inspired by Fuertes’ inspired public readings that brought the magic of her words to life for the kids.

Mukesh's 93rd Birthday
https://www.google.com/logos/doodles...11328-hp2x.jpg
Decades before single-name stars Madonna and Prince became superstars, there was the mononymous Mukesh, one of Bollywood’s most acclaimed playback singers. Mukesh first rose to fame as the singing voice of actor, Raj Kapoor in the smash hit Andaz [1949], a Hindi film about a tragic love triangle.
Born Mukesh Chand Mathur in Delhi, India on July 22, 1923, Mukesh was discovered by Motilal, an actor and distant relative, when he sang at his sister’s wedding. The talent that earned him the nickname “The Man with the Golden Voice” took time to develop. Early on, he studied with classical musician Pandit Jagannath Prasad, and for years emulated his idol, singer K.L. Saigal. Working with music director Naushad Ali, who gave him the songs for Andaz, he eventually came into his own.
In 1974, Mukesh won the National Film Award in India for Best Male Playback singer for his song "Kai Baar Yuhi Dekha Hai" from the film Rajnigandha. He followed that up with wins in 1976 at the Filmfare Awards for four songs, most notably "Kabhi Kabhie Mere Dil Mein,” the title track of the film Kabhie Kabhie and the inspiration for today’s Doodle.

Roger Raveel’s 95th birthday
https://www.google.com/logos/doodles...352.2-hp2x.png
One of Belgium’s most revered painters in the period following World War II, Roger Raveel used white space to great effect. From the mid-20th century until the early 2000’s, Raveel created a body of work that extended beyond the canvas to include ceramics and installations. Drawing inspiration from the world around him, he returned to the same universal motifs, depicting everyday objects in vivid colors and contoured lines. Raveel’s playful, thought-provoking style evolved throughout his career, from abstract to figurative, and is often identified with the pop art movement.
Born on July 15, 1921 in Machelen-aan-de-Leie, Belgium, today’s Doodle celebrates what would have been Raveel’s 95th birthday. His singular work is showcased at the Roger Raveel museum in his hometown, surrounded, of course, by plenty of white space.

Bastille Day 2016
https://www.google.com/logos/doodles...040.2-hp2x.gif
A year after revolutionaries stormed the Bastille in 1789, this historic event and all it represented, was remembered and celebrated in France as the Fête de la Fédération. It’s because of this that the French national anthem is La Marseillaise, and that the flag is colored blue, white, and red.
Following the simple graphic style often seen in French newspaper illustration and echoing the style of Jean-Jacques Sempé, Doodler Helene Leroux aims for today’s Bastille Day Doodle to bring together the themes of Liberté, Unité, and Fraternité. It represents the importance of people coming together to celebrate togetherness and freedom on this most important of French holidays.

Bastille Day 2015
https://www.google.com/logos/doodles...05760-hp2x.gif
Happy Bastille Day!
The name Bastille day commemorates the beginning of the French Revolution with the Storming of the Bastille in 1789. On the same day the next year, the Fête de la Fédération, celebrated the unity of the French people. To commemorate both events, this day is simply called Le quatorze juillet [the fourteenth of July].
Today's doodle is by a guest artist, French illustrator, animator and director Loup Blaster [Louise Druelle]. She created 3 separate looping animations representing the devise [[or motto) from the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen: Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité. Each animation shows a principle of the French Republic. Here's what she has to say about each one:
Before creating these animations, I thought about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The first article reads: "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood." This, and my own personal experiences, served as my inspiration for each animation.
http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Cfd...RuSrBgNBMLQ=s0
Fraternité
The hands symbolize brotherhood, happiness and togetherness. It's a beautiful and powerful feeling to be part of a big crowd sharing in commemoration, protest or celebration.
http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/mbN...hFy1sOlc1mp=s0
Égalité
I used the globe to remember that we are all together here on Earth, and it is the only one we have.

Anniversary of Prince's Passing
https://www.google.com/logos/doodles...088.4-hp2x.gif
Prince Rogers Nelson [June 7, 1958 – April 21, 2016], mononymously known as Prince, was an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, dancer, actor, and director. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest musicians of his generation. Considered a guitar virtuoso, he was well known for his eclectic work across multiple genres, flamboyant and androgynous persona, and wide vocal range which included a far-reaching falsetto and high-pitched screams.
"Purple Rain" is a song by American musician Prince and his backing band the Revolution. It is the title track from the 1984 album of the same name, which in turn is the soundtrack album for the 1984 film of the same name starring Prince, and was released as the third single from the album. The song is a power ballad that combines rock, R&B, gospel, and orchestral music.
"Purple Rain" reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for two weeks, being kept off the top spot by "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" by Wham! It reached No. 1 in Belgium and the Netherlands. It is certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America [RIAA] and is considered to be one of Prince's signature songs. Following Prince's death in April 2016, "Purple Rain" rose to No. 1 on the US and UK iTunes Charts, allowing it to re-enter the Billboard Hot 100, where it reached No. 4. It also re-entered the UK Singles Chart at No. 6, placing two spaces higher than its original peak of No. 8. In France, where it originally peaked at No. 12, "Purple Rain" reached No. 1 around a week after Prince's death.
"Purple Rain" is ranked at No. 144 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and is included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. During the 2007 Super Bowl halftime show, for which Prince was the featured performer, "Purple Rain" was the last song of his set; the event became especially notable when actual rain started to fall during the performance while the stage stadium were lit up with purple lights, and the show continues to top lists of the best Super Bowl halftime shows of all time.Prince performed the song as the opening of a medley of his hits with Beyoncé at the 2004 Grammy Awards. It was also the final song he performed live, taking place at the end of his final performance in Atlanta on April 14, 2016, one week before he died.

Leonardo da Vinci's 553rd Birthday
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ju...2Wz-lhX6g=s660
Leonardo da Vinci was an Italian polymath of the High Renaissance who was active as a painter, draughtsman, theorist, engineer, scientist, sculptor and architect. While his fame initially rested on his achievements as a painter, he also became known for his notebooks, in which he made drawings and notes on a variety of subjects, including anatomy, astronomy, botany, cartography, painting, and paleontology. Leonardo's genius epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal, and his collective works compose a contribution to later generations of artists rivaled only by that of his younger contemporary and fellow founder of the High Renaissance, Michelangelo.

Brazil's Independence Day 2015
https://www.google.com/logos/doodles...13504-hp2x.jpg
Orchids! Palm trees! Passion flowers! There’s no landscape in the world quite as colorful as Brazil’s, whose independence we celebrate today. In 1822, from the banks of the grassy Ipiranga Brook in São Paulo, Dom Pedro I declared Brazil a free nation. Centuries later, visitors to the Terra do Brasil come to enjoy its awesome mix of natural offerings, captured in this doodle by Kevin Laughlin. Its main rainforest “is home to as many as 80,000 plant species,” according to the World Wide Fund for Nature. Brazil’s fauna is also impressive, with hundreds of unique mammals roaming its land, and thousands of fish species swimming through its waters. Happy independence day to beautiful, bountiful Brazil!

Earth Day 2021
https://youtu.be/hAxqygRdM4g
Thursday is Earth Day, when people around the world gather to celebrate the planet's environment and raise public awareness about pollution. This year's theme is Restore Our Earth and focuses on restoring the world's ecosystems through natural processes, emerging green technologies and innovative thinking.
To mark the occasion, Google has created a video Doodle that highlights how we can all have a hand in helping create a brighter future for the planet. Our environment sustains us, and as Google points out, we can return the favor -- one sapling at a time.
