Do you know if it has the same double meaning in the USA?
We'll just await the response......
I don't know what can be converted from "Roger"... Should I be offended if someone calls me a Roger? Or should it matter if someone suggests that I wash my Roger? Or perhaps that I go Roger myself?
You naughty naughty Englishmen... Now, I'm going to be self-conscious when someone tells me to "Roger that".
'Roger' has never been as popular a male name as Robert. At least here in the UK, if you had asked some people to select names from a list which could denote someone being perceived as more middle-upper class, then 'Roger' would be among them - I'd say also 'Ralph' and 'Robin'.
For some reason, it has become a slang term for a man's role in sexual intercourse.
The derivation of Roger is "someone who achieves fame with a spear", so the slang meaning follows from that.
Nice one but, in reality, the 'fame and spear' reference comes from the Germanic 'hrod' and ger'..and since that is not commonly known to most, unlikely to be the real answer.
Can't seem to find how it came about - it smacks of Cockney, but I can't think how it could be translated.
'Received Order Given, Expect Results' seems somewhat appropriate but, again, unlikely, unless the 'other' meaning did indeed emanate from the military....
I learn so much from you two! Nope, 'Roger' is not any sort of a pejorative phrase over here. In the States, it's more unfortunate to be named Dick.
As it can certainly be here, still....
Fortunately, my given name is 'Aloysius'... Well, it will be after I Google it and find out what unfortunate double entendres can be applied with that name.
Now I can't really believe that life in OzWorld has become so uneventful that you need to resort to that.
If you did, you could be s-o-r-r-y, as the initial mischief could quickly lose its novelty value...
Yah. And I'd get tired of having to explain that 'it's not pronounced a-LOY-see-uss'...
"You say that your name is Al Louishus? Really?!"
"Yes, exactly."
"Is 'Al' short for Alvin or Albert?"
[[Sighs, shakes his head) "It's short for 'Jerry'. Just call me that."
Oh...and, by the way, Jerry is a nickname used by the British for the Germans, particularly during WW1.....and also..... a chamber pot.....:)
Missed out on the chamber pot. Regarding Germans, I knew that from reading old issues of "Sergeant Fury and His Howling Commandos" back in the '60s. You guys still hold onto that one, eh?
If you mean the use of 'Jerry' to indicate German people, and particularly German troops, then the answer is no.
It is a nickname, but one which was formerly in use, and may have been in most use during WW1. It was also used in WW2, probably as a result of hearing it used by older relatives.
It's unlikely that anyone aged 70 or less will ever have used it much, if at all. I never have.
Ditto for use to indicate a chamber pot, as improved sanitation following WW2 led to them being less required..and surviving items now in most use as decorative pot plant holders. We have at least three in the sitting room....
I had a school friend whose middle name was the Scottish "Menzies". The correct pronunciation of that is "Mingiz".
Some of the Scottish accents are so thick, the accuracy of their pronunciation would leave me none the wiser.....
If only life came with subtitles...
If they vote "Yes" to independence, we'll understand loud and clear.
Why break with tradition now? We typically vote to inhibit the liberties of others, not realizing that we chain ourselves in the process.
There are times when it is right to take a leap into the unknown. In my opinion, this isn't one of them.
Scotland seems too small for a comfortable economic survival, should it leave the United Kingdom.
Scotland is considering leaving the UK? Not up on news in your quarter, I'm afraid.
Edit: Just read the other thread about the UKIP. Let me know when Scotland Yard deploys the storm troopers.
If the decision is made for Scotland to become independent of the UK, I guess there will need to be border controls.....
When I visited the USA in the 90s, there was a movement on Hawaii for independence. What happened to that?
Nothing. They stand to gain less than they would lose. There are also periodic episodes with people in Texas and Puerto Rico seeking independence. It's usually just a tiny, very vocal minority that wants it. Sort of like with the French Canadians who clamor from time to time for independence. Fortunately, nobody understands what they're saying because they're speaking French.
I'm trusting the same will happen next week with the Scots...
Just be leery of anybody who channels 'Braveheart' and wears blue face-paint and a kilt to the polls.
I'm sure there will be those who will wish to be seen to make a point. Apart from that, a simple 'Yes' or 'No' is required from the voters.....
"Braveheart" has a lot to answer for.
Facts are overrated when creating a good historical film. If you want accuracy, read the book. If you want blood, curse words, and boobies, it's best to watch the movie.
I agree, and believe that is often the truth when books are used as a basis for a film production.
I have sometimes wondered how often it works the other way around - and if there is a significant increase in sales of a book following the release of a successful film..or if, by that time in the process, the book then only serves simply as a sampler for the film.
Seeing the films "Fight Club" and "American Psycho" inspired me to read the books, and it was worth the effort.
Were they as good in their way, perhaps even better, or maybe worse, than the films?
I enjoyed them. The main reason I bought them was to fill in gaps in the films that weren't quite explained.
Yes, I imagine that would be very helpful. Maybe, if you had repeated viewings of the films, with the express intention of filling in the missing gaps, they might have been explained, but you had just missed them first time...but I wouldn't be at all surprised if you are correct.
It's generally true that publishing editors often wish to heavily prune the author's original draft, but that still becomes the original version. I'm not one to do it, but I gather there are quite a few people who log lapses in continuity [[and also historical inaccuracies) in films, due to heavy editing.
In both cases I needed to get a greater understanding of how much of the story was real and how much was only happening in the imagination of the heroes.
I won't get into mudslinging...[have you seen the price of mud these days]my campaine will get right to the point of things so just point em out and my hood[opps-err-ahem-hehe]humanitarians will get right to em.
As the subject was, last time I noted, about books used for film screenplays, what form will your 'campaine' be taking? I have people waiting by their phones....
West you're a man of the people, now they can pledge cash only...[no banker in his right mind would cash a check from me]..umm do to a small misunderstanding long ago that's still being sorted out by the criminal justice system...[opps-err-ahem-hehe]i mean the system against criminal injustice,so stay by the phones with that cash.
They don't have cash. They just want a good story. A couple of them are Aunts of mine. Hedda and Louella. They don't get out much these days [[only October 31st each year) but they type real fast.
