well wow! I wonder if they think this will replicate 20 Golden Greats all those years ago?

Lookin more like a cashin for a tour.
UK TV promotion for new DR greatest hits CD :D.

i would have preferred if it had more solo tracks and no supremes tracks .there seem to be missing a few solo hits such as ALL OF YOU/REACH OUT ILL BE THERE/THOUGHT IT TOOK TIME TO FALL IN LOVE /ONE LOVE IN MY LIFETIME/GETTIN READY FOR LOVE
Ross greatest hits packages ALWAYS sell well in the U.K. If projects like this bring in the bucks - or should I say brings in a quid for Universal to finance other projects like 'More Hits Expanded', then I'm all for it.
Will this be for sale in America? I hope so. Diana Ross's music is so much fun.
NICE list Redlabs. I'd love to have some of those on a compilation as well. I don't mind there being Supremes tracks, it was a huge part of her career, and if it keeps more casual fans happy, then great. But, it would be best if they only used those to fill out the album AFTER they included all her great hits, instead of leaving some out for the Supremes tracks.
Laurel: I'm just guessing here, but I'd assume that it won't be sold here in America directly. However, after these things come out, places like Amazon and other sites typically get them here through independent sellers.
i forgot MISSING YOU,SWEPT AWAY,DIRTY LOOKS
Ok, just downloaded it from iTunes UK since they included the booklet with purchase so here's a few initial thoughts and spoilers....
Essay is nice [[author not listed) but does have a few minor typos that don't bother me personally but seem to send the diehards into a tizzy on this board so be forewarned. The photos are nice but no images we've haven't seen in some form before [[The 76 Greatest Hits Cover, the #1's cover with heads included, the One Woman Best of Cover, etc.)
Haven't listened to it all the way through but all the RCA years stuff carries the 1993 copyright so I suspect they pulled the Forever Diana / One Woman Ultimate tapes and used those when compiling however the few cuts I've gotten through sound better than those collections did. Single edits abound here, most in stereo but a few mono mixes as well. Diana is listed as executive producer, however, Debbie Sandridge compiled and sequenced it. The coordinator for Ms. Ross was Rosanne Shelnutt. No other thank you's or detailed info provided just a blurb to go to the official Facebook page. I think the last paragraph sums up the package perfectly...
"As the title of her current world circling tour suggests, Diana Ross is More Today Than Yesterday. she provides the soundtrack to the lives and loves of millions. Even with the ever shifting mores of popular taste, it is impossible not to hear Diana Ross' influence in today's transatlantic charts. From Baby Love to When You Tell Me That You Love Me with Westlife, she has visited the UK Top 10 in every decade from the 60's to the 00s. The Greatest is just that, Diana Ross's most memorable moments all in one place."
The Shelnutt lady worked for Diana Ross; perhaps the other lady did too.
Typos drive me nuts in these packages; all it takes is some proof reading. But Andy once explained they go through them again and again and sometimes make new mistakes get made.
Mine shipped today!
Looks like they have also started an official Diana Ross channel on youtube.

Question for the big Diana Ross fans who bought or will buy this set: Why? I'm sure you have all of these songs, right? And if one or two or missing, wouldn't it make more sense to just download them individually?
For the price of a CD, I'll take em all put together for me with Big Bad Love and I've Got A Crush on You as part of it; those were always two of my favourite songs of hers.
Looks like the UK public feels there are enough Diana Hits albums around.
Based on first day sales the album is projected to enter the UK albums chart somewhere between 30 and 40 - nowadays most albums tend to peak in their first week although hopefully this might pick up some sales for Christmas.
I buy compilations of songs I already have because of the packaging, to support the artist/music, and because often times the songs will sound better/different because of the mastering and post-production involved. Plus I have several of them where the songs included are different in some way but not noted on the packaging. See this thread on The Supremes-PLAYLIST PLUS CD set for a great example of just that:http://soulfuldetroit.com/showthread...-Playlist-Plus
Good grief - I logged on to a movie website called 'rottentomatoes' today and the Diana ad is all over it.
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/
And 20 seconds ago i received spam email advertising it also. Don't you just love aggressive marketing?
Wonder why it's being pushed so much.
But this is the kind of set that will sell dribs and drabs for the next upteen years and then some.
Ejluther's reasons are the reasons I buy some of these as well; well put.
Officially entered the UK chart this week at #24 making it her highest charting album release there since Take Me Higher reached #10 in 1995. Not shabby considering Diana did no promo to support it. It even out peaked 2001's Love & Life which only hit #28 despite having a new single on it, Going Back.....
Too bad Diana Ross didn't record the song solo. The Rod Stewart parts are awful, he is just all wrong for standards-he has no sense of swing. Also, one can download the song from itunes without having to buy the entire album if you must have it in your collection.
Obviously other people like Rod Stewart's covers of the American songbook...because he's done 4 or 5 albums to date, all of which have done very well. I bought the 4th one because it had the Diana Ross and Chaka Khan duets on it. I've always loved Rod Stewart and his covers of these standards are cool.
Rod got a huge and very popular second career out of the standards sets he did.
He has had a career very much like Diana's.........huge, lengthy, very popular with the public and not acknowledged by the Grammys; much like Elvis Presley.
I think he got his first Grammy as a result of the Standards Sets. Of course, it might have something to do with the fact that they used to give very few Grammys in the 60's and 70's and in the 90's and 00's have been giving Grammys for issuing a new CD. The Grammy Awards finally got the drift and started to cut back the categories.

+5 Just take a look at the track listing and you will be blown away. In a remarkable recording career spanning more than a quarter century Diana Ross made some of the most memorable and enduring hits of her generation. Be it as the lead singer of Motown's sensational 1960's hitmakers The Supremes or later on in her career as a highly successful solo artist Diana Ross maintained a constant presence on the Billboard Hot 100 from the early 1960's until the mid 1980's. Over the years there have been many anthologies released by Diana but I am here to tell you that there is none better than Universal UK's phenomenal 2011 2 disc-44 track anthology simply entitled "Diana Ross: The Greatest". What a joy to experience once again the treasury of Diana Ross's finest recordings! This one is going to be considered a must for both collectors and for all fans of American popular music.
"Diana Ross: The Greatest" offers up 9 of Diana's biggest hits as lead singer of The Supremes. Enjoy once again classic #1 hits like "Come See About Me", "Stop! In The Name of Love", 1967" "The Happening", "You Can't Hurry Love" and the group's biggest single of all-time "Baby Love" which topped the Billboard Charts for 4 weeks way back in 1964. Also included is Diana Ross and The Supremes and The Temptations terrific rendition of "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" from 1968. So much talent on one recording! But while "Diana Ross: The Greatest" certainly pays homage to Diana's days with The Supremes the overwhelming majority of the tracks are devoted to her work as a solo artist. As you might expect all of her biggest hits are here including "Upside Down", "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", "Love Hangover" and her #1 hit from 1973 "Touch Me In The Morning". Diana sang an amazing variety of tunes and proved she could master them all. I was also very pleased to see that Universal UK chose to include several of Diana's Motown singles that were not necesarily among her biggest hits but were outstanding nonetheless. In this group I would include her very first single as a solo artist "Reach Out And Touch[[Somebody's Hand)", "Remember Me", "I'm Still Waiting" and the song that just might be my favorite Diana Ross solo recording of all-time "Last Time I Saw Him" from 1974. That is an amazing record!
In 1982, to the shock of just about everyone in the music world, Diana Ross would leave her mentor Berry Gordy Jr. and the comfy confines of Motown Records to sign a multi-year deal with RCA Records. Diana was looking to spread her musical wings and during her tenure at RCA she made some terrific records. "Diana Ross: The Greatest" features a number of these offerings most notably "Muscles" which was a Top Ten hit for her in 1982. Finally, "The Greatest" features duets with five of the biggest stars of the era including Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Rod Stewart and as you might well expect Lionel Richie. Lionel and Diana's recording of "Endless Love" topped the charts for 9 weeks back in the summer of 1981.
So there you have it. What's not to like? Each and every one of the songs in this collection is the original recording you would remember from the radio. All have been digitally remastered for your listening pleasure. As I mentioned earlier "Diana Ross: The Greatest" is being imported to this country from England. I find that record companies are very strange entities so there is no guarantee that this package will ever be released here in the U.S. So if you are the least bit interested I would snap up "Diana Ross: The Greatest" as quickly as you can. I believe it is worth every penny. Very highly recommended!
With 44 tracks this is great value for the price of a single CD. Most of the tracks are gems and it does include some more obscure ones.
Progress in the UK charts up to Decemeber 10 is 24-43-57-82-99 with total sales around 28k.
Unfortunately they pulled the plug on promotion after the first week. They probably decided that the first week sales [[around 9k) didn't justify the cost of TV advertising. With the album out of many of the store charts now it does not have a great profile and loses out on casual sales. I'm quite surprised it has remained in the top 100 this week.
Diana has such a low profile in the UK now that I'm sure most think she has retired!
Now if she would only do a tour here.............................................. ...
Diana Ross does hold a special place in most peoples musical memories in the UK. As stated, she has been in the UK charts, in one form or another, every year since the early sixties. You have to admire her for that. Wether with The Supremes, with The Supremes & The Temptations, with Marvin Gaye, With Lionel Ritchie, Al B Sure, Remix singles etc.The Brits do like Miss Ross. I do too. But do I really need another compilation? No. But, I already know, secretly, that somebody has already bought it for me for Christmas. he he. I would rather have More Hits By The Supremes, but you cant get that in the local stores. sigh..Just enjoy the wonderful music...I mean, when you think about it, Diana HAS made some wonderful classic songs over the years. It's had plenty of prime retail space on the display walls at the HMV's in London and was only priced 7.99 much lower than most the front line single disc new releases so Universal has put some effort into it and made it more of an impulse purchase. Of course, across the aisle was the 2 disc Love & Life best of in their 2 for 10 pounds promotion so that may be undercutting its sales and chart potential a bit.
Next time you go to HMV, if you truly love Diana Ross, please move the Love and Life CDs to another part of the store such as in Kidz bop section so you can help out The Greatest and people won't get confused and buy Love and Life and get it back it up the charts.
I bought it cos it was less than a tenner at Asda!
It's great that old artists competing in a field dominated by teenagers and early twenty sometimes, can still sell some CDs even if most of it has been released 70 times before already.
The picture is awesome, one of her best photo shoot ever. Too bad it wasn't on any record except "Pops we love you".
And the idea of mixing the decades works surprisingly well: the sequence "Where Did Our Love Go"/"Not Over You Yet"/"Take Me Higher"/"You Keep Me Hangin' On" is flawless. Why not? After all, she's the same singer.
BTW, I never saw the picture page 9. Where does it come from?
Hey, does anyone knows why my copy of "The Greatest" omits the track "Ease On Down The Road"?
Check it out here! http://silkelectrics.blogspot.com.es...-greatest.html
