I remember hearing "Rappers Delight" back in 1980. Yikes, that long ago?
The first hip hop act to produce a record.
And the lady doing this song in "The Wedding Singer"........LOL

Rita Coolidge [R&B, pop, rock, country, jazz and folk singer and songwriter; '[Your Love Has Lifted Me] Higher And Higher'; 'We're All Alone'] -
I saw Rita Coolidge & then husband Kris Kristofferson in concert when I was in school.
My girlfriend loved them & wanted to go so she took me. It was not my cup of tea. But Rita did a Bond song “All Time High” from Octopussy. It was said she thought that doing a Bond song would be good for record sales. But, as I recall this song wasn’t that popular. Am I wrong?
No, not wrong, Moe.
Rita Coolidge seems to have had spasmodic success with record sales.
Of her 16-17 Top 100 US hits, 'All Time High' was the fifth best of her chart positions, - her last Hot 100 entry, and one of her signature songs. But stalling at # 36 was not exactly a decisive smash, especially for a Bond theme. Had it not been so, it may well have placed much lower.
The film 'Octopussy' is positioned mid-list of the Bond films, when assessed for global revenue. A strong song should have charted higher.
So, as a Bond theme, 'All Time High' was an interesting release for Rita Coolidge, but one which did not seem to fulfil its maximum potential.
Fair enough - thanks!

Quote for the Day:
"On 'Sullivan', you sang live.
Not only that, you sang with a 40-piece band.
So you had instruments that weren't even on the original record!
So this was when the rubber hit the road - when you had to really learn how to perform.
And it was for 10 or 20 million people. So that was a challenge."

Gladys Knight's "License to Kill" got as high as #6 in the UK.
How did it do in the US?
It didn't even make the Hot 100.
For a Bond theme, and sung by an artist like Gladys Knight, how bad is that....
As you probably know, Gladys includes it in her set list when she is here in the UK...but now I wonder if it is always included for her US shows.....
It's quite interesting to note how many of the Bond themes were not big sellers, at least at the time of release.....in the US, some just don't figure at all....and then to wonder exactly why that would be....

Louis Nye, I believe, was [I think] part of the old "Steve Allen Show." And he might've played that "man on the street" comedy routine.
Kate Smith had an interesting "sports career." People were not paying attention to "The Star Spangled Banner" at Philadelphia Flyer Hockey Games, [due to tensions about the Vietnam War] so they used her rendition of "God Bless America" instead. Then Smith showed up in person to sing it, & they won. She continued to show up & sing. The Flyers thought her singing was a good luck charm because when she sang the Flyers record was 36-3-1. I think this particular year it lead to a Stanley Cup.
