Was this just something to fill up the background? Or just having fun?
Probably just to fill up the background as part of the ad-libs near the end of the record. It must have been a brief experiment, someone thinking it would be cute to pair these two on the same mic [[Diana and Stevie having known each other probably longer than anyone there). They worked so hard, though. Stevie makes it look easy. This was the same day Ross had hosted the entire televised American Music Awards event. It's a wonder her voice held up this well. It was work, work, and more work!
I realy love the "We Are The World" documentary featuring Smokey, Diana, Michael Jackson, Stevie, Ray Charles, Harry Belafonte and others doing their magic.
Truly a once-in-a-lifetime event.

When Diana belts out "let's start giving" around the 2:00 mark, it's like...ouch. She sounds best in her head voice, not chest. I love the girl always!
