Bobby Darin - Motown Years 1970 to 1973

In the late 60s and early 70s Motown signed several well established acts but then sort of took their eye off the ball resulting in frustration. True that a lot was happening at once with the move to LA and entering the film industry with "Lady Sings The Blues". Nevertheless there were some fantastic tracks from artists such as Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, Bobby Darin and to a lesser extent Sammy Davis Jr and Lesley Gore.

Thankfully, in the case of Bobby Darin, material that had long been vaulted has been made available over the years - mainly thanks to Joe Marchesse & co [[e.g. Andy Skurrow) who've made it possible for these tracks to see release on CD. The Real Gone CDs have wonderful liner notes as well and are well worth looking up. In particular, "Another Song On My Mind" includes a great resume of Darin's Motown career - much of this can still be seen on the Real Gone website -

My Motown Pre-Planned Cemetery Headstone is Set in Place

Attachment 21333Attachment 21334

I just wanted to share this with the group. I'm originally from Oklahoma and wish to be buried near my hometown where many relatives, including my paternal grandparents, are buried. What I didn't spend on the burial plot compared to California costs, I spent on the granite headstone. I was asked about my interests in order to design something meaningful to my life. Classic Motown music is what I consider to be my life's soundtrack. The company came up with this concept and I couldn't resist going for it. The original proposed size was larger and more costly. I had it slightly reduced to cut the overall cost. This was set in place a few weeks ago. The company sent these photos to me when the final invoice was submitted to me for payment.

The Rascals: It’s Wonderful: The Complete Atlantic Studio Recordings [7CD 5/31/2024]

Description from Now Sounds/Cherry Red UK:

The group’s entire Atlantic Records output 1965-1971.
• 152 carefully remastered tracks across seven compact discs.
• The first four albums presented in both stereo and mono, along with significant single edits and foreign language versions.
• For the first time on any Rascals re-issue, 14 previously unreleased tracks.
• 60-page booklet with detailed notes and rare illustrations from The Rascals Archives.
In the mid-1960s, the Rascals fused the best of rock and soul with memorable hits like ‘Good Lovin’’ and ‘I Ain’t Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore”, and they remain the most beloved of acts of that era. The electrifying quartet of Felix Cavaliere, Eddie Brigati, Gene Cornish and Dino Danelli defined the term blue-eyed soul. As the hits mounted up, the group expanded their musical horizons and revealed a powerful songcraft with introspective originals ‘Groovin’ and ‘How Can I Be Sure,’ future standards both. And their 1968 smashes ‘A Beautiful Morning’ and ‘People Got To Be Free’ remain among the greatest celebrations of peace and harmony ever cut to disc.

Although the Rascals are principally remembered for their singles, their albums were also studded with gems, and showcased not just their signature rock and R&B styles but also a progressive exploration of jazz, Eastern modes, psychedelia and other diverse styles. This set presents the full complement of their cornerstone Atlantic recordings, featuring the band’s seven LPs for the label —the first four in both mono and stereo variations—along with assorted non-LP singles, foreign language versions and, for the very first time on a Rascals reissue, 14 previously unreleased tracks.

‘It’s Wonderful’ is the definitive compendium of the group’s first five years 1965-1970, charting their growth from New York club band to international superstars. Compiled and suitably remastered by Alec Palao, this major refurbishment of their catalogue leaves no stone unturned. A nearly 10,000-word essay by Richie Unterberger provides an in-depth account of their career, and is supplanted by an extensive session history and copious illustrations from the Rascals Archives. All housed in a deluxe, handsomely appointed box art directed and designed by Steve Stanley.

The Marvin Gaye Collection booklet from original CD release

In 1990 saw the 4 CD release of the Marvin Gaye Collection was released, they had prepared an EXCELLENT 30 page booklet to accompany the set. The book was truly unique. It measured 11" x 11". It began with a Portrait Of An Artist by David Ritz that included 12 pages and 13 historical pictures including a great photo of Harvey and the Moonglows. Next were 3 pages Vol. 1 20 Top 20's; 3 pages Vol. 2 The Duets that included pictures of his 5 duet partners; 3 pages Vol. 3 Rare, Live, and Unreleased; 2 pages Vol. 4 The Balladeer. The final 3 pages showed pictures of all 45 of his vinyl albums data including the date it was released and every song included in the album.

This booklet was a George Solomon production.

Does anyone know of ANY OTHER booklets produced in this fashion? It is really a great collectors item and a good look at the legacy of Marvin Gaye.

It conclude with seven selections from the Unrelease LP, Vulnerable under license from CBS Special Products.

Truly a great publication in it's own right.
