Phil Spector - Part B - "Complete Philles LP Discography"

Welcome Wall-Of-Sound fans to Part B of the Phil Spector threads -- the "Complete Philles LP Discography"! It's taken longer than expected to prepare, but I've made it as complete as possible including Artist/LP titles listed by Philles catalog #, as well as tracklists with respective YouTube video soundclips. As a special treat, I've also included photos of each front and back LP cover as well as photos of Side A and Side B of each vinyl LP disc and label-copy from my own personal Philles LP collection. A big round of applause is in order for my good buddy Kenny (Kenneth) who has graciously offered (succumbed!) to post the Philles photos for me. I hope you'll all enjoy reliving the musical power and magnificence of Phil Spector's Philles Records.

Your questions, comments, and excellent musical knowledge motivates me and TNS to perform at the highest level we can and it has also helped us to become better, more informed human beings. We look forward to the continued dialouge.

We love you!

Question for Keith Hughes- The Lewis Sisters "My World Is Crumbling"

Years ago, a collector made me a tape of "rare Motown" and it included a version of The Lewis Sisters composition, "My World Is Crumbling". It was recorded in Detroit with The Funk Brothers, it was easily the best thing by The Lewis Sisters at Motown...and it was incomplete. Do you know if this song is in the vaults in its entirety? The music track alone is one of the most incredible performances I ever heard.

Phil Spector - Part D - "Philles' Subsidiary Labels"

In 1964, when Philles Records was feeling the backlash from the industry's resentment toward Phil Spector for playing by his own rules, and suffering from its still-top-notch releases floundering on the charts, Phil created a diversion for himself by setting up 4 new record labels under the Philles umbrella. Those labels were:

ANNETTE RECORDS (named after Phil's first wife, Annette Mearer);

PHIL SPECTOR RECORDS;

SHIRLEY RECORDS (named after Phil's sister); and

PHI-DAN RECORDS (named after, and co-owned with, Danny Davis -- Phil's A&R/Promotions man. Phil had very little to do with the music on this label.)

The cream-of-the-crop material was reserved for Philles, as always, but Phil was hoping to get a few hits on the new labels as a diversion from the stress he was experiencing at Philles. When all of the releases bombed on the new labels, Phil just wrote them off by admitting that he didn't really care about the music on those labels anyway. As can be heard, the production qualities on the new labels were a far cry from the masterpieces that we music lovers had come to expect from Phil's Philles productions, yet some fans have embraced these subsidiary labels and have paid big bucks for the exhorbitant prices that these ever-rare titles command.

"Everything Is Gonna Be Alright: 50 Years Of Westbound Soul And Funk" (10/25/2019)

Description
50 years ago Emanuel Lasky's timely A Letter From Vietnam appeared on a brand new light blue label with a royal blue label name: Westbound Records was born. In the ensuing years it set about proving that post-Motown Detroit could still be a home to successful music-making, scoring hits and developing careers with a series of acts including Funkadelic, Denise LaSalle, the Detroit Emeralds and the Ohio Players, as well as registering pop hits with Byron McGregor, and recording incredible jazz on its Eastbound label. Everything Is Gonna Be Alright looks at and celebrates the label's achievements in the world of soul, funk and gospel. Named after Bill Moss uplifting gospel anthem, the journey takes you from the label's very first single through the vocal group traditions of the Detroit Emeralds, the Magictones and Unique Blend, the funk of Funkadelic and the Ohio Players through to the Dennis Coffey and Mike Theodore-dominated disco era with CJ & Co and others. The compilation has a mixture of big hits and rarities from the Northern Soul classic by the Houston Outlaws to the much-sampled Pleasure Web. All are presented in their original seven-inch edits, many of which have never been reisssued.

Marvin & Tammi: What You Gave Me

Maybe there is no definitive answer, but I hope someone knows -- was that Tammi Terrell singing on the duet of "What You Gave Me"? Some sources are saying that it's Valerie Simpson. It surely sounds like Tammi to me.
