Missed Opportunities with the Marvelettes

I especially love Gladys' voice. and i like Wanda's a lot too, aside from when she gets too much into her head voice.

the Pink Album is just an amazing collection. really not a bad track on it. Here I Am is also very strong.

what do you think are some of the missed opportunities with the group?

I think Strange I Know was a little too "strange" to be a hit single. After Beechwood they should have issued Locking Up My Heart and NOT done a double sided single. Forever should have been saved as an A side to follow up Locking

And after Magician, they probably should have gone with Destination Anywhere. I like Here I Am - it's funky cool. But that smokey sound was getting a bit old

What others songs should have been released? or what other missteps?

Linda Ronstadt Confronts Mike Pompeo, Says He Should “Stop Enabling Donald Trump”

https://www.spin.com/2019/12/linda-ronstadt-confronts-mike-pompeo-stop-enabling-donald-trump-at-kennedy-honors-dinner/?fbclid=IwAR0w3KSG_jLQbIRlvUS52YstCROXR18YGB5i4BEd xMXMVZ9UKi5pIs1wyBI

Linda Ronstadt is set to receive one of this year’s Kennedy Center Honors, and in the hours before the ceremony Sunday night—which also airs on CBS on December 15— the vocalist had some strong words for Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Ronstadt confronted Pompeo at a State Department reception for Kennedy Center Honorees on Saturday night, asking when he plans to “stop enabling Donald Trump,” as Variety reports.
Pompeo started the night with a pre-dinner welcoming address, where in an attempted homage to Ronstadt, he quoted her 1975 cover of the Everly Brothers’ “When Will I Be Loved.” “As I travel the world, I wonder when I will be loved,” he told the crowd.
After the dinner, Ronstadt approached the microphone to make her optional address, where she chided Pompeo for his support for the current sitting president. “I’d like to say to Mr. Pompeo, who wonders when he’ll be loved, it’s when he stops enabling Donald Trump,” she said, returning to her seat. Attendees reportedly gasped, applauded, and eventually cheered for Ronstadt following the remark.
The Kennedy Center Honors take place Sunday night at the building of their namesake in Washington, D.C. Ronstadt is one of a number of renowned entertainers set to receive awards that night including Sally Field, Earth, Wind, and Fire, conductor Michael Wilson Thomas, and the creators of the long-running TV show Sesame Street. President Donald Trump will reportedly not be in attendance, and also skipped the last two iterations of the annual ceremony.

Podcast: One Record – The Untold Stories of Detroit Music

Hey ya'll,
'Ran across this a few days ago but haven't had a chance to listen yet...

"For every beloved Motown hit of the ’60s, there were literally hundreds of other Detroit records made by dynamic local artists who, for one reason or another, never made it. Now, much of this music is all-but-forgotten outside of a dedicated subculture of collectors and enthusiasts. The mission of the One Record Project is to capture the stories behind the more obscure Detroit music of the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s through oral history interviews with the artists, musicians, and songwriters who created it..."

GINO PARKS

THE LIST OF ARTISTS WITH BOTH FORTUNE RECORDS AND MOTOWN ON THEIR DISCOGRAPHIES IS EXCEPTIONALLY SHORT, AND OF THOSE THERE IS CERTAINLY NO VOCALIST AS ROUSING AND POWERFUL AS GINO PARKS. BUT DESPITE HIS NATURAL TALENT, HIS MUSIC CAREER WAS RELATIVELY BRIEF AND WITHOUT THE SUCCESS OR ACCOLADES IT DESERVED. ON THIS EPISODE, GINO TAKES US THROUGH HIS AUSPICIOUS BEGINNINGS WITH ANDRE WILLIAMS, HIS HAPPENSTANCE FIRST SESSION AT MOTOWN, AND THE LATE ’50S/EARLY ’60S NIGHTCLUB SCENE IN DETROIT.

BOBBIE SMITH

BEFORE THE MARVELETTES, THE VANDELLAS, AND THE SUPREMES, IT WAS BOBBIE SMITH & THE DREAM GIRLS WHO WERE ONSTAGE AND ON ROTATION IN DETROIT. THE GROUP’S LEAD VOICE AND STAR-POWER BELONGED TO A TEENAGER NAMED ELMA HOLMAN, SOON KNOWN FROM THE 20 GRAND TO THE APOLLO THEATRE AS BOBBIE SMITH. THE DREAM GIRLS CUT NINE SINGLES BETWEEN 1959 AND 1962. BOBBIE DID TWO MORE ON HER OWN—MOST NOTABLY 1964’S MAGNIFICENT “MISS STRONGHEARTED”. THEN SHE LEFT THE BUSINESS AND NEVER RETURNED. ON THIS EPISODE, THE SPIRITED SINGER GRACES US WITH A RARE INTERVIEW WHEREIN SHE SPEAKS CANDIDLY ABOUT HER CAREER, HER FAMILY, AND HER COMPLICATED RELATIONSHIP WITH THE TREMENDOUS MUSIC SHE MADE ALL THOSE YEARS AGO.

Happy Birthday Dionne and Connie

Today (12th) two of our favorites, Dionne Warwick and Connie Francis, celebrate their birthdays. Best wishes to each.

Although you will occasionally see different numbers (a common occurrence in the celebrity world) most sources say this will be number 79 for Dionne and number 81 for Connie. The late Frank Sinatra also shared the same birthday and I was told he would be 104 if he were still with us.

Not too far from that milestone is popular game show host Bob Barker, who IS still with us and reportedly turns 96 today. Must be some good genes in those three families. Have a good day one and all!
