This is a rare 45 which T.C. from york has with other superb tracks from a dvd he played me. I have the above track listed as a uk Sue 45. As far as I am aware thats all it is, a listed item, as I have yet to see a copy, which myself plus a lot of mates etc have for over 30years or more looked out for but have yet to actually eye-ball. Appreciate all that Gerri Hall has cut/etc. mel |

Mel, offhand I can't remember if she made many solo records - I'll have to check - what I can tell you is that for years she was one of the lead singers for Huey Smith and the Clowns. The single's from, I'd guess. about '67 She was New Orleans-based but I'm sure you knew that anyway. Davie |

Mel: Atlantic Record subsidiary Atco also released a Gerri Hall single. I believe the title is I Cried A Tear. Gerri is 70 years old now. She still lives in New Orleans but doesnt engage in any musical activity. People try to lure her back on stage but she tells them no. Shes quite a personality, believe me. Gerri sings on many Huey Piano Smith and the Clowns records, especially Dont You Just Know It (featured in the Snatch soundtrack), Dont You Know Yockomo, Little Chickee Wah-Wah (credited to Huey and Jerry), Pop Eye and the singles Smith cut for Imperial Records in the early 60s. |

I have 3 or 4 more Gerri Hall singles, all on little independent labels. I can't remember what the titles or labels were. When I get back to my 45s in November, I'll check. The labels were pale yellow-green, red and black (in addition to Hot Line. They were based in The South and also in New York. |

Mel, yes - that's the same one - Huey Smith and the Clowns were one of Ace's biggest acts - the Gerri Hall single may have been a side project Here's what I have on her solo records Rex 1006 (09/59) I Love you / Toy Man Ace 646 ( 1962) I'm The One / Hello Mr. Dream Atco 6260 (04/63) I Cried A Tear / Mister Blues (I think the A-side might be a revival of the fifties' LaVern Baker hit) Hot Line 905 (67 ?) Who Can I Run To / I Lost The Key there's also a 1958 single on Verve 10123 "Schoolboy" / "Let's Make A Little Love" bit I'm not sure it's the same singer. Davie |

Gerri would be surprised that you guys are so interested in her. She's very humble about her solo recordings. If I ran into Gerri, I'll tell her she was a topic at the Soulful Detroit forum. "Don't You Know Yockomo" is among my favorite Huey Smith and the Clowns tracks featuring Gerri. She's really having a time on that one. She was listening to one of those Ace tracks one day and said, "Yeah, that's me. Always the loudest one in the bunch." |

Emmett, nobody gets totally forgotten on this site - we may not know much about a lot of the singers from the fifties and sixties but somebody somewhere will be listening to a Gerri Hall record. Would you mind asking here if she did that Verve single ? If I can find it I've a book called "Walking To New Orleans" by John Broven which is an excellent history of the R&B scene in New Orleans in the fifties and sixties. Gerri was interviewed for that book and came across as a lot of fun. Davie |

Davie: If I see Gerri I'll be sure to ask her if she did a Verve single. It's nice that you guys appreciate her. Like a lot of folks from New Orleans, she's really a unique, natural talent. |

Davie: When I talk to Gerri I'll be sure to ask if she did a Verve single. The Atco single shows up on Ebay now and then. It's nice that you guys appreciate her. Like a lot of folks from New Orleans, she's really a unique, natural talent. |

I remember one of the small-label singles now. It was on "Reddi" Records. The label was pale green (with a slight yellowish tone-but not yellow-green). I think it was out of Philadelphia (but maybe it was from The South? |

This 45 has been discussed over on the RSF forum...there are two versions of this particular Hot Line 45...one regular version and another where her vocal is 'double-tracked', making it almost sound like a duet. Both examples of the disc are absolutely identical to look at in every way...label, cat & matrix numbers and all the dead wax markings! The only way to hear which version is within the grooves is to play it! There is supposedly a UK Sue test press in existence, but I've never seen it myself. |

Davie: Gerri said the Verve single "School Boy" is her record. She added, to my surprise, that jazz guitarist Barney Kessel was the A&R man for the session. It was recorded at Cosimo Matassa's studio in New Orleans' French Quarter and written by local keyboard whiz James Booker, if I'm remembering correctly. |
