Y'know reading this reminded me of something as good a vocalist as Freddie Gorman is his leads with The Originals were limited the majority think it is his 'booming' voice on the likes of 'DOWN TO LOVETOWN', GOD BLESS WHO EVER SENT YOU' etc but in fact the majority of the leads throughout the career of The Originals fell to Hank Dixon. Although all of The Originals (including Terrie Dixon Hank's daughter) had magical voices they truly are some of Motown's most under-rated vocalists of all time. TOP 3: DENNIS EDWARDS MARVIN GAYE HANK DIXON TOP 3 FEMALE: TAMMI TERRELL GLADYS KNIGHT BRENDA HOLLOWAY http://www.seanlivesey.com |

Vermettya who is also known as The Empress of Song has a very big and powerful voice. As a young girl she was operatically trained, but her real roots lay in gospel music. At the age of sixteen she began singing with the Clara Ward Singers and was the featured vocalist on several of their recordings. Prior to joining Sisters Love she was also a member of The Ikettes and The Raeletts. Miss Royster's voice is very unique and she possess a five octave ranger with a gutbucket vibrato. |

Here are my picks in no particular order: 1) Dennis Edwards 2) Levi Stubbs 3) Chuck Jackson 4) David Ruffin 5) Edwin Starr 6) Kim Weston 7) Thelma Houston 8) Blinky (deserved better material to sing!) 9) Yvonne Fair (her singing wasn't pretty but it was SOULFUL!) 10) Vermettya Royster 11) Tata Vega (right on Bro Love!) Alain, thank you for mentioning Vermettya Royster of Sisters Love! Those girls were bad! Why didn't they get hits out of great singles like 'Gimmie Your Love' (I'm sorry but their record puts Curtis Mayfield's and Barbara Mason's versions to shame!) 'I'm Learning To Trust My Man' and 'Mr Fix-It-Man'? I don't get it? Sisters Love had an album that was supposed to come out on MoWest (MW-109) in 1972 but it was cancelled at the last moment. Does anyone know if there are any rare promo copies around? Sorry to hijack your topic Jimmy! (Message edited by Rodmann on August 13, 2004) |

Alot of SD'ers fail to mention Kim Weston, a couple did. Rodmann and Soul Brother, I know you seen my name in some threads. I was never the one to say "I told you so". There's been a Detroit/Chicago/LA connection for the longest, that fact is just being known. Brother Love, Your talking about over 30 yrs some things come and go, or I have to think more on. In a thread titled "Rare Chicago Soul Acts" you asked me did I know about Vermettya. I do recall her singing with The late Clara Ward and the Clara Ward Singers. I was introduced to her by a friend that use to sing with The Thompson Community Choir and with the late Rev. Charles Brunson. Yes I remember Vermettya from the picture Wonder B posted. Like I say some things i can recall by looking at pics, singles & lp covers. Two decades ago she was a solo singing in gospel. Thank you all Don |

Also, sorry i meant to say you posted the pic of Vermettya. I know as a member either with The Natura'elles or Sisters Love I would meet the ladies with or without group personal change when they'd come to town or sometimes have a gig. I never got to meet Merry Clayton. Sisters Love have done some gigs here at The Burning Spear and High Chaperal. Don |

Rodmann, I fully agree with your assesment. Of all the three versions of Give Me Your Love, the Sisters Love version is buy far superior in all aspects, Vocals, bassline. It's one of the ultimate groove. In my opinion there's only one thing better than the original 7" and that's the Danny Krivit 8 min long version. Drop this on a packed dancefloor and watch all the girls go crazy when the horn introduction starts!!! This track is now a classic in France and in the U.K. even though it took 30 years for people to realize. Funny how some records become more relevant the second time around. The funny thing about Give Me Your Love is that it started out as the B-side to (I Could Never Make) A Better Man Than You. That goes to show record companies don't always know what their doing. In the case of Sisters Love they really dropped the ball, how could they not see the talent they had on their hands. |

Thanks for the info about Miss Vermettya Royster, Brother Love and Don. I knew that she had to have a background in gospel to have a voice like hers but I had no idea that she performed with legends like Clara Ward! It fascinates me how most of the great singers of The Soul Era had such extensive careers in Gospel before they went secular. I've been wanting to start a topic about this for some time. Alain, you're so right about Sisters Love's 'Gimmie Your Love' being the best version of all. I had heard Curtis Mayfield's and Barbara Mason's versions prior to SL's and I wondered what was supposed to be so great about this tune. Sisters Love turned this song out! Better arrangement, bassline and vocals than the other 2 versions. I love Barbara Mason to death but she couldn't compete with these girls in the vocal department. I'm sure that The Sisters made Curtis Mayfield proud! Brother Love, Motown really did drop the ball on this one. They had a hit but blew it! I've never heard '(I Could Never Make) A Better Man Than You' but it must be one hell of a song to have pushed 'Gimmie Your Love' to the B side! LOL. How is it Bro Love? Has anyone else heard Sisters Love's 'I'm Learning To Trust My Man'? At the tail end of the song the band breaks it down to the vamp and Vermettya hits this unbelievably loooooooooooooooong note. It's already a great song but that little bit at the end knocks me out every time I hear it! How did their records fail to make the charts? AMAZING! |

Someone had mentioned their album was not released, perhaps you can send your suggestion to Motown Select since they are asking for suggestions - www.boards.motown.com. I would love to hear Give Me Your Love. I liked the song by both Curtis Mayfield and Barbara Mason. |

Hi Ryon6. I was the one who mentioned the unreleased Sisters Love album on Mowest. That's a great idea about suggesting it to Motown Select. I'd like to but the link you gave is no good.
What's Up BigSexee. Linda Jones is one of my all-time favorite singers as well but she never recorded for the Motown label. Her main two record labels were Loma and Turbo. |

Tyrone, Vermettya was working with Sisters Love when The Ward Singers appeared on The Flip Wilson Show, she worked with both groups on and off in the early seventies. While singing with The Ward Singers she was on The Mike Douglas Show (14 times), The Ed Sullivan Show, Shindig, The Danny Thomas Show, The Joey Bishop Show, The Rosey Grier Show, The Mitiz Gaynor Show, The Jack Benny Show, Dial M For Music, The Jane Morgan Show and appeared in both the films It's Your Thing (with The Isley Bros.) and The Newport Jazz Festival 1962. Rodmann, I Could Never Make is another great track from these ladies as is all of their recordings. |

My mistake. This is Motown. In that case replace Russell Thompkins, Jr. with Levi Stubbs and Dionne Warwick with Syretta. |

Thanks Charisse, definitely SOULFUL. Had I Known his name I would have added him on my fave list too! I like the Truly For You LP from the Temptations. I wonder if he sings on " I'll keep my light in my window" one of my all time favorite Motown song or on the ballad Truly for you? |

Alain, I have that album. I know that Ron Tyson is singing on Truly For You, and more than likely Oli or Ali Woodson is on I'll keep A Light In My Window. There is also a version by Marvin Gaye & Diana Ross cd (extra bonus cut). The Tempts also have a cut on the "Motown Come Home" cd called Broken Pieces, which Ali sings on. Handsome |

I need to add Brenda Holloway to my list. I didn't know who sang Every Little Bit Hurts until I came to this board. I listened to that song just recently and started crying REAL tears. Had not heard her version since I was a child. Its rare for a singer to touch me that deeply. Only a few have made me cry. So for that reason alone she is at the top of my Motown list for females. |

Even though she made only one Motown album, she could, certainly THEN and NOW outsing ANY of the great Motown ladies. Before 1982, her vocal style was too "rough" for Motown, but after Diana Ross left the label, they offered her a contract. I'm speaking of Miss Bettye LaVette! http://www.bettyelavette.com The other great females were: Martha Reeves Gladys Knight Tammi Terrell Yvonne Fair Thelma Houston Of the Men: David Ruffin Dennis Edwards Levi Stubbs Marvin Gaye Stevie Wonder (Message edited by oliver on September 04, 2004) |

The Males I agree with some I don't know about IMHO's. You all did did left out J.J. Barnes too. As far as Female singers go Gladys Knight, Brenda Holloway, Kim Weston and Tammi Terrell. The most underrated that should have released more sides and eventually Motown could have release lp's on. However, from the singles I heard so far with what these women worked with coulda gone a long ways. I liked: Mable John (for her earlier Bluesy Motown delivery), Carolyn Crawford, Linda Griner, Barabra Randolph, Frances Nero, Liz Lands (given the right material), LaBrenda Ben...Debbie Dean & Hattie Littles? P.S. You have to understand I'm still exploring these fablous women's vocal skill. |
