These fellas from Baltimore had some hellified ballads back in the early 70s. Songs like I'll Erase Away Your Pain, Message To A Black Man, Friends By Day (Lovers By Night), I Just Can't Lose Your Love, She's Gone To Another, Try Me & Let Me Be That Special One, Alibis And Lies, We Will Always Be Together & Tweedly Dum Dum were on par with any of the classic ballads of that era. They even got into the Funk with World, Why Can't People Be Colors Too & the instrumental Souling With The Whatnauts.

Their classic Girls with The Moments, My Thing & their duet with Linda Jones were slices of danceable Soul heaven. In '81, they came up with Help Is On The Way, which inspired Fat Larry's Band's, Act Like You Know. Does anyone know what relationship the '81 Whatnauts had to their classic lineup of Billy Herndon (lead), Garnett Jones (tenor), Chunky Pickney (Baritone) & a gentleman identified only as Ray, who disappeared after their first LP?

Either way, The Whatnauts are an undeservedly overlooked group when 70s Soul is discussed. They were pretty damn good!

Juice,

Man, I tried to track them down around this time last year, to no avail. I just mentioned it to a guy from another local band, Ten Karat Gold, who's working or a CD and even though he's never left the local scene here (Bmore) he didn't know off hand, but offered to try again before he returns next week to work on his CD cover. (whew). The last lead that I had was that one of them was previously working for the feds (SSA) a few years ago...but it turned into a dead end for me.

On a kinda of related note, I saw a poster this morning announcing that Frankie and The Spindles will be playing at The Gentlemen's Ten next weekend.

Is this the same group that recorded the song, "Help Is On The Way" in the 80's?

That's what I've been wondering. In their 2 CD set, it is included. However, the sound was so radically different that I wonder what the personnel on HIOTW.
