Thanks Mel, but I only saw ONE 45 (Alvin Cash Toddlin' Town 104). Maybe the other ones you uploaded didn't make it? By the way, thanks for sending The Ex-ay-ve-ons' MP3 for me. They were a pretty good group, apparantly. I'm not sure why I never saw any of their records in my looking through millions, but somehow they avoided me. They have a pretty typical NY-NJ sound for that period, and pretty decent quality. |

Now I saw the Sandie Sheldon record come up BEFORE my post. But the first time I looked it WASN'T THERE!!!! Am I going BONKERS???? Anyway, Mel- How come you think Van McCoy's production of East Coaster Sandie Sheldon was a Chicago Record? I'd bet the farm it was recorded in NYC! All the names on it look East Coast- and it sounds like all his other NY recordings. Not to be a nitpicker, but.... |

It's been a long time since I seen Alvin Cash's Toddlin' Town single of "Funky Bag". The Major IV, ya know what can I say". I'm not sure if I had The Sharpees' "Tired of being Lonely?". I recall having Stormy's "I Won't Stop Crying" on the red Twinight label. |

Great scans Mel. By the way, Champion was distributed by VJ, but I wouldn't consider it a Chicago record. It was Ed Cobb's label, out of L.A. He worked with Lincoln Mayorga and L.A. musicians. He was a member of the production group in L.A. that worked with Jobete music, for Motown. Gloria Jones lived and worked in L.A. She was a very good friend of one of my partners at Airwave, and wrote some songs associated with us (though they never came out on an Airwave label. VJ picked up product from New York, L.A., S.F., The South, and a few other places, nationwide. They had an office in L.A. Fred Hughes recorded on The West Coast on VJ funded projects. The Rivingtons and Ballads may have been master purchases (or possibly VJ-funded projects?). I believe Champion was just a distribution deal, as was Simpson, Mar-Tay and others from The NY-NJ area |

I appreciate your looking for the Del-Val scan, Mel. I have a suggestion for a scan for this Chicago thread, though. In light of the passing of Tyrone Davis, I think it would be a great idea to post a scan of one of the Four Brothers 45s in his memory. Sound like a good idea? Best, Mark |

Mel, it will be interesting to see label scans of record owner Bob Lee's Lucee, Hawk, Big three and Sta-Set record scans. I'm not sure if I seen this other version of Curtis Mayfield & Eddie Thomas Windy C press before, I'm really not sure Mel? Limelight, Constellation, St. Lawrence/Satellite but the Cedric of Don Gardner's "Is This Really Love" given to me by the man himself. The same Don Gardner of "My Baby Loves To Boogaloo" fame, eh. |

Baby Huey & The Baby Sitters we're a band not a vocal group. Baby was a 350 pound guy really big looking maybe weighing more. Baby got his name from the tv cartoon character. Black audiences wasn't really aware of the ban, they we're more popular and had a big fan-base performing for white audiences. The band played alot of Rock 'n Roll than R&B maybe a combination of both. Baby Huey (who's real name escapes me) died in a southside hotel room, apparent of a heroin overdose, and was known as a heroin addict. R.I.P. BABY HUEY. Don |

Baby Huey was born 1944 as James Ramey and died in 1970. (BTW, he's not to be confused with Claude "Baby" Huey from Oakland who recorded for Galaxy, MIOB and possibly Bay-Tone.) |

Thank you BJL for the info on Baby's full name James (Ramsey). James was a really nice cool and humble of a fella, and there wasn't nothing he wouldn't do for somebody. What I couldn't understand was the community wouldn't support them and didn't want to have nothing to do with James & the fellas, but they'd always have a gig. I understand now what Sun Ra, Hendrix & Miles went (even alot of Miles' major black audience wasn't quick to jump on the bandwagon of him heading in a new direction). It maybe quick to say they we're a novelty band, they weren't, they had talent and could do originals and/or we're given good material. It must have hurt. I was sad when learning from a friend's cousin of his death. I had remember having this disc that's posted on this thread, I think there we're a couple more I think. I'm not quite sure? SD'ers if you know or have any other sides of Baby Huey & The Baby Sitters please post, I'd appreciate it. |

Here's a list of James Ramsey's vocal taken from the yahoo group about him: So far we know that James Ramey had recorded a total of 10 songs, which were, (1) " Just Being Careful" ,(2) " Beg Me " ,(3) " Messin' With The Kid " (4)" Monkey Man " (5) " Mighty Mighty pt1 " (6) " Mighty Mighty pt2" (7)" Listen To Me " (8)" Hard Times " (9) " A Change Is Gonna Come " (10) " Running " . " Mama Get Yourself Together " and " One Dragon Two Dragon " were his own compositions, but words were never set to these. More than likely, these being his own compositions , he would have intended these to be vocal tracks. These were most likely recorded after his death , but they could have been done as backing tracks which required his vocals later on. Anyway a lot of recorded music that has been finished has out takes / rejected takes . So out of these 10 tracks that he sung on, I wonder how many of the sessions had out takes etc, that have not been destroyed. I think he passed away in the middle of recording the Curtom album - hence the use of instrumental tracks to fill out the album. His version of "A Change Is Gonna Come" has a bunch of tape echo effects on it & a very trippy monologue. |

Morning Steve. The sound quality was awfully bad on "Just being careful and Beg me". I don't know how the engineer could muffle out the band and have the female vocalist higher up in the mix. The Baby Sitters we're a talented 9 piece band and they sound as if someone put one mike up so the band can be heard. It still sounds like a Curtis Mayfield Prod to me, even if his name wasn't credited. |

Kdubya, I had a vast record collection at one time and that got stolen box by box without me knowing. Anyway, I firmly remember owning "Just Being Careful", I may of had some others. Maybe the record your regarding was on The Windy C or Curtom label, I'm just saying it's been a long time and I wouldn't doubt that. |

I remember seeing Baby Huey talking on a pay phone at the old Rexall's in Kimbark Plaza in Hyde Park. This must have been about 1968 or 69. He told the person on the other end of the phone, "You're the fox and duh..you're tryin' to hurt me!" All jokes aside, I did see him on the phone that day. |

Mike - Funny! I guess Baby Huey would be a tough guy to miss though. Don - I've never heard "Just Being Careful". I don't think it's on the album that I have. Odd story: I first heard "Mighty Mighty" on Dick Biondi's show (104.3 WJMK) in Chicago a few years ago. Dick gets to play one song a night that's not on the standard "oldies playlist". I heard "Mighty Mighty" and knew I needed that record! |

Just curious. What connection did the Herb Johnson & Impacts on Brunswick have with Chicago? As far as I know it was a Philadelphia production, and probably went through Brunswick's NY office. I'm sure Carl Davis and the Chicago office had nothing to do with it. |

No problem Don, originally I'm from the southside...however during my formative years, I attended Delano grade school, spent my weekends at the Alex and Marlboro while on the Madison st strip, and later on taught/tutored brothers for their GED's at the old Urban progress center on Pulaski and Jackson. Later on whether it was the Club/High Chapperal or Keymans/Boss Martins any side was cool with me. And Mel..it was great seeing some of those old record labels from the Windy City..... |
