I think the thing that's killing the "oldie" business is oversatuation. I think that the mind can only deal with a song a certain amount of times before it goes from being "quaint" to annoying as hell ! Between the shorter radio playlists to the longer shelf life of CDS (remember when artists HAD to release new product yearly) we are getting burned out on songs a lot sooner. Factor in the EMPTY - V influence of video repeats and you are in NO mood to deal with a song ever again after it's 3 month "burn in"...

Well, in the past, the tune that won for "Best Original Song from a Movie" at the Academy Awards was something that was remembered and probably hummed while walking down the street by many people years after it's debut (something like a "The Way We Were", etc).....CAN YOU HUM THIS YEAR'S WINNER FOR "BEST ORIGINAL SONG FROM A MOVIE"?"

I am still waiting to see what the sheet music looks like for that "tune." This is one of the best examples of the decline of music culture in this country....The "creator" of this "tune" grew up in Detroit......

Medusa's input reads like she's not sure she should suggest that there is,indeed,some worthwhile music being released.....not necessarily "changing the world" music....but good and getting better with time......as some of the music did that we discuss on this Forum generally...a few faves of mine that have "legs":
Raphael Saadiq (his body of work to date TTT/Lucy Pearl/songs for others..."Fine" for Whitney was immense).
Jam&Lewis (since mid-80's....but I cannot argue with their abilities to stay "current" with Janet and produce a great last album,IMO)
India Arie - seems to have depth and admirable musicality...2 albums in and outlook is good..
R Kelly - Choc City's great,IMO.
Craig David - Voice/hooks/teenstuff...I think he'll improve on what has been a good/great musical start to his career.

Is it just me - or should the song by Michael Jackson "Rock My World", been a better hit? I love that song, and IMO - it is one of the best he's put out in a number of years. His 30 year TV special that aired in 2001, was one of my all time faves too, btw.

STUBASS - I just remembered that the MJ special is on my all time fave TV special list, along w/the Sammy Davis Jr. one.

I still cannot imagine any record out there right now that would hold up as a cherished "oldie" in the same manner as those we know and love and the basis of this forum.
The current consumers IMO, are too fickle and artists and songs seem to be forgotten about in the blink of an eye, so to speak.
Certain artists and songs may be the flavor right now but the mindset of most of the younger listening audience and the nature of the times in which we live seem to dictate a "here today, gone tomorrow" kind of attitude.

That is only my opinion, I could be wrong.

I'm relieved to see some input from you,Kev,that I want to believe strikes a note of optimism and I also hope Bobby isn't too jerked around by exchanges with L.I.S.
Some of u may realise I'm a UK resident and often playing catch-up on threads.....earlier today I listened to the Kelly Rowlands CD in the car.I have enjoyed this cd since purchasing a few months ago and,until I read someone enter her to the ranks of "worst singers" on another thread,I hadn't sought to crystallise thoughts on modern-days releases etc etc.
I have been of the opinion for years(that I've yet to adequately articulate) that modern-day performers(like Rowland) whose management/a&r people bring in a team of "hot" producers/writers probably don't have what Bobby,I think,is so p***ed off about - namely,an artistic credibility born out of being musicianly in themselves--they're all shine and little or no substance.
Well,I don't argue that point too much.
What I would say is that I/we can enjoy some exceptionally good,often melodic and well produced music as constructed by these "crack" writers/producers.....sometimes these people go on and have a solo career of reasonable quality (Babyface/Teddy Riley) but they don't have to do this to enjoy their work....and it's often cool to seek them out on cd's to hear them develop through another "front person" of the day.
It may not be as good as the 70's/early 80's but,as I've said a coupla times already on other threads,the times they are-a changed !!!
Bobby,this is no slight on yr valid and emotionally unassailble view(s) - just what I perceive to be a positive overview on what is still good to these ears
