Well Stu, that's a good question. In the San Francisco area that could be a number of places. There are a lot of docks in the infamous Pier 39 area whch is a large tourist attraction. Tour boats leave there to go to Alcatraz and points across the bay.
Anybody's guess I suppose.
![]() ![]() |
SHOULD BE SOME SORT OF LANDMARK!!!...HEY...SOMEONE SHOULD OPEN A "DOCK OF THE BAY" RESTAURANT AT THE PIER...OR SOMETHING COOL LIKE THAT!!!...MEL!!!...I'M HEADING OVER TO TOWER RECORDS TOMORROW TO PICK UP OTIS'S GREATEST HITS!!!...STU
![]() ![]() |
Stu:
Make sure you pick up THE VERY BEST OF OTIS REDDING or THE DEFINITIVE OTIS REDDING on Atlantic/Rhino. These CDs used the original mono single masters and the remastering is very good.

I LEFT MY HOME IN GEORGIA,HEADING FOR THE[FRISCO]BAY,DID ANYONE THINK THAT JUST MAYBE THE DOCK OF THE BAY MIGHT BE IN SAN FRANCISCO?
![]() ![]() |
ACTUALLY R&B...OTIS REDDING STAYED ON A HOUSEBOAT IN SAUSALITO ON THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY WHERE HE SPENT TWO WEEKS...REPORTEDLY LISTENING TO "THE BEATLES" "SGT. PEPPERS LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND" L.P. OVER AND OVER AGAIN...THEN PENNED "DOCK OF THE BAY"...RETURNED TO MEMPHIS AND RECORDED IT...AND AS FATE WOULD HAVE IT...DIED JUST THREE DAYS AFTER THAT HISTORIC RECORDING ON AN ILL FATED FLIGHT IN HIS BEECHCRAFT BONANZA...ALONG WITH THE BARKAYS!!!...STUBASS
![]() ![]() |
Yeah but the San Francisco Bay covers more territory than just San Fracisco.
![]() ![]() |
HEY RALPH!!!...I MAY HAVE TO DO A DOCUMENTARY..."SEEKING OTIS"...SEARCHING FOR THAT HOUSEBOAT IN SAUSALITO WHERE OTIS WROTE THAT SONG!!!...THINK PAUL JUSTMAN WOULD BE INTERSTED???...STU
![]() ![]() |
You might be on to something Stu. Where were certain song writers when the inspiration for a particular song hit them?
![]() ![]() |
IT WOULD AT LEAST MAKE A GOOD THREAD RALPH!!!...BUT THE OTIS THING IS A LOT MORE...CONSIDERING ALL THE CIRCUMSTANCES...HIS MONTEREY POP FESTIVAL APPEARANCE...HIS LAST...AND BIGGEST HIT...AND HIS MUSICAL LEGACY!!!...STU
![]() ![]() |
RALPH AND STU THOSE ARE BOTH GREAT IDEAS,I THINK THAT WE WOULD GET ALOT OF FEEDBACK ON THE OTIS REDDING IDEA,AS FOR INSPIRATION THREAD,DID YOU THINK THAT WHEN SMOKEY WROTE[I'LL TRY SOMETHING NEW]WHICH WAS WRITTEN ON THE BACK OF A POPCORN BOX WHILE HE WAS AT A BASEBALL GAME,THAT MAYBE THE HOME TEAM WAS LOSING?HOW ABOUT[IN MY ROOM]WHERE BRIAN WILSON HAD RETREATED TO HIS BEDROOM.

KENNY NOLAN HAS SAID THAT HE GOT THE INSPIRATION FOR THE FOUR SEASONS HIT..."SAD RAG DOLL"...WHEN HE WAS DRIVING THROUGH HOLLYWOOD ONE DAY...AND A YOUNG HOMELESS GIRL WITH PLASTIC BAGS APPROACHED HIS CAR!!!...STUBASS
![]() ![]() |
R&B
I didn't know that about "I'll Try Something New"! Such an odd start for such an elegant song.

Stubass:
Are you sure it was Kenny Nolan who wrote "Rag Doll" for the Four Seasons? I've read on two separate accounts (one of them the book "Behind The Hits" written by WCBS-FM's Bob Shannon) that Bob Gaudio came up with the idea for "Rag Doll" when he was driving home to NJ from Manhattan. He saw a young girl washing car windows along the street leading to the Lincoln Tunnel (en route to NJ) yet when she approached his car, the smallest amount of money Bob had was a ten dollar bill. So, Bob gave her the ten dollars and as he drove away, he saw her smile in his rear view window. When he got home, he wrote "Rag Doll", which became the group's fourth number one hit.

KEVGO!!!...RIGHT STORY...WRONG WRITER!!!...YOU ARE RIGHT!!!...SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THE COBWEBS BETWEEN MY EARS...I GOT THE KENNY NOLAN THING MIXED UP WITH BOB GAUDIO!!!...I THINK I MIXED UP A HOLLYWOOD HOMELESS STORY WITH THE "RAG DOLL" STORY...AND MY BRAIN JUST TOOK OFF!!!...THANKS FOR THE CORRECTION!!!...STU(WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR WINDOWS WASHED???)BASS

I think somebody told me, possibly at the Stax Museum, that the the idea for "Dock of the Bay" came from somebody else after he got back to Memphis and was telling them about his experience.
