I met Michael McDonald in Sweden in 1976. A couple of radio people had a nice boat trip together with the Doobie Brothers a sunny afternon in May. Michael and I soon found out we had a common interest. We both loved Motown. Michael told me he was a huge fan of Marvin Gaye. A blue eyed soul version of "Little Darling" can be heard on one of their 70's album.

I just want to tell you that Michael McDonald just has made a fantastic tribute to "our" number one record company....

I have just listened to the album... I am floored! If the Funks need a dedicated Motown singer for their show... call Michael. And start planning that European tour with a stop in Stockholm.

I hate to burst your bubble but Michael Bolton covered the Four Tops' "Reach Out (I'll Be There)" on his 1992 CD "Timeless: The Classics".

I saw the Michael McDonald CD in the record store the other day - I'm curious to hear how it sounds as well.

Did you know Mike McDonald has a Northern Soul biggie on RCA called God Knows. He even mentions it in interviews.A "Motown" album sounds worth alisten but do we need yet another version of Signed ,sealed delivered ??Does it prove an artist can funk it up a bit by choosing that track? The original is good, but for some reason covers of that song iritate me,and inclusion of that funks up any covers album. Please excuse spelling mistakes!

uhhhhh....I hate to do this to you again, but...

In 1987, Kenny G covered "What Does It Take (To Win Your Love)" on his multi-platinum hit album "Duotones" - the same record that gave us the - ahem! - smooth jazz - ahem! - classics "Songbird" and "Don't Make Me Wait For Love" (which I gotta admit singer Lenny Williams sounded great on the latter!).

In fact, it was the Junior Walker cover that initially kept Kenny G from getting dropped from his Arista contract because the tune was getting strong airplay on "The Wave"-type radio stations and R&B stations that aired "Quiet Storm"-type shows, helping the "Duotones" album gain solid sales.

"Songbird" sent the album's sales through the roof.

Kenny G question - Is "Songbird" the Bee Gees tune?

I think Michael McDonald is soulful enough to cover Motown...although I haven't heard the album yet.

Ahhhhh yes !! And the featured vocalist on Kenny G's cover was the multi-talented Ellis Hall...soon to be Tower Of Power vocalist and (much)later, the post-Buddy Miles voice of The California Raisins. He was recently signed to Ray Charles' reactivated Crossover Records....and I look forward to some killer stuff !!
