Fayette,
My three favorites are the Spinners Live, Lou Rawls live and Bob Marley's Babylon by Bus Live.
I had the Spinners live on 8 track, but of course had no player to play it on for years. Thank goodness I finally found it on CD a few years back! My Lou Rawls is on a cassette tape and I have yet to find it on CD. My Marley is a double vinyl. It's starting to snap, crackle and pop a bit though, so I will probably upgrade it to a cd sooner than later.

There was a 1970's Shirelles "Live" LP, which I've forgotten the title of, but, it was really good. Does anyone remember that one? I think they sang some Marvin Gaye songs. Wish I could find this one of CD.

Sunnyla, I have an RCA album by the Shirelles called THE SHIRELLES where they sing covers of BROTHER BROTHER and I believe, WHAT'S GOING ON, but it was released in the 70s.
The only live Shirelles album that I know of is SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION which was released by Scepter Records in 1967.

Thank you Reese I could not remember the name of the Shirelles Live LP, my brother had that when it was new & we liked it alot...I knew it was after their "hit" days. They were a great "In-person" act long after the hits when it was still the original group...even after Shirley left.

Generally live albums have been disappointing to me. Some people are not always caught at their best. These days a live album will be taken from a lot of performances to come up with one good live lp. However, here are some of my favorites from the past:
Spinners Live (I agree with sdl one of the great live albums of all time)
Diana Ross and the Supremes Live at London's Talk of the Town
Nat King Cole in Las Vegas (this was released a couple of years ago and is a show done for the other performers in Vegas at the time).
Dionne Warwick-Hot Live and Otherwise (she is at her very best here)
Pointer Sisterslive album released when they were a foursome and done in San Francisco. For some reason I cannot remember the actual name. But it has one of the greates overtures ever done for a live recording.

I think The Shirelles LP I mentioned wasn't really "live" where they sang the Marvin Gaye coveres. The cover of the lp showed 3 of them in concert, though I think the actual record was a studio recording. Hmmm. What's this Spontanious Combustion? Sounds interesing. Where there 4 of them then. What did they sing?

Sylvester live in San Francisco (where else?) at the War Memorial Auditorium. Two Tons of Fans were backing vocalist. The record rocks!

I think one of the best live albums I have ever heard is Frampton Comes Alive..I have a special place in my heart for the Supremes at the Copa though but I know its not one of the best live recordings. My next choice is Otis Redding Live in Europe.
Hindsight you are right Sylvester was awesome live.

I can see it now.....
.....J. Giles "Full House" is probably the best live LP I own. Play ANY studio recording of theirs and compare it with their live show, and the difference is remarkable.

Hindsight: wow, there's a Sylvester live album??!! Wow, I gotta look for that one. As an artist, I always thought he had an amazing vocal range and a great band too. He would do the deep voice thing then go into a high pitched thing, amazing!! May his soul rest...

Ike and Tina Live at Carnegie Hall (What You Hear Is What You Get)
Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band
Live Bullet (Cobo Hall Sept.1975)
Chuck Berry-Live in London. 1972

The Temptations live at the Upper Deck at the Roostertail from 1967. The Tempts were blowin'! The band, under the direction of Cornelius Grant, were cold! What a concert! The line-up: Eddie Kendricks, David Ruffin, Paul Williams, Otis Williams, and Melvin Franklin were without peer.

Sunnyla,
the Shirelles' live SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION album came out in 1967. It was recorded at (I think) Columbia University in NY. Its a bit raw compared to their studio recordings, but it does capture the effect they had on their audiences. Some of the songs featured are TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT, BOYS,and MAMA SAID. They also do covers of WHAT'D I SAY and I GOT YOU. Two songs on the album, LAST MINUTE MIRACLE and NO DOUBT ABOUT IT are studio recordings with dubbed applause.
