I did a "youthful"version of Black Pearl by the Family Connection in '74. the lead singer was 13!!

I liked it but it was not a million seller.

Main Ingredient had the bigger hit with their version.

Agreed with JSmith regarding Ruffin's version of "I Want You Back" - it could've been a hit as well.

If I may interject-- never knew RARE EARTH did a cover version of "I Heard It thru The Grapevine", know what album that was from?

I know that 'Creedence Clearwater Revival' did uh... well, just an awesome extended redition of that same number, "I...Thru The Grapevine" that seemingly played on, for nearly 12 minutes long!

Of course when I first had heard it, I had determined then... that this was one rather 'ass-kicker' of a tune which had earned alot of 'underground' airplay on the Detroit FM radio band, then, in 1970-'71... heavily played on "Rock & Roll" oriented stations like WABX, WRIF, WLLZ, and, on WKNR-FM.

"Heard It Thru The Grapevine" by 'CCR', certainly, one of my personal favorite 'classic' band "rockers" that came along from that era, as it was first heard played on the local Detroit FM radio, and that was way back in the early 1970s....

The band THE RUSTIX recorded a rock 'n' soul version of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" for their debut LP "Bedlam", which was released on Rare Earth Records in 1969.

The Rustix came from Rochester, NY (my hometown!)& their lead singer was Charles "Chuck" Brucato. Their manager, Ferdinand J. Smith III, was a Rochester DJ for WBBF radio and wrote the liner notes for "Bedlam" (he later managed Skylark of "Wildflower" fame). The band combined rock & pop with Motown-influenced arrangements and vocals (Chuck had a smokey baritone voice).

Their version of "Grapevine" was a combination of Marvin Gaye's arrangement with CCR-type rhythm section and a horn arrangement straight out of Blood Sweat & Tears. There was a "live" audience in the mix but that could've been overdubbed in the studio.

The Rustix cut two albums for Motown/Rare Earth - "Bedlam" and "Come On People" - before leaving the label in 1972.
