Philippe Wynne passed away on July 13, 1984, after suffering a heart attack during a show in Oakland. My first time seeing The Spinners was in the early Seventies in Tampa, Florida ... and what an impact that show had on me as a teenager.

Jon Edwards took the lead after Philippe went solo and did an amazing job. I haven't seen The Spinners since G.C. Cameron rejoined, but I've heard he's helping them still put on one of the best shows out there. The Spinners remain at the op of my all-time favorite list.

The Spinners were on of my favorite groups as well...and I NEVER missed them if they toured through D/FW. "Soul Walker" Wynne was a great vocalist & one helluva showman to boot & was the perfect counter to Bobby's voice. I saw them with John Edwards...but it just wasn't the same or even close. John is a good singer in his own right...and I liked his two Cotillion LP's...but he wasn't Spinners material in my book. His style was a tad too gospel tinged for what had been established as The Spinners style. IMHO, Art Wilson who sang "Pack Up Your Bags" on one of Harvey Mason's solo LP's would have been a much better "fit".

I LOOOOOVED Phillipe Wynne. I went to a show in New York and I will never forget him singing "I'm Coming Home" (one of my favorite songs, I even love the Johnny Mathis version on his Thom Bell produced album). Phillipe rocked the house and actually got happy during that song. What an incredible performer. I always wanted to hear him sing a duet with Aretha Franklin, now that would have been heaven!!

My goodness, I sometimes forget that the greats of the business are on this forum. How are you my friend? You have given me many wonderful moments throughout my life with the great songs you have written. I love that Johnny Mathis album and have worn my tape out. Columbia HAS to reissue that album, it is simply incredible. I have for many years sung "I'd Rather Be Here with You" from that album.

I wish you all the best this year and in any project you are connected with. It would be great if you had a couple of songs on the "proposed" Aretha/Gamble & Huff album that I have heard so much about.

I've recently talked to all of those Spinners guys and the latest news is that
- G.C.Cameron is out again. He's putting up the G.C.Cameron Review with four other guys
- Frank Washington has stepped in since January 14. Frank has been a member of the V.I.P.'s, the Futures, Wilbert Hart's Delphonics and in the second set (yes, there were THREE "Delfonics" at one point) of William Hart's Delfonics.
- John Edwards is still recovering from his August by-pass operation and a stroke.
(If you allow a small plug - I know many don't like them - but I'm gathering all this information for the third part of the Spinners story (the 70s) out in April, including interviews and/or profiles on Thom Bell, Buddy Allen Allen, Maurice King, Philippe Wynne + hopefully a couple of more still).

Oh yes, the Spinners are great. Too bad GC has left them. I just saw him with them on the disco special on tv.

Frank Washington is a GREAT choice. I always thought that he would work well with them(check out his lead on the Futures Part Time Party Time Man) and I relayed this to him. He is such a nice guy and great talent. Way to go Frank!!!!

everytime i hear anything about the spinners there song "truly yours" jumps into my head. it is one of the greatest tunes in motown history in my opinion.
