I thought this was an interesting topic, I listen to certain songs and you hear the singer get choked up...
Two that come to mind off the top of my head are not big soul hits, but I was wondering what songs you all can think of that you can hear the singer cry, get emotional, or choked up..
I Honestly Love You - Olivia Newton-John
She's Out Of My Life - Michael Jackson

My all time favorite crying song is "(It Looks Like) I'm Never Gonna Fall In Love Again" by Tom Jones. On record and especially live, Tom chokes up at the line "I broke down and cried." It's all part of the act, but very effective!
Does Tom Jones have any soul in him?

Out of the idiom, but there's an old Wayne Shorter album (I think it's Supernova) with the brazilian tune Dindi. The singer does a beautiful job, but you hear her crying at the very end.

Though it didn't quite come-off on the recorded version....The Spinners'"SoulWalker" Wynne gets quite emotional at the end of "Sadie"...and it appeared the he was actually crying each time I saw them perform this song. (John Edwards gives it a completely different interpretation....)

This is an oldie (1952) from New Orleans. The one and only record by The Sha-Weez on Aladdin. "No One To Love Me" is a sad doo-wop styled ballad. The ending is fantastic. The guy is crying his heart out! I have got the song on an Imperial album from the late 60's.

"Message From Maria" by Joe Simon: he gets to a point where he says "I can't sing no more cause I'm sad sad sad".

Mary Wilson cries at the end of "Come To Me, Mother".

Ray Charles could really give his full emotions and was really involved as it showed on some of his wailing which would reach up into a tearful finale.

Mel,It doesn't get any better then Ray Charles singing "Drowned in my own tears" I would say at that time in his life he was at his soulful best.No pun intended!!!

What makes mecry are all of these so caled "producers" who go from banging out a beat on an MPC 2000 in the back bedroom and going directly to a major deal worth six or seven figures and not knowing diddly squat about producing records or what a producer does.
At the end of the day the all in budget is spent on a Bentley, "Ice" , video games and sneakers.(dont forget the Cristal and the Ho's)

One of the most emotional (and exciting) records I've ever heard was/is Frankie Bearse (on Olimpic) singing "I Cry"! It makes you kinda wanna cry along with him big time!!!

.........owt by Linda Jones

.....I just love deep soul pleaders (gospel tinged wrist slashers) such as Lorraine Ellison's "Stay With Me Baby" or similar cuts from Erma Franklin, Shirley Brown or the above mentioned Linda Jones.
I seems to be the femme singers, pouring out their hearts on wax, that do it for me (more than male cuts).

Ruth Copeland cries near the end of "Music Box".
Best,
Mark
![]() ![]() |
Joe Cocker at the very end of "You Are So Beautiful" (though that's more a situation of not quite making the last high note than actually crying, I still find it very moving).

Vermettya Royster builds up the emotion quite high on "Are You Lonely?" by Sisters Love. Listening to their records, Ms. Royster could lay somethin' on ya. Phew..!
She put 110 percent into interpreting the lyrics to "Are You Lonely?" It sounds like she either lived them or did some heavy research for the part, like a great actress would do. On that record, you feel sad for the character she plays.

Dick Gamble,
an absolute gem that you mention by Ray Charles,'Drowned in my own Tears' and I agree with you regards the stuff he was doing at that time was about his best, even though I dig everything the guy does.
Have you read his autobiography?
an amazing man.

How about Loleatta Holloway's "Cry To Me" from her 1975 LP on Aware.

Did anyone mention Paul Williams of the Temptations, one of the most vulnerable, emotional singers I know. His version of "For ONce In My Life" live will break your heart and when his voice catches on some of the closing notes...

you guys know lenny williams wins this hands now.
(OH,OH,OH,OH,OH)

Listen to Dionne Warwick on the song All The Time on the Barry Manilow produced album, Dionne. She chokes up towards the end and it is very effecting. She can be the Ice Queen at times.

Fayette - I think you're right! Lenny Williams does win the crying contest!

Brenda Holloway is often referred to as the girl with a cry in her voice...I nominate "Sad Song"
...and it is in print that Detroit's own Martha Reeves WAS crying when she recorded "My Baby Loves Me" - why don't they make 'em like that anymore!
