Bobby Smith also sang leads from time to time. Philip Wynne replaced Cameron for most of the big hits with Thom Bell in the 70s. John Edwards replaced Wynne in the late 70s.

Arrggh. Mis-spelling! That's "Phillipe Wynne". I have been doing poorly lately. I cheated Babbitt out of a "t" and Allan Slutsky out of an "l" in posts from a couple of days ago, too.

Both Bobby Smith and Philippe Wynne (and Henry Fambrough occasionaly) shared the lead duties during their early and mid Atlantic years. Bobby would usually start the song off and Philippe would finish it. During their Motown years, I believe Bobby Smith and GC Cameron both shared the leads. According to the book "American Singing Groups", Harvey Fuqua sang the lead on "That's whats girls are made for", but I wonder about that, it sure sounds like Bobby Smith to me. Jonathan Edwards took over for Philippe around 1977/78. About two years ago, Jonathan had a stroke and CG Cameron, who left around 1970 came back and rejoined the group. During their Atlantic years, Thom Bell would usually have Carla Benson/Yvette Benson and Barbera Ingram sing background because he said male groups tend to go flat. Now we know any group at Motown, and especially the Spinners and the Originals, as many backing vocals that they did, would not go flat (at least not to my ears). So go figure!

The Spinners may have been underated but the public loves them, they work all the time from Private to Corporate to Vegas. I always spent a bit of time with Purvis Jackson the bass singer of the Spinners when they are home and they were only home for a few days then back on the road. The Only thing missing with the Spinners is a new CD which they may be considering around early 2003. I'd love to record Bobby and G.C. again "Together We Could Make Such Sweet Music" LOL

I am going by my memory, so hopefully I can remember. About two or three months ago in Steve Holsey's column in the Michigan Chronicle, it was reported that Jon Edwards was recovering from, I believe, a stroke. It also stated that he planned to rejoin the Spinners, and that the group would go on with 6 members, including G.C. Cameron. Perhaps other Detroiters remember this blurb from Holsey's column and can verify if I'm correct.

Dell In Philly when I was down there on vacation G.C. is with them now, they recently did a tv taping in pittsburgh for PBS, other groups on that show were the Temptations review, Tavares, Aretha Franklin and ali woodson apparently sang an amazing duet together

About the recent line-up of the Spinners: "G.C. joined them in the summer of 2000 first to replace temporarily the ailing John Edwards, but then he stayed and all six of them have been performing together - until recently. Billy: 'John had a quadruple by-pass. He's stable now...We were told it was something to prevent him from the clot, but when he went over there and they opened him up they found out that four of his arteries were cloted. It's gonna take awhile for him to recover, but he'll be alright'." (Soul Express, #3/2002).
The operation took place on August 12, 2002, John was recovering ok after that but has since then again gone through some problems.
