I've always wondered how Atlantic Records was able to get such a raw and soulful tune to take off on Pop radio? I can't think of another super soulful R&B tune before this (besides a few James Browns' hits) to really take off on the Pop charts as well as the Soul charts. You gotta give Aretha and Jerry Wexler their props. 1960's female Soul singing (and ALL 60's Soul for that matter) can be divided into two groups, Before Aretha Franklin's Atlantic recordings and After Aretha Franklin's Atlantic recordings! After Aretha recorded 'I Never Loved A Man' the cutesy Girl-Group type songs of the early 60's were suddenly out of fashion and women started getting real. Some female singers like Etta James, Betty LaVette and Tina Turner were always extremely soulful but Aretha made it acceptable for the Pop charts. Inez Foxx, Dee Dee Sharp, Irma Thomas and countless others all switched from Pop-Soul and vocally went back to their gospel roots. Even the men started getting a little more soulful on wax! 'I Never Loved A Man' wasn't merely a fantastic record but it was a Soul Music revolution! |

That LP was an EXPLOSION!!!! There none of that "Sweetie, Honey, Ooh Ooh Baby, I'll Do Whatever You Say, So Hit Me Cause It Felt Like A Kiss"!!! Not for Aretha!!! Honey started off with the real: "You're no good, heartbreaker. You're a liar and you're a Cheat"!! Man, wasn't nothing like that on the radio then. This girl was a revolution. I also loved the underrated Baby, Baby, Baby, that was a song!!! Now, don't forget that Otis was singing that Soul back in 1964. |

Oh yeah! I never said that Miss Franklin invented Soul. Otis was always a very soulful singer. And like I said in my post, James Brown, Etta James, Betty LaVette, Tina Turner and countless others were as well. I can't really think of very many of them besides James Brown and to a lesser degree Wilson Pickett and Percy Sledge (with 'It's A Man's Man's Man's World', 'I Feel Good', 'Papa's Got A Brand New Bag', 'Land Of 1000 Dances' and 'When A Man Loves A Woman') who were able to cross over into the Pop Top 10. Otis Redding had several fine recordings but he never had a Pop Top 10 hit until well after he passed in early 1968. Before Aretha Franklin, crossover success for women in R&B meant singing cutesy songs like 'Baby Love' and 'The Name Game'! LOL. James and Aretha will always be the King & Queen of Soul to me because they made undiluted Soul commercial to a Pop audience. |

Rodmann, you are talking the truth... That's why I feel sad today because I have learned that James will be the opening act for the Red Hot Chilli Peppers during their British tour from June 18th 'til 27th... How can such a legend, and the N°1 R'nB artist of all times (Billboard) open for the RHCP....? This is a disgrace... Does JB need the money that bad??? Wonder B

LMAO! Juice you're killing me! I'm not sure how I missed it the first time but "Sweetie, Honey, Ooh Ooh Baby, I'll Do Whatever You Say, So Hit Me Cause It Felt Like A Kiss!" is too damn funny but it's the truth! LOL. Wonder B, James Brown is OPENING UP for the Red Hot Chili Peppers! WTF? I can't get mad at the RHCP's because they have always shown love to George Clinton & P-Funk and now James Brown but Wonder you are right, THIS IS A DISGRACE! I'm not sure how this could happen? James just sold his music catalog a few years back for like 100 million dollars! What's next? Aretha Franklin opening up for Avril Lavigne? |

Juice, "Honey started off with the real: "You're no good, heartbreaker. You're a liar and you're a Cheat"!! Man" True True, but that line was followed by: And I don't know why I let you do these things to me. Don't forget the title of da song. |
