I don't know if anyone knows the 1999 book "I'll Take You There" by Matthew A Donahue. Hines Farm was a Ohio blues club in the early '50s to the mid-7os but didn't just have blues artists there. Several jazz and R&B performers played there as well as soul artists of SDF interest. There's a listing of appearances in the back, taken from the "Toledo Bronze Raven" newpaper - here are some highlights:

July 4/5 1964: Robert West presents the Copper Fantasy Revue, featuring The Falcons,Olivia Fairchild, Betty Lovett (sic),Charlie Athens, Stefan Ross, the Dancations, Roxanne, Dori Dean, Lee and Leon Dance Team
May 29/30/31 1965: Epic Motorcade Revue, Fabulous Sweethearts
June 25 1965: Lee Rogers
July 4/5 1965: Toby Lark, the Falcons, Lee Rogers, Mike Hollie and trio
August 13/14 1965: Johnnie Mae Matthews
plus a few more.

Buddy Lamp is also mentioned and there's a photo and a poster of him in the book. There's a poster for Allen Love and his revue which featured the Lovettes, Eddie Green and the Dale Morris Impact Trio if those names mean anything to anyone.

It's not the most well-written/researched book in the world, but might be of interest to some here.

BJL...where is/was Hines Farm? I was a student at Bowling Green Univ. (just south of Toledo) for a couple of years in the early 70s and I seem to remember hearing about the place. Just curious.

Gary,

Acoording to the posters, it was Swanton, Ohio. Directions were "Airport Highway - to Eber Road Left To Alt Route 20 Right 295 Left". Can you place it? Lee Moore was playing there in 1971...

I didn't mention that the Atomic Pirates (an African-American motorcycle club) used to meet there.

BJL,

I've heard of the book but have yet to come across
a copy - then again I doubt it was very widely distributed. I got the impression it would've made
a better website than trying to make a book out of it.

There was some discussion about it on the Yahoo
Southern Soul group some time ago - haven't had time to check but I seem to recall there was
some connection with a label called Esta that was active in the late fifties / early sixties.

Half of the names you mentioned are complete mysteries to me - maybe they were local acts who
never got to record.

BJL...okay, I kinda know where it is. From your directions, it was out near the Toledo Airport. Like I said, I never went there, but I do remember hearing about the place back in the day.

Atomic Pirates???

Re the Lovettes: the only Lovettes I'm familiar with were the ones that recorded for the New Jersey-based Carnival label.

I'm wondering if this is the same group? Every other act mentioned that sounds familiar was Detroit based.

Best,

Mark

Mark, there's an earlier group called The Lovettes
on Checker - they also recorded as the Gems,
the group that started Minnie Riperton's career.
