What is "It?"
Other than the nice dance beat (the bop), why was "it" recorded and released? Where was "it" on the charts?
IT BY RON & BILL
(GORDY/ROBINSON)
(Although I thought it was written by Ronnie White)
I WAS HOME LAST NIGHT TRYING TO READ A BOOK
THERE WAS A KNOCK ON MY DOOR SO I TOOK A LOOK.
BUT WHEN I REACHED THE DOOR
THERE WAS NO ONE THERE
NOT ON THE PORCH OR ANYWHERE
BUT IN THE DARK OF NIGHT, I HEARD A CRY
LIKE SOMEBODY WAS ABOUT TO DIE,
IT WENT OH OH OH OH, OH OH OH OH OH, UMUM,
IT WENT OH OH OH OH OH OH, OH OH OH,
I HEARD A NOISE SO I LOOKED AROUND
THERE IT WAS STANDING ON THE GROUND
FROM THE MOMENT THAT WE MET
I REALLY WANTED IT FOR MY PET
IT LOOKED AT ME WITH EYES SO TRUE
THEN I KNEW IT LOVED ME TO
IT SAID OH, OH, OH, OH, OH, OH, OH, UMUM
IT SAID OH, OH, OH, OH, OH, OH, OH
I LOVED IT SO MUCH I WANTED TO NAB IT
WITH THE FIRE IN ME I TRIED MY BEST TO GRAB IT
BUT THIS THING MOVED FASTER THAN A RABBIT.
I TRIED AND TRIED, I KNEW I HAD TO HAVE IT
IT RAN FROM ME, I TRIED TO CALL IT BACK
IT STARTED RUNNING ACROSS THE RAIL ROAD TRACKS
IT SLIPPED AND FELL, I HEARD IT CRY
I COVERED MY EYES AS THE TRAIN WENT BY
I WENT BACK HOME I WAS FEELING BAD
IT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE FIRST PET I EVER HAD
MY HEART WAS LOW, I DIDNT DO A THING
I HEARD THE TELEPHONE RING
I PICKED IT UP, TO MY EAR
I HEARD A VOICE SO SWEET AND CLEAR
IT SAID OH, OH, OH, OH, OH, OH, OH, UMUM
(ETC.)

It was an exterterestial little creature.

I guess IT could be whatever you picture IT
to be.
They recorded IT, I think Smokey has said,
as a duet, because IT didn't sound like a
Miracles record. I think that must be IT.

'Novelty' records were a big enough trend in the early 60's. I think it was an attempt by Motown to cash in on some of the action- much like 'Custer's Last Stand', 'Everyone Was There, 'Small, Sad Sam'.

It may not have been the Miracles, but that voice of Smokie's is clear and great. Thanks to all for your comments!

By the way Sis "IT" was an ET type alien long before ET ever appeared, Smokey has said that's what the "IT" was in that song.

"You'll Lose A Good Thing"!
Love slipped away.
Awoken from a wonderful dream.
Hold on to what you got, take care of it, care for it, love it, before it's too late.
Loss of love.
Regret.

It's just an Everly Brother's styled duet by Ronnie and Smokey. I think it's something along the lines of some sort of monster that maybe they don't even know, but they thought it might strike a chord with some teen fans.

And here they are:

Soul Sister - A different interp, good one.
RD - That would have been a great song to include on the "ET" soundtrack. (LOL)
Thanks Ritchie! I remember that song well. I was young, and It was scary after that phone call, after having been hit by a train. :o)

Nish - The song really struck a chord with me because it was great for dancing.

Sis, it is a good dancer, isn't it? I love what is possibly Beans Bowles' work on the flute in that song.
