Just wondering what is your favorite Aretha Franklin's heartwrenching Atlantic recordings. For me, there are quite a few but here's a short list.

1. "Good To Me As I Am To You" (Lady Soul)
2. "Call Me"
3. "I Wonder" (Aretha Arrives)
4. "My Song"
5. "Prove It"
6. "Dark End Of The Street"

"Ain't No Way"
"A Natural Woman"
"Lean On Me" - the Van McCoy tune later recorded by Melba Moore (not the Bill Withers classic)
"Tracks Of My Tears" (from her "Soul 69" album)
"Angel"

Kinda hard for any of her subsequent tunes to top the first one to propel her into the big time "I Never Loved A Man The Way That I Love You," which is about as heartwrenching and gutbucket as it gets.

Scratcher:
Dang! I knew I should've listed her first Atlantic biggie!

The entire "I Never Loved A Man" album is a classic from start to finish.

"Lean On Me" was included on the Aretha's Greatest Hits album Atlantic released in 1971. It was also the B-side of "Spanish Harlem".

Kev,
Thanks didn't realize that was same song. Got to find it and pull it out. BTW wasn't Melba's released first? Jean Carne does a cover of the song and it's amazing how much she and Melba sound so much alike on the long held notes of the song.

I had to limit myself to the 1960s. Otherwise, I'd be listing all day.:-) Especially since I just saw Aretha in concert last night, so I'm still on an Aretha-high.

My list:

1) IF EVER I WOULD ELAVE YOU

2) (NO,NO) I'M LOSING YOU

3) SWEET BITTER LOVE

4) JOHNNY

5) BABY, BABY, BABY

6) I WONDER

7) GOOD TO ME AS I AM TO YOU

8) HELLO SUNSHINE

9) I CAN'T SEE MYSELF LEAVING YOU

10) SO LONG

Actually, the first time I heard the "Lean On Me" in question, it was sang by the late Vivian Reed. Verrrr good. It was released about four or five years before Melba's version. Never heard 'Retha's treatment, but I'm sure she kills it. To date, Melba's rendition is my personal fave.

caliluv:
Melba recorded "Lean On Me" in 1976 for an album Van McCoy produced.

Aretha's version was cut in 1971.

Unless Melba recorded the tune for one of her early Mercury albums (released betweenn 1969-71), Aretha's version is the earliest.

Great minds, think alike, huh?

I can't believe that I left out AIN'T NO WAY. That's the one song that I always hope that Aretha sings when I attend one of her shows. A couple of months ago, I had the chance to hear Aretha perform it live, along with her special guest Cissy Houston. Talk about chills!

Aretha's subsequent tunes R BIG Time and right on time, due 2 the fact that NO one is soulful enough 2 B called "QUEEN of Soul"
They may have the soul STYLE, but aint nothing like the real thing~straight from the core...the passion of the SA node~ (LOL)!

I was listening to "Do Right Woman" on the Dead Presidents soundtrack (that's Aretha, isn't it?), and I swear, it felt like I was in church, but I had to realize that she was talking about a man :o)

...that same song is on the Movie "Cape Fear"
(oldie) starring Robert DeNiro...
When this woman (Aretha) sings, U can actually feel her soul.
