I play a vox wah, but I can not get that typical 70's Wah sound. Which other effects are used to get that sound. Maybe you can help me here Mr. Dennis Coffey?

Hey Ronald. I did add a little high end to my Wah Wah pedal in the seventies. The new ones seem to have that now. I used to combine my Wah Wah with an Echoplex and distortion pedal once in awhile. Which songs are you referring to?

Ronald,
What I used and still use is my 1977 Vox Cry Baby, but most of the sound depends on the "touch" and your wrist action combined with your "natural" rhythm.
You MUST have natural rhythm to accomplish this.
Try practicing with a 16th note hi hat pattern at about 115- 120 bpm and see what happens.

IF ALL ELSE FAILS YOU CAN TRY SAMPLING A COLICKY BABY THAT JUST LIKES TO KEEP EVERYBODY AWAKE AT 3:00 IN THE MORNING WITH THEIR WAH.WAH,WAH. HEEEE HAAAA HEEEE!!!!

Thanks for the tip Eli. I'm a rhythm player for many years now and I indeed used to practish the hi hat pattern for hours.
Dennis, what is en echoplex. Is that some kind of a reverrb or delay? Did you use real distortion or a fuzz. I thaught the fuzz sound was more used in those days. When I listen to songs like "Papa was a rolling stone" and other Whitfield productions I here some kind of a phase-shifter or some other funky sound. Can you tell me what they used for that?
Thanks, Ronald

Ron: If you are/were a "Rubber-fan" or "geepie"...think "Caspar on ECHOPLEX baba..." (Bootsy's "featured" effect.) I know that's bass vs: guitar...but you can distinctly hear the use of that effect.

Ron,
An Echoplex ia basically a tape loop that that is recorded and played back at a pre determined interval using 3 heads, in the same fashion as the "Sun Sound" or slapback echo which is controlled by a variable potentiometer which gives you your repeats.
You can hear it on In the rain by the Dramatics which Dennis played and on Hope that we can get together soon , HM and the Bluenotes with sharon Paige where I played a wah wah conected to an echoplex.

Ronald;
Are you playing a new or old vox pedal? It may be my imagination but it doesn't seem like the "sweep" is as wide now as on the older wah's. Also, I don't know what kind of guitar you're using, but sometimes sticking to the bridge pickup can make the 'wah' seem a little more pronounced.

Hey Ronald. I used a Vox Tone Bender as a fuzz tone. I think I also used a Small Stone Phase Shifter and other various effects. You can get close to an Echo Plex sound today by using a Boss Digital delay pedal.

Thanks guys, i will go to all your tips and see how far I will get. thanks Ronald

I have seen a web site dedicated to vintage pedals as well as they reproduce the old ones not just to spec, but using vintage components as well.It seems that small differences in Capacitors,Resitors and Pots over the years ,make a great difference to the overall sound.

Ronald,
Here's an echoplex. Not that I condone purchasing such a vintage and esoteric device over the web.

Regarding WahWah's there's lots of info on the web like Funky's link. Not all WahWah's are alike though. Fulltone makes great stomp boxes FWIW.
