Two of my favourite Sax players are
Chess records
Gene Barge
and of course Detroits
Mike Terry.

As I was delving through
some sounds I thought I would just put a little tribute together of some of the 45s that Mike Terry has featured on that are all rare/northern soul tracks that a few people may not of heard.

Every one a Gem(andthensome)!!!!

The Rotations-(put a dime on)D-9-Frantic(no.200).

The Soul Twins-Give the man a chance-Karen(no.1533).
Jack Montgomery-Dearly Beloved-Scepter(no.12152).
Holly Maxwell-Dont say you love me until you do-Star records(no.101).
The Appreciations-I cant hide it-Aware(no.1066)

And to finish
a 45 that I have had now since 1972ish
on a single sided Demo of the superb track by
Marjorie Black-One more Hurt-Sue(no.132).

I know it's all been said before
but this is just my little tribute
to one of the best(andthensome)

Nice to hear Gene Barge mentioned after all these years, Mel. I think, like Mike Terry, as well as being a mean saxman, he did some producing. Wasn't he responsible for Pigmeat Markham's version of 'Here Comes The Judge'?

Dave
yeah,
the great Gene Barge did produce etc.
One of the best Horn men in the buisness.

He did quite a few different
things in the music world.

Another totally superb
musician that you can hear so distinctly
in a lot of recordings.

Cheers Dave

Hey MEL,kool that you bring this to klass.
Yesterday while at our CODY HIGH SCHOOL reunion pic-nic after meeting old friends and band members again I took one of my ol band members MR.BASSMAN to my kar and put in a cd I transferd from tape a live session from ART LABOES club out of CALIFORNIA and the honkin man himself,JOE HOUSTON is heard kranking out "BLOW JOE BLOW,so to add to your fine thread, lets say the 3hree TENORS are :
CECIL JAMES McNEELY(BIG JAY McNEELY)
JOHN HENRY CANNON jr.(ACE CANNON
JOE HOUSTON.

In the beginning there was nothing but rock,
then somebody invented the wheel,
and things began to roll,
did you ever hear a tenor sax,
swingin like a rusty axe,
hope-in not to fall,
down in a hollow log,
well baby that is rock and roll.(THE COASTERS)

I really love Gene Ammons and Coleman Hawkins myself.

But one guy that seems to be forgotten is r&b sax great Sil Austin. My father had his "Plays Pretty for the People" LP and it was terrific. Just great, mellow stuff. What are the chances of Austin's stuff seeing print again? I bought the Sun label CD they did on him several years ago but it was terribly produced and they had changed the backing music on many of the tunes.

We all remember King Curtis and Junior Walker, but poor Sil seems to be fogotten.
