Can you all think of artists who big budgets were put behind them and for whatever reason they never hit big or hit paydirt. I can remember DJ Rogers he came out with a few songs and one I bought Love Brought Me back....its a good song. I saw him on Soul Train and his record company tooted him to the hilt and I remember seeing trade ads out on him and for some reason he never hit it back. His voice was mediocre at best but he made a few good cuts I dont know if anyone here remembers him but for some reason he never made it big but I remember him being promoted a lot..

Yo Handsome,
Ya got yourself a love-thang of Mica, doncha? ; -)
I hear ya tho. She is/was pretty damn good.
I recall the Black Rock band "Living Color" being mighty hyped in the late-80s. Yet they fizzled kinda quick.

Handsome - I'm feelin' a bit sheepish here....
I bought the debut releases of : David Peaston/Will Downing/Mica Paris and the Jones Girls' album with 'Nights Over Egypt' on it.....Am I a sucker for the Companies' hype????
I still bought more Mica and a Shirley Jones excellent solo album.....but never heard of David Peaston again and Will just pops up from time to time.....whatever.
I'm not quite sure of the extent of the backing the following received - and if anybody wants to enlighten me by saying 'not much was actually put on XYZ' - I'll stand corrected :
Jennifer Holliday/Ann Nesby/Cherrelle/Taja Sevelle/Ce Ce Peniston

I can only think of all the good artists and
records they made that did NOT receive the
promotion or airplay they should have.

Philly International spent a lot on Dexter Wansel in comparison to most of their other artists and didn't get much in return in the way of sales or establishing Wansel as a star.
Motown spent some money on G. C. Cameron and Jermaine Jackson but never got the return they expected.
D. J. Rogers is a good example but I don't know if they broke the bank for Mica Paris or not. She toured America when "My One Temptation Hit" then was seemingly forgotten.

jermaine did get a lot of coverage come to think about it but many folks forget that he did have some hits Do What you Do and that thing with Pia Zadora (i cant remember the name of it) and Lets Get Serious and Dynamite and Daddys Home...he is NOT a one hit wonder by any means. you are right though they didnt get the return they expected. GC Cameron has always been a mystery to me though I dont know if he didnt find the right song or what but he should have had hits..

More Jermaine,
I forgot about Let me Tickle your Fancy and Lets Be young Tonight..he didnt have a bad chart run at all..

Motown was expecting a much better return from Jermaine Jackson than they got. Taking into account the money they spent and what his recordings brought in he was a failure at Motown...and Arista too for that matter.

Stephanie: D.J.Rogers biggest (limited label assistance) hit was "Say You Love Me" on RCA....he then jumped to Columbia where he scored with "Love Brought Me Back". The label had big things in mind for him...bringing in Ashford & Simpson to produce a follow-up...but D.J.Rogers walked away from it all to become a minister...and he's never looked back.
Des: Ann Nesby (and Sounds of Blackness, etc.) got caught up in the sale of A&M Records and the absorption of Jam & Lewis' Perspective Records. I think she signed with a label who did not know how to promote her...causing her to leave and start her own label. The recent duet with Al Green is from her 1st project on that label.
As far as Cherrelle...no TABU Records,No Jam & Lewis,no Alexander O'Neal...no dice !! Little money to spend on a "maybe" who won't be able to put together the pieces that provided the previous hits.
