"Killer intro's" and the like,we've done....it occurred to me,while listening to Kool & The Gang's "Too Hot" that there are heap plenty songs that you'll remember for their mid-song 'solo's' as much as the song itself.....thinking caps on??
Here's one or two from me.....
Stevie - 'Lookin' for another pure love' - Jeff Beck guitar solo.
Stevie - 'Do I Do' - Dizzy Gillespie trumpet

1Wicked.....cannot believe you recalled Ronnie Foster. Man,it's been years since I played those albums of his from the early 80's (I hope my memory's on the mark, there). He had several superb cuts with an '80's ' Synth feel to them.....I love 'em,but they were instrumentals, right??? -- I have no problem with that, genuinely, but the Thread's about guys/gals like Ronnie who'd enter a cut and take it someplace else.......now if you open a Thread about Instrumentals??????

Des...I actually happened to be listening to "Do I Do" as I came upon this thread...good choice...and to add to it, had a real bass been used, wouldn't those couple of bass interludes have been great???
...or how about that cut on Anita Bakers "Compositions" ("Fairy Tales") when she stops singing and the band starts to do their thing, whoever that is on the piano took it to CHURCH :o)
The intro and the interludes on the Tops' "Keeper of the Castle" have kind of a funky little groove goin' on...
...and (last one for now) that jam session the Funks had going on in the middle of Barrett Strong's "Money" (speaking of taking it to church, whoever was playing that tambourine was playing that thing like they had JUST got out of morning service!) :o)

My man was mentioned Del Shannon!!! He had an incredible voice!!! This man did falsettos better than Frankie Valli although I cant compare the two. I saw him live a few years before he died in a small club and I have to tell you he put on a great show. I have always been troubled by the fact that although he had a few hits he should have had a MUCH longer career and the one song I didnt care for was Little Town Flirt. There is something Detroit about this man and I cant put my handle on it but he definitely had soul in him. I think Del Shannon is one of the unsung heroes of Rock and Roll and for Runaway alone he should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame I have all of his albums and never tire of listening to him,
Stephanie

Stu: I guess "Summer Madness" would/could be considered a jazz cut....if The Jazziacs had done it. (LOL)
Des: Though much of the "Love Satellite" album is instrumental..."Midnight Plane" IS a vocal track (sung by Ronnie). (Kinda like a Ronnie Laws track...)

Del Shannon: fantastic singer, great songwriter. From Coopersville, Michigan, but recorded in Detroit. Max Crook, who played the musitron (proto-synthesizer) on Del's records, contributed a lot to the Del Shannon sound. I am a huge Del Shannon fan. By the way, he IS in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame; he was inducted in 1999.

Mr. Eli, was it Sam "The Man" Taylor on the sax solo on "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" or was it Jimmy "One Note" Wright? I know that Jimmy Wright played on a lot of the Gee, Rama and early Roulette stuff.

Eli, that was actually Don Myrick on the solo on the live versions of "Reasons", Philip Bailey says, "Mr. Don Myrick on the alto horn. He plays so beautiful, don't you agree?".

On the song "Cancer" (from "Night and Day")...
Joe Jackson's piano playing isn't just a solo, it's a virtuoso display of Latin jazz pyrotechnics. Makes ya sweat & say, damn! halfway through, & still he doesn't stop. It's a stellar performance, almost, but not quite manic, & I'd suggest anyone who loves the piano as much I do, to peep it out.
