I have searched my everything about this question. I have dug deep in order to come up with the song that I'd choose and it's hard.
Recently though - I think I've come up with it. I didn't intentionally want to choose a song done up by one of my favorite groups or singers necessarily - but alas - I have.
I think my favorite song of all time is "We're A Winner", by The Impressions. Ironically one of my other faves of all time is - "I'm So Proud." Social and romantic statements indeed - and I loved them both.
Can anyone else sort of pinpoint what their fave song of all time is?

STUBASS - would the song/tune be by an artist w/the first name that starts w/an O & last end w/an R?" LOL! Or would it be one of the standards?
I started to pic a standard you know.

I don't think I can pick an all time favorite song. "We're A Winner" is a great choice. I think I would probably go with one of the songs by the Drifters, ie "This Magic Moment." But I'm not saying that's my all time favorite. I may think of something else later tonight that I liked better. :o)

G'day All,
LOL! The challenge here is to pick just one. I love too many songs to mention here - as I'm sure we all do.
Here are two others that I cherish. "Lift Every Voice And Sing" & "The Impossible Dream."
Matter-of-fact - if there was one song that I'd want to be playing as I'm passing from this world to the next - it would be...............
I read where Bob Hope was still humming up until his passing. Bless his heart. He was toned deaf - and more or less blind - but the story is that every time he took to the putting green - he would step up to the plate/hole humming one of his favorite tunes. This is at 98 - 99 and 100 years of age mind you. Wow!

Places and Spaces by Donald Byrd.
This song is so personal to me and it speaks volumes. It's an airy, soul searching, contemporary jazz tune that sums up my life with a smile and a tremendous sigh, "Places and spaces I've been."
Oh yes....
![]() ![]() |
Sis - "This Magic Moment" is one of my mom's faves.
My favorite song of all time would probably be the Miracles "Ooo Baby Baby."
![]() ![]() |
This is a good question but HARD too cuz I don't know if i actually have a favorite song of *all* time. I do have favorite songs though and that changes for me on almost a daily basis. I am definitely feelin' those who mentioned 'We're A Winner' & 'I'm So Proud'. Those two songs are so awesome!!! Good Picks!! Right now my *current* favorite songs are the ones that I have been listening to constantly on repeat lately and they are, in no particular order...Tyrone Davis, "Can I Change My Mind' Linda Jones "Hypnotized" Lou Rawls "Love is A Hurting Thing' Aretha Franklin 'Prove It & I Can't See Myself Leaving You' Marvin Gaye "Jan & Please Stay(Don't Go Away) and a few months ago I got a double disc cd from Jim Croce and I have been playing that non-stop!! So basically many of his songs are in my current favorite musical crop. Oh yeah, and I am playing the Honey Cone Soulful Sugar double disc cd like mad!!!! And I have to say that there also MUST be a Tammi Terrell song in my personal top favorite at all times, right now I really love "This Time Tomorrow" and...uh, what else? I feel like I'm missing a million more songs...i Know I didn't answer this question right(sorry!) but there are just soooo many great songs that I would probably have a heart attack if I had to list an *all-time* favorite. Ok...that's it for now.

Listening from Rock to Blues to soul, from the 60's to the 00's, from Bobby Darin to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, there's only one song giving me the chill and tears in my eyes, every time I hear it...and I mean EVERY time!
I have to stop everything I'm doing right now, to listen to it, to enjoy every single note and beat!
That's my alltime favorite:
"Ain't no mountain high enough" by Marvin and Tammy!
Nothing can replace it - whatever may come!
Darin

Hey SB!
I like a lot of songs, but my all time favorite song is "Summer Madness" by Kool & The Gang.
Everytime I hear that song, I forget about stress & just relax, and let the song absorb me! It's crazy trying to explain it, but that song does something to me!

My favorite all time record is by the Queen Of Soul Her Majesty Aretha Franklin. The song I love is "Prove It". The lyrics on this song are a killer.
Prove that it won't bother me
To become your use to be
Prove that I can just ignore
All the love we shared before
Prove it to my stubborn heart
Prove it now before we part
Prove it baby
Prove it baby
Prove the loneliness I find
Will be only in my mind
Prove that all these tears that fall
Aren't really tears at all
Prove that I don't want to die
Now that you say its goodbye
Prove it baby
Prove it baby
Before you walk out that door
Prove I won't love you no more
Prove that I'll forget your kiss
And in your arms I'll never miss
Now let me see you you prove it
Those lyrics are DYNO-MITE!
Vonnie

Vonnie, not to mention Aretha & The Sweets vocally pulling this song off too! I just played that song yesterday. Great choice!

Vonnie, you've got good taste! Prove It is one of the songs that I mentioned in my previous post as currently being in rotation on my cd player!! And DJDetroit I am totally feelin' you on 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough'..you can't no better than that!!!
![]() ![]() |
You all - I knew it would be hard. I thought about this topic weeks ago - but I wasn't sure which song I'd pick - and especially w/all these great songs being mentioned here on a daily basis.
Berry and Motown was famous for more than one artist covering the same song - were they not? LOL! I just heard Marvin singing "My Girl". yesterday. He did fine - but Mr. Ruffin owned that song.
I also loved the way Marvin sung - "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby", more than any other. I loved Smokey singing "You Really Got A Hold On Me", more than my homie Eddie's version. And what is up with that song, "He Who Picks A Rose?" I know I've seen about four or five different artists that covered it. If I got the name wrong - I'll correct it later.
Vonnie - I loved that song by Aretha - and the lyrics you posted made me want to boohoo. Aretha knows that she can sing them type songs doesn't she? The one I heard last week - that Sam wrote - "You're a no good - heartbreaker. You're a liar and a cheat." LOL! (I Ain't Never Loved A Man - The Way That I - I Love You) Now what woman would want to be with a man like that? LOL!
Two of my other all time faves - "A Change Is Gonna Come", and "Everything Must Change."
![]() ![]() |
'mountain' is one of my favourites also, not only the original, but the sitsom remake.indeed there is one particular moment in that song during the Key Change that provides me with what i think is one of the most emotional moments i have ever experienced with music, does it do the same for anyone else??
![]() ![]() |
Hey SB!
Motown always had different artists recording the same song, of course the arrangement & Key of the song would be different (depending on the singer). As for the title of the song, "He Who Picks a Rose" is correct. I know the Tempts & Edwin Starr have versions of this song.
Handsome
![]() ![]() |
soulboy do you mean when Tammi goes "My love is alive, way down in my heart, although we are miles a part..." and then Marvin comes in with his lyric? That's one of my favorite parts of that song It's like the instruments all come together in unison for this...climax...That song is *very* moving. And right before Tammi sings No Wind, no rain.." The drums are beating so hard and so fast it sounds like thunder or something..and the string section in the song..oh man!!
And SB don't get me talking about "A Change Is Gonna Come'... Sam Cooke...that can be another thread all in itself, lol
![]() ![]() |
just to say something else, I remember when I first saw Malcolm X when it came out...when 'A Change Is Gonna Come' came up on the screen as Malcolm was heading to the Audubon..i started crying so hard I think everyone in the theater heard me sobbing.
![]() ![]() |
ThommyGirls' earlier post saying it's too hard to pick one song is where I guess I stand on this, nevertheless, fine Thread.....after reading TG's comments on how emotional she became on hearing 'Change is gonna come' in 'Malcolm X',it made me review my current selection(s).....
I believe the song that hit me hardest BUT in an uplifting way (but could make me cry with joy)
was "I Am Singing" off Songs In The Key Of Life.
When Stevie raises the stakes and vocally soars when the lyric uses English,I will always remember the first few times I had to replace and replace and replace the needle on that opening Track ,side 3.
Just Stevie at his best.Soooooo wonderful on so many musical levels.I'm getting chills just thinking of the song.
Tonight, that's my favourite song.....and no matter what -- it'd be top 10 for sure.
![]() ![]() |
I don't know about song but favorite record:"I'll Be Around"-Spinners
![]() ![]() |
I love the part in "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" when Marvin and Tammi sing "Aw baby!" together. They are like the musical version of Bogart and Bacall, perfectly suited lovers.
![]() ![]() |
DS, yes it is really something what music can do. I think that music is the best artform *ever* created. It has always emotionally hit me in places where no other art form can. And Nish, I love that part of the song too. *That's* where the musical climax builds up!! Listening to the solo version that Tammi did with the Spinners backing her up and then to the legendary one where Marvin put his vocals on it for the duet, it puts me in awe and respect of Marvin's musical talents. He get's me everytime! Sometimes when I'm listening to a song I forget just *how* much a singer can add to a lyric and the emotion a song can convey by ad libbing. And also how legendary particular ad libs in a song can be!! Ever since I purchased the Marvin/Tammi 'Complete Duets' I now have renewed my love for that song becuz of those awesome Marvin adlibs. Not to mention also, cuz it's a really, really good song too! I know that adlibs had nothing to do with your post, but I just felt like saying this anyway, hehehehe!
![]() ![]() |
whooops, i just reread my post and realized that I didn't really explain what I was saying. I was talking about the adlibs that Marvin sang through out the song like ,"listen baby' and "don't worry baby" "just send for me" etc. Pure Magic!!
![]() ![]() |
@soulboy
Yeah you're absolutely right. That keychange gives the real urge and confirmation to the whole meaning of the song.

Been thinking about this question, mulling it over & over, because there are so damn many, & these things are always subject to change. But some songs just endure, weave magic, make you feel alive, no matter how many times your hear them.
SO, in that spirit, right now I'm going with the much unappreciated magnificently crafted
"Song For My Lady" by Jon Lucien.
Something very soul-nourishing, life-affirming, romantic, spine-tingling about this jam. I'm fairly sure not too many folks have even heard of it, but it's a pure sonic treat and a pleasure to all of the senses.
Goes a li'l sum'm like this:
"Come here child, and sit by me
Beneath this banyan tree
Let me rid you of your discontentedness
Unfold your mind so love can be
A part of you & me
Let us kiss the wind
And like the birds, be free...
Let yourself go, wonder
Feel a love so, tender
Darlin' let me free you
From misery
Heaven is my way to
Love you..."
Yeah, truly digs this cut.
Peace

There are just too many great songs by too many artists to pick just one. It depends on your mood! Thommygirl, I knew exactly what you meant. It sounds like such an integral part of the song when Marvin sings his ad libs, and hen listening to Tammi's solo, Marvin's penchant for creating his own magic within the song structure just strikes you.
More Today Than Yesterday is beautiful - aural optimism at its finest.

I'll have to agree with STUBASS and company. When "We're A Winner" came out in the mid sixties, Detroit was a powder keg waiting to be lit. I was only nine or ten, but I knew something had to give. I'd seen TV news stories about the freedom riders in Mississippi and Bull Connor down in Birmingham Alabama. I saw how the Detroit Police mistreated us.
When I sat down and really listened to Mr. Mayfield's Lyrics, the gravity of what was at steak gave me an appreciation for his message that till this very day will cause me to tear up.
I know what it meant to my elder family members. They were all preparing for hardship. We all thought there was going to be violence and death in our futures.
We would be the generation who would either gain our equality by any means necessary, or die trying. And in the midst of all of this, Curtis Mayfield was actually proclaiming out loud for the entire world to hear. "WE'RE A WINNER and don't let anybody say, boy you can't make it cause a feeble mind is in your way". YEAHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Since I have this opportunity I simply have to put in my alltime favorite song. It has been my number one song since I first heard it way back when and always will be. I have requested to my children and husband that it MUST be played at my funeral. My number one song of all time is "Comfortably Numb" by Pink Floyd. I can hear it a million times (and probably have) and it always brings out the goose bumps. I wish I knew why I became so obsessed and totally taken with the tune but that's how it is.
On another note, my favorite line in a song is the Whitney Houston, Didn't we almost have it all. The line is "The ride with you was worth the fall" - gets me every time, probably because there's a story behind that and a very sweet memory.
![]() ![]() |
My favorite song of all time is "You're All I Need To Get By" by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell
![]() ![]() |
Lauren
"Comfortably Numb" is a wonder-filled & meditative jam. I discovered this cut many years after it was first recorded. I dig it a lot, tho. It's like a piece of fine Art, where one can sit, study, meditate & muse on it for hours, & come away with so many different impressions. Good choice.
This weekend a new *old* song became my brand new favorite song, thus replacing my last favorite one. That song, drumroll please:
Minnie Riperton's "INSIDE MY LOVE"!
Man! Did Minnie blow Angelic on that one or what, people??? So intense is its sentiment ("Two Spirits, Greeting") -- so sexy, so intimate. And that l-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-n-g sustained note she holds & controls while singing the single word "LOVE"-- is about as brilliant & haunting as any instrumental solo, by most any musician or any instrument, past or present.
Yep. "Inside My Love" is JAM!
Peace.
Moanman, feelin duh jams...

I'm right there with ya Medusa...this is the Lay's potato chip of questions (nobody can have just one....)!!!
![]() ![]() |
LOL - ya'll. Now I know you all could pick the One that would stand out above all others. Let's just say that it was a matter of......... Or - by choosing your "Muhammad Ali", out of your all time faves - would/could you do it? And what about if it would save your life or win you a ten day for two cruise to anywheres?
I have approx. 25 all time fave songs - but I couldn't name them all right now. Out of those - I had to come up w/just one - and I am still pleased enough w/my decision. Yet - I understand it if one can't do it - because one might have many in one's estimation that are ranked equally. I respect it.
Anyway - another one of my all time faves - MJ's "Save The World." Absolutely love and appreciate that song. (Standard) LOL!
![]() ![]() |
Thanks for the input, Moanman.
When it comes to music I am obsessive compulsive so I also have the favorite song of the moment. Drives my husband nuts! But "Comfortably Numb" has that number one spot and will never be replaced. It's forever burned into my soul.
I don't think anyone really cares what my favorite song is so I'll just let it go unmentioned - it may change tomorrow anyway, or the day after. Growing up in the Detroit area and living there until 2001 I had all the music I could handle. I now live "Up North" and we are so painfully musically challenged up here. When I go down state I hear so many great tunes that just aren't played up here. Sad really.
