I have searched my everything about this question. I have dug deep in order to come up with the song that I'd choose and it's hard.

Recently though - I think I've come up with it. I didn't intentionally want to choose a song done up by one of my favorite groups or singers necessarily - but alas - I have.

I think my favorite song of all time is "We're A Winner", by The Impressions. Ironically one of my other faves of all time is - "I'm So Proud." Social and romantic statements indeed - and I loved them both.

Can anyone else sort of pinpoint what their fave song of all time is?

I don't think I can pick an all time favorite song. "We're A Winner" is a great choice. I think I would probably go with one of the songs by the Drifters, ie "This Magic Moment." But I'm not saying that's my all time favorite. I may think of something else later tonight that I liked better. :o)

You all - I knew it would be hard. I thought about this topic weeks ago - but I wasn't sure which song I'd pick - and especially w/all these great songs being mentioned here on a daily basis.

Berry and Motown was famous for more than one artist covering the same song - were they not? LOL! I just heard Marvin singing "My Girl". yesterday. He did fine - but Mr. Ruffin owned that song.

I also loved the way Marvin sung - "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby", more than any other. I loved Smokey singing "You Really Got A Hold On Me", more than my homie Eddie's version. And what is up with that song, "He Who Picks A Rose?" I know I've seen about four or five different artists that covered it. If I got the name wrong - I'll correct it later.

Vonnie - I loved that song by Aretha - and the lyrics you posted made me want to boohoo. Aretha knows that she can sing them type songs doesn't she? The one I heard last week - that Sam wrote - "You're a no good - heartbreaker. You're a liar and a cheat." LOL! (I Ain't Never Loved A Man - The Way That I - I Love You) Now what woman would want to be with a man like that? LOL!

Motown always had different artists recording the same song, of course the arrangement & Key of the song would be different (depending on the singer). As for the title of the song, "He Who Picks a Rose" is correct. I know the Tempts & Edwin Starr have versions of this song.

That's one of my favorite parts of that song It's like the instruments all come together in unison for this...climax...That song is *very* moving. And right before Tammi sings No Wind, no rain.." The drums are beating so hard and so fast it sounds like thunder or something..and the string section in the song..oh man!!

DS, yes it is really something what music can do. I think that music is the best artform *ever* created. It has always emotionally hit me in places where no other art form can. And Nish, I love that part of the song too. *That's* where the musical climax builds up!! Listening to the solo version that Tammi did with the Spinners backing her up and then to the legendary one where Marvin put his vocals on it for the duet, it puts me in awe and respect of Marvin's musical talents. He get's me everytime! Sometimes when I'm listening to a song I forget just *how* much a singer can add to a lyric and the emotion a song can convey by ad libbing. And also how legendary particular ad libs in a song can be!! Ever since I purchased the Marvin/Tammi 'Complete Duets' I now have renewed my love for that song becuz of those awesome Marvin adlibs. Not to mention also, cuz it's a really, really good song too! I know that adlibs had nothing to do with your post, but I just felt like saying this anyway,hehehehe!

I'll have to agree with STUBASS and company. When "We're A Winner" came out in the mid sixties, Detroit was a powder keg waiting to be lit. I was only nine or ten, but I knew something had to give. I'd seen TV news stories about the freedom riders in Mississippi and Bull Connor down in Birmingham Alabama. I saw how the Detroit Police mistreated us.

When I sat down and really listened to Mr. Mayfield's Lyrics, the gravity of what was at steak gave me an appreciation for his message that till this very day will cause me to tear up.

I know what it meant to my elder family members. They were all preparing for hardship. We all thought there was going to be violence and death in our futures.

We would be the generation who would either gain our equality by any means necessary, or die trying. And in the midst of all of this, Curtis Mayfield was actually proclaiming out loud for the entire world to hear. "WE'RE A WINNER and don't let anybody say, boy you can't make it cause a feeble mind is in your way". � YEAHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Since I have this opportunity I simply have to put in my alltime favorite song. It has been my number one song since I first heard it way back when and always will be. I have requested to my children and husband that it MUST be played at my funeral. My number one song of all time is "Comfortably Numb" by Pink Floyd. I can hear it a million times (and probably have) and it always brings out the goose bumps. I wish I knew why I became so obsessed and totally taken with the tune but that's how it is.
On another note, my favorite line in a song is the Whitney Houston, Didn't we almost have it all. The line is "The ride with you was worth the fall" - gets me every time, probably because there's a story behind that and a very sweet memory.

"Comfortably Numb" is a wonder-filled & meditative jam. I discovered this cut many years after it was first recorded. I dig it a lot, tho. It's like a piece of fine Art, where one can sit, study, meditate & muse on it for hours, & come away with so many different impressions. Good choice.

This weekend a new *old* song became my brand new favorite song, thus replacing my last favorite one. That song, drumroll please:

Minnie Riperton's "INSIDE MY LOVE"!

Man! Did Minnie blow Angelic on that one or what, people??? So intense is its sentiment ("Two Spirits, Greeting") -- so sexy, so intimate. And that l-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-n-g sustained note she holds & controls while singing the single word "LOVE"-- is about as brilliant & haunting as any instrumental solo, by most any musician or any instrument, past or present.

Yep. "Inside My Love" is JAM!

Or - by choosing your "Muhammad Ali", out of your all time faves - would/could you do it? And what about if it would save your life or win you a ten day for two cruise to anywheres?

I have approx. 25 all time fave songs - but I couldn't name them all right now. Out of those - I had to come up w/just one - and I am still pleased enough w/my decision. Yet - I understand it if one can't do it - because one might have many in one's estimation that are ranked equally. I respect it.

Anyway - another one of my all time faves - MJ's "Save The World." Absolutely love and appreciate that song. (Standard) LOL!

When it comes to music I am obsessive compulsive so I also have the favorite song of the moment. Drives my husband nuts! But "Comfortably Numb" has that number one spot and will never be replaced. It's forever burned into my soul.
I don't think anyone really cares what my favorite song is so I'll just let it go unmentioned - it may change tomorrow anyway, or the day after. Growing up in the Detroit area and living there until 2001 I had all the music I could handle. I now live "Up North" and we are so painfully musically challenged up here. When I go down state I hear so many great tunes that just aren't played up here. Sad really.
