Great news from what I've found on the July edition of Pro Sound News, page 25 regarding United sound Systems (www.prosoundnews.com) has re-opened after five years of closure. I will give you the text I've read, word-by-word. So here it is and enjoy.

UNITED SOUND REOPENS
Detroit---

After being closed down for five years, United Sound Systems (313.831.8952) has been reopened, freshly renovated and stocked with gear. According to chief engineer Kevin Powell, the space was purchased by a Detroit attorney, and an entire crew worked on the facility, installing Digidesign ProTools HD3 systems with 32 channels of Pro Control, Dynaudio Acoustics BM6A near-fields, and Mackie 824 monitors and subwoofers. Studios A and B boast HD3 systems, and studio A features also a Yamaha DM-2000 control surface. A third production will house a Pro Tools 002 system.

Now if the studio would have been high end by adding an AMEK 9098i, a SSL, an API, or a vintage Trident desk, which are my personal faves, plus approval from the award-winning recording engineers, and clean up the neighbourhood (kick out the thugs, mutherforkers; get some gay & lesbian couples to move in to increase the property values), it would be an asset to the pro-audio world. Screw Nashville, dammit!

What type of commissions are taking place there now?

Periodically I hear different statements. I never retain that information. I'm trying to remember what someone said to me as to who was recording there. Don't quote me, but I believe they said the studio was booked for a week for someone by the name of Caros Santana. THAT IS ONLY WHAT I HEARD. DON'T KNOW IF IT'S TRUE.

My wife and I stopped by there while we were in Detroit as part of our "Motown tour." We met Kevin Powell, engineer and Tommy G, chief executive officer? Tommy G gave us a mini tour and was just the nicest and most informative guy you'd ever want to meet. They still seemed to be in the process of getting all the equipment up and running. Sam

This a far cry from the old days when Ed Wolfrum was the king of the subject: United Sound Systems.
