I would have to rate James Browns' "Live At The Apollo" (1962) right up there. From all that I've read, that is an LP that changed the perception of live Soul recordings as not being marketable. Most accounts that I have read say that radio stations would play this LP in its' entirety, which has to be a Soul first. This LP charted Pop in June 1963, peaked at #2 & remained on tht Pop charts for over FOURTEEN months! It was ranked as the 32nd best POP Lp for 1963 (Billboard had discontinued the R&B chart earlier that year). That was absolutely amazing for a Soul artist.
I would also include Sgt Pepper by The Beatles. I think that after that LP, artists began thinking of making cohesive LPs that were somewhat thematic. Most LPs of that time consisted of a collection of previously issued 45s & filler. There was no filler on that LP & they also began experimenting with different sounds. I would also include The Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" as the beginning of experimental sounds.
