I feel this brilliant songwriter and great musical talent has never been given his due. What do others think? He seems to always be under the horizon so to speak. |

Maybe the big hit 'Stand My Me' became a millstone round Benny's neck. He recorded a massive amount at Atlantic but maybe only had success again with the 'Supernatural Thing' album. Check out the heartstopper on this album.'Drop My Heart Off At The Door'. A few Gems between the above mentioned: 'Ecstasy' 'Young Boy Blues' 'She's Gone Again'(which he recorded again in the 90's with an Hawaian feel 'Katherine' 'Tears Tears Tears' 'Two Lovers' 'Sandy'(one of my wife's favs...Springsteen's song) 'Til I Can't Take It Anymore' In 1976 he released an album which is hardly ever mentioned. 'I Had A Love' worth getting for the title track alone. His slows down the Main Ingredient's 'Everybody Plays The Fool' and then gets the blood racing with Sam Dee's 'Tower Of Strength' Into the 80's he suffered with some poor material but there are a few nuggets. A recent one 'Halfway To Paradise' on a Manhattan LP - 1987. Just a short post.. I could have gone on longer. Ben E. King.. a very underrated and GREAT VOICE' and as Juice said..maybe forgotten Barry |

"Young Boy Blues" is a jam. Hey, you didn't mention, "Don't Play That Song." He shoulda kept drifting with the Drifters. |

Yes! Imagine what a great, versatile group the Drifters would have been having Ben, Johnny Moore, Charles Thomas and Rudy Lewis alternating as lead singers! Each did a very good job with his own style in different types of songs. |

"I Who Have Nothing" "That's When It Hurts" "What Now My Love" "They Don't Give Medals To Yesterday's Heroes" all great! His new CD, "Live At The Bluenote" is pretty good, kind of jazzy. I wish he'd play out here. |

Ben E. King had some great solo songs (although I really don't care for 'Stand By Me'). Some of my favorites are 'Supernatural Thing', 'Star In The Ghetto' and 'Keepin It To Myself' (last two with AWB). He also recorded a couple of excellent duets with Dee Dee Sharp ('Whatcha Gonna Do About It' & 'We Got Thing Goin On') that I enjoy a lot! I'll keep my eyes peeled for some of the tunes that you guys have listed that I've never heard.

Hi! Ben's latest cd was released a few years ago, titled Shades Of Blue, on Half Note Records. It was straight jazz. The albums I have before that one were made for Ichiban and Manhattan Records. Best regards Heikki |

Its Amazing could have been recorded by Steve Mancha or J.J. Barnes and released on the Groovesville label, thats what it sounds like. But Don Davis produced this Detroit gem on Ben E. King and it was released on Atco.
definitely one of my Ben E. King favorites but it was never a hit. Anyone here know anything about the musicians on this great recording? Lars |

Supernatural Thing is GREAT!!! So were ALL his Drifters' lead records. And, although it didn't get much airplay or promotion behind it, Ben E. did a fantastic record with Dee Dee Sharp-- Whatcha Gonna Do About It b/w We Got A Thing Going On on Atco in '68. "Whatcha..." is the song written/recorded by Doris Troy on Atlantic earlier. |
