The only single I remember by this group was "Heaven Must Have Sent You"...released on Motown in '71/72. I had the pleasure of working with them in the early '90's with Ian Levine. Millie |

Millie, "Heaven ..." was released in '66, as was their fantastic LP on VIP,"Darling baby", which had, unfortunately, the worst cover of all the Motown LP's. Check it out ! |

Believe it or not, there is a bogus Elgins here in Philly. Their leader, even had the cohones to go on the NBC Philly morning show, live, to tell about his life at Motown and his "road stories". I live near the tv studio and I was tempted to go over there and spill the beans, but chose not to. BTW, he was recently released from prison on other offenses. His bogus cd even has the Motown "M" on it!! |

Is it accurate that Saundra Edwards(original lead) recorded as a solo for Levine and that Yvonne(her 70s replacement)recorded with the other "Elgins"?(Ive wondered y Motown didnt do more with them considering Saundra's great voice, the Elgins sensational vocals and their not shabby success with their intial releases. Motown hung in with the Supremes,Syreeta etc who didnt hit for a long time and the Elgins scored a moderate hit right away. Heaven Must Have Sent You is one of my 2 all time Motown fave songs). |

Yvonee Allen (Correc-Tone & Sonbert artist under her maiden name, Yvonne Vernee)took over from Saundra during the 70's, and has been with them ever since...including the two tours of the UK in the mid 70's and early 90's. |

Jimmy Mack, I agree with you. I've often wondered why Motown didn't hang in there with the Elgins as well? |

Nosey, in the book "The Motown Story", by Don Waller, there's a picture of the Elgins, with this comment : "Plain to see why Sandra Mallett, lead singer for the Elgins, was easily overlooked". And yes, she was not as pretty as the other Motown girls, like Martha,or Diana. But it's a shame, because their LP is excellent from beginning to end. Another Motown injustice ! |

And another thing! Eli, I feel ya! I was in a club where he was regaling folks with his stories and I wanted to "out" him right then and there! Also, my best buddy, Dennis and I got into a heated exchange about Lyin Virgil and I had to call my cousin in Detroit to confirm that no one ever heard of Virgil in Detroit! Besides, Virgil is too young (early 50s) to have been an orginal Elgin! |

I always thought that Don Waller comment was mean-spirited, out of place in a music history book and weird-Saundra looked fine--not all of the Marvelettes,Vandellas etc are stunning as are not most people on the planet.(Celine,Clay Aiken etc have done alright for themselves too!) |

Hello everyone. "Heaven Must Have Sent You" by THE ELGINS was re-issued in the U.K. in 1971 and reached #3 on the National Charts. This probably explains some of the confusion earlier in the thread abount when it was released, as I think it got re-promoted in the States on the back of its U.K. success. There is also a version of the tune by THE CONTINENTAL FOUR from 1972, presumably recorded in an attempt to take advantage of the interest in the song at the time. Of course, like many U.K. re-issue hits at the time, it never repeated its success across the Pond as the U.S. market had moved on to other things. Anyway, I can report that it is STILL a very popular record here. Last night I went for rest and recuperation in a bar near where I live that has a late license .. ( yes folks, I do enjoy the odd pint or two ). At the end of the night, after a couple of hours of solid Hip-Hop/Banghra/R&B/Rap etc. the D.J. finished off the evening by playing some old "party" favourites. And guess what was the last but one tune he played .. "Heaven Must Have Sent You" by THE ELGINS. It was great seeing all those twenty-somethings bouncing up and down to this wonderful tune, proving once again .. "Soul" is NOT dead, and great music lives for ever!! Roger |

Put Yourself In My Place is a great HDH song that I first heard as a Supremes B side (You Can't Hurry Love?), and was also on the Isleys' Motown album, but the Elgins version is by far the best. |

Worth mentioning that the initial presses of 'Put yourself in my place' (both WDs and stock copies!) were credited to The Downbeats, before being withdrawn and stuck out as by The Elgins. By the way, it's pronounced, 'Eljins'. |

Then I would ask, who DOES own the name. Someone connected with the original group, management, etc. likely had the name registered ( I hope) Only they have legal remedy available to them to stop him from using it. It's very sad to see these artists ( and their fans) continue to be exploited by cons and fakes. I'm sure you all familiar with the various Drifters, Contours etc that were around bakc a few years ago... |
