As we all know soul is many things to many people and a part of Soul is Funk. So with that stated what is the best Funk tune you know or like? Is it Nijia Walk by the Fatback Band or is it James Brown It got to be Funky or does George Clinton or Bootsy do it for you. Maybe Lynn Collins or the K-Gee's what funk dripping tune did it for you?` |

"Pluck" by George Duke. A largely instrumental jazz funk jam from his 1979 "Follow The Rainbow" LP. Bassist Byron Miller is laying down what I considor being the funkiest bassline ever. I have to mention the mid-late 70s work by Johnny Guitar Watson as well. - Ain't That A Bitch - Funk Beyond The Call Of Duty - A real Mother For Ya - Superman Lover great tunes from an ever so funky guitar-man! |

There are thousands worth a mention but I have to say that one that just popped in my mind and which has one of the loudest intros I know is the fabulously funky 'Catch A Groove' by a band called JUICE (Hey Juice I hope you have that one! LOL) ... it's on Greedy Records and the 12" version is sure to make your woofers explode!!! (BTW it's a 70's thing!) Cataclysmic funk... Another super funky tune (a 45) is 'Cramp Your Style' by ALL THE PEOPLE... If you want to check the funkiest tune you can think of (and then some!) just check the amazing funk site (with over 1000 samples of the funkiest songs ever issued on singles... http://www.funk45.com/ YOU WILL WISH I HAD NEVER GIVEN YOU THAT WEB ADDRESS! LOL (if you don't know it already! LOL) Wonder B If you mess with the 'fro, you gotta go! (Message edited by Wonder B on April 25, 2004) |

Hi, Vonnie, totally agree with you about the "funky" side of Teddy Pendergrass. I likes especially all the B side of the "Teddy" album (especially "Life Is A Circle"). Perhaps the most funky tune by Teddy is "Take Me In Your Arms Tonight" ( i think the female voice is by Stephanie Mills, my spanish edition of the "TP" album not have credits! IMHO, Teddy lost his good mellow soul and funky facets in his Elektra-Asylum albums (I give five Lp's of this period to a friend who loves especially this other Teddy "register", IMHO as "bland" baladist). If speaks about FUNK in his "energetic" aception, I think immediately in classic funky dance numbers as "Do It Any Way You Wanna" by People's Choice and "Shine On" (of the first Incognito album). Also in some jazz-funk numbers as "Rock Radio" by Gene Dunlap or "Funky Dream" by George Duke. Or soul-funk numbers as "For The Love Of Money" by O'Jays, "Turn On The Music" by Dramatics, electro-psychedelic funk as "Potential" by Jimmy Castor,... But, perhaps, as a synthesis of those things, and because my symphonic taste, my all-time funk favorite is: OPUS-DE-FUNK by People's Choice. Peace & Soul-Funk Food! |

Yes, Yes, Yes, Wonder B, I have that one from '77. It got a lot of play here on WBLS with Frankie Crocker. I've known about that site for a couple of years & my only complaint is that there's no way to find all of those records. I wish that they could obtain the rights to some of those more obscure records & sell them on CD. They even have college band songs. Did you hear the song by Jacques Dutronc on their site. It came out in 1967 & sounds like the guy is Rapping! Honestly, it's so hard to narrow it down to 100, much less one funky song. There's just too many to choose from. Vonnie, I'll see your Lyn Collins & raise you one Ohio Players |

Lars I would be a little less enthusiastic than GrahamD... The book is great but it lists and shows the art covers and references of what the site owner considers to be the funkiest albums and 45's... but is his own opinion only... I mean yes all the common, rare and very rare records are in there but there are also a lot of records with no connection with soul or funk (coming from rock or other genres) which are featured because they have one or a couple of tracks that are 'funky'... It's a bit confusing at times... But if you want to see a lot of rare albums this sure is interesting... (pricey though! LOL) Wonder B |

Amen to that Tony! I'll also toss in one Arlester Christian & his funky Let A Woman Be A Woman, Let A Man Be A Man. We knew him better as Dyke & The Blazers. Sly's Thank You Fallentin' Me is definitely one of the funkiest ever. Wonder, I have an mp3 of Mr Dutroncs' song. They have it listed as being released in 1967. I have no idea what he's singing, but I'm telling you that it sounds like he's rappin on that joint...IN 1967!!!! I think that the cut is called Le Responsible, I'll double check though. |

Put in 'Gigolette' from Ozone, with one of the funkiest bass lines I have ever heard... from the first intro notes everybody crashes on the dance floor everytime I play that one... I am lucky to have found the promo copy 12" which has a long instrumental version which I mix with the original 12" to make it one long nasty jam... that bass hook just drives me crazay! Stellar Fungk by Slave is another favourite... JB? I'd say Mother Popcorn, or I Can't Stand Myself and to top them all There Was A Time... Wonder B |

Alright, the groundwork is laid out ... all in the name of fun - let's argue!!! Or as The Mob said in 'Bop Gun' ... Defend Yourself. Wonder B - "Gigolette" the funkiest song EVER?!?! Defend Yo' Self, my Funkified Brotha - LOL BTW - Stellar Fungk was a nice one to mention A nice syncopated dance beat does NOT = The FUNK Sorry to those who want to believe they love the funk (little F), but THE FUNK by definition is undeniably offensive, a groove so nasty you got to open a window just to cut the stank. Anything less is simply something else Disco-Funk, Jazz-Funk, although there's some right stankified Jazz Funk. Disco-Funk is too clean, to smooth, too slick and polished, this even applies to much of the Mid-to-late 70's music created by my beloved P-Funk, it became The D-Funk. Peace

This may seem odd but the funkiest tune that I have heard in the last 20 years is the Janet Jackson, Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis cut "Rhythm Nation" on the same named album. That tune is a monster and every time I listen to it there is something I hadn't noticed about the instrumentation and arrangement. I checked and they won a Grammy for arrangement for that tune. Take another listen to this song. |

Manny!!! We Got The Funk is a most excellent choice. God, I loved that record when it came out in '79. I used to mix Love Injection by Trussel into that one. Brings back some good memories! I never heard Guilty or Wild Safari, but all of the rest are worthy choices! |

Hello again, funk brothers! Hi, friend Juice Free, "Wild Safari" by spanish group Barrabs is included in the Danny Krivit's double CD "Grass Roots" as also "We Got The Funky". The first was a authentic smash hit in Spain around 1972 and also internationally, have a good bass line and Hammond B 3 intro. The other, i remember in the first 80's when i start to work as barman in a disco, were played sometimes. About Mike Oldfield, this is my humble opinion, he got some other funk flavoured themes appart from "Guilty" (from his live 2 x Lp "Exposed"), also "Family Man" and "Five Miles Out". "Guilty" deserves to be consideres a funk masterpiece only for the bass! Some domestic funky "jam sessions" that recently i have played, (when the children let me start the turntable and i can hear vynils) includes: -"Disco Lights" - Dexter Wansel -"Tight Money" - Leon Huff -All the album "Bama Wama Boogie" by Cleveland Eaton -All the album "Don't Feel Good" by Ramsey Lewis (especially "Fishbite"!!!) -"Fortune Teller" - MFSB -All the album "Feets Don't Fail Me Now" by Herbie Hancock -"Just Around The Corner" by Herbie Hancock -"Positivity" and "Funky Dream" from the album "Dream On" by George Duke -"Tales Of Three Citys" by Salsoul Orchestra -"My Lady" (from the album "Street Life") by Crusaders -"Put Our Heads Together" by O'Jays Those all, appart from the other previously mentioned (i have CD and cassette players also incorporated in the turntable) and many others. Peace & Soul Food! |

A FUNK thread--where HAVE I been? Lets see.. 'You're Love Means Everything to Me' , 'Do Your Thing' & "Express Yourself' - WATTS 103rd St Band I Got the Feelin, Cold sweat, Sex Machine, Soul Power, Payback- JB You Can Make It If You Try, Sing A Simple Song, both versions of Thank You... - Sly Hit IT and Quit It, I Wanna Know..., You and Your Folks - Funkadelic Up For the Downstroke, Funkentelechy - Parliment Stretchin Out - Bootsy Band of Gypsies in general Great Moments in AM Radio Funk- Shes Not Just Another Woman-8th Day Breakdown and Come In out of the Rain-Parliament (Steve Mancha/Clyde Wilson-king of AM funk) Great Moments in Lite Funk- Funk 49 - James Gang Gimi A Little Break - Love (George Suranovich would have been a great drummer for Hendrix) Favorite funk moments- JB's shrieks and squeals on Cold Sweat, Payback and especially the live Bring It Up (funkier than a slaughterhouse floor) James Gadson's drums on the above 103rd St Band cuts Charles Wrights vocals on the "One of these Days,," lines in 'Your Love.." Eddie Hazel sing/speaking 'boobooboo' (ya gotta hear it) after Geroge Clinton says 'its called Funkadelic Music' on Mommy Whats a Funkadelic-funny as hell (special props to the Tera Shirma engineer saying 'we're rolling on 'one'-tapes in motion'-nice touch keeping it on there) and FAVORITE FUNK MOMENT- Funkadelic drummer Tiki finding his way back after getting lost during the organ solo on "Hit it And Quit It"- flat-out seat of the pants ingenuity-musical survival skills in action Oh, this was about Funkiest ONE Tune??? Yeah, right Steve K |

I was contemplating listing "Hit it and Quit It" when I saw the above comment about Tiki Fulwood's recovery after getting the beat turned around during the organ solo. That was impressive. Another interesting one is where the Ohio Players jury-rig a 3/4 measure each time they play the introductory passage at the beginning and coming out of the bridge on Skin Tight to make the Horn line sync up with the bass line. |

Sudi -- good call on the Players 'in and out of the bridge'. Another underrated Players cut is Ecstasy, which on casual listen just sounds like the same riff over and over for 2 1/2 minutes, but is much more subtle and quirky than that. The thing about Hit It.. is that G Clinton (as 'caller of the shots') didnt try to have the drum thing cleaned up or edited out. Props to him for leaving well enough alone. Also, on my above 'Funkiest moments" I left out the 'breakdown/comeback' towards the end of You Can make It if You Try by Sly. That drum/bass/gtr groove is NASTY |

Today at work, I listened to my custom CD of JB. James is simply Numero Uno, everyone else is a distant second. The groove was so great that it had my fellow worker who is 62 & just come back from a stroke, working double time. Aside from the songs I mentioned previously, I burned the following: Get On The Goodfoot The Payback Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved Give It Up Or Turnit Loose (Orig) Give It Up Or Turnit Loose (Sex Machine Live) Open Up The Door The Popcorn Mother Popcorn Blues & Pants If you don't move to this, you're dead!!! "Let Your Hair Down" by The Temptations. Sweet layered funk. Dennis never sounded so soulful and funky. Norman Whitfield really hooked up The Temptations on this wonderful funk laden song which clocks in under 3 minutes!!! Definitely an overlooked funk classic. Can I get an Amen from anybody? |

RICK JAMES the Funkster -- both on and off the stage -- is not even mentioned regarding "funk"? Has the Board been sabotaged by aliens (from outer space). Hello, come in funk! P.S. To Juicey, Vonnie and the lovely (I'm sure) Lady Mystique: Lyn Collins' song is not "Think". Oh, no, it's not! It is "Think About It". So, think about it. I know, they played it at The Stonewall. The record store would be giving Mystique the wrong music sheet for her upcoming show. "Think" is the title of a totally different song by Aretha! Allllrite! Amen go rite there. Did U ladies and gentleman Juice participate in the "Countdown to MOTOWN 45" survey yet? Think about it. I don't think so. C'mon, now.

"SUPER FREAK" is actually rather freaky and funky!! To some, the funkiest at that time. To some others, it still is. Yet the wild and funky Mr. RICK JAMES was not even once mentioned by any of U alleged funkers. I just can't believe it. Be real, neither can U. And I have to come in from my Girl Group arena to tell y'all who is funk? Why, y'all mentioned just about everyone except Kate Smith ("When The Moon Comes Over The Mountain"), the ETHEL MERMAN Disco Album and R.J. I mean, the wild man did the crime and served his time! Give him a break. Juice-Free is gonna have to be "Workin' Overtime" to philosophize out of this one. U want funk????? Try some of Rick's other big time funky stuff such as: * "Bustin' Out" * "Give It To Me Baby" * "Mary Jane" (which begot the funky Mary Jane Girls) * "Cold Blooded" * "You & I" U all mentioned so many other Motown artists including those "big" funksters: THE TEMPTS, THE TOPS and even LITTLE STEVIE WONDER plus MICHAEL JAX's non-Motown sis JANET! But no Funky JAMES? When U think of Motown funk, 99% of people would only think of Rick. Am I wrong? "Is The Funk I See Just A Mirage?" |

Stonewall you are ABSOLUTELY right... LOL I re-read the whole topic (pppheeewww) and no one even mentioned Tricky Rick James... Unbelievable... I guess some choices are so obvious that people overlook them in the end... I can only find that explanation, because Rick surely is in the FUNK category, no doubt... I would add to your list 'Ghetto LIfe' which guitar intro I like a lot... and 'Love Gun' just for the sake of funk... I would have posted some great pics of RJ if my brand new PC (running on XP) hadn't caught the SASSER worm... damn!!!! now I have to get back here with my old computer (but Sasser proof Windows 98 LOL) Wonder B If you mess with the 'fro, you gotta go!

Hi again Funk Brothers! Hey, Slyfan! This funky number by O'Jays is jointly with "I Want You Here With Me" the favorite of mine from the Lp "Identify Yourself" Are you casually from Canton, the hometown of The O'Jays? Another funky number by Joe Bataan is his cover of "Shaft" (more funk, IMHO, than the Isaac Hayes original!) Some other soul funk numbers i remeber now: -"Chocolate Chip" / Isaac Hayes -"Night People" / War -"If You Feel Like You Wanna Dance, Dance" / Dramatics -"Love Is Comin' At Ya" / Melba Moore -"Easy Money" / Dee Dee Sharp -"Jingo" / Cndido Camern Peace & Soul Food |

Damn, T-Ski I'm not quite through,I see that Wonder's got an LP by you...HIT IT!!!! I never knew that T-Ski had an LP! I ran Catch The Beat until it sounded like detergent was in the grooves.....HISSSSSSSSSS I used to run the beginning & repeat "T-Ski"......"A-now"....."Ski- Ski-SKi" DAMN!!! The things I used to do with that Grand Groove cut. Now how did we all forget about B-Fats & The Wop? How abot Change The Beat by Fab Five Freddy??? I need the 12" version of The Wop, mine was "borrowed" some years ago. I need the instr & voc. I also thought the The Mood & Love Me Tonight by Kashif, as well as Trust Me, I'm In Love & Sexy Girl by Lillo were funky. On the Disco tip, I thought that Come Down To Earth by Choice Four was funky. Damn Wonder, what don't you have bro???? Juice |

BRETHREN!!!! Come listen to my Talking Heads: You may find yourself living in a shotgun shack. And you may find yourself in another part of the world. And you may find yourself behind the wheel of an automobile. And you may find yourself in a beatiful house, with a beautiful wife. And you may ask yourself, how did I get here. Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down. Letting the days go by, water flowing underground. Into the blue again, after the money's gone. ONCE IN A LIFETIME, water flowing underground! SAME AS IT EVER WAS!!! |
