just scouting through ebay and came across 2 promo 45's by the Supremes...one being "you cant do that" and the other being "I want to hold your hand"...both look like the white label promo's that Motown U.S.A used but ive never heard of or seen these before...any info greatly appreciated.7043

Maybe they are truly promotional records made to promote the album A Bit of Liverpool. I've also seen white label promos from the UK that were obvious bootlegs. Is there an Ebay link for these because they don't show up on Ebay. Are these from a past sale?

well if they are legit they must be the rarest of the rare...and just when you think you have everything something else pops up.

The sleves do not match the time frame of A BIT OF LIVERPOOL.

perhaps the original sleeves got lost or damaged...its easy to find replacement sleeves from a later period.

I was thinking that as well, although it could just be that the seller put them in any Motown sleeve he could find.

I wonder if these are legit. According to J. Randy Tabborrelli's Diana discography, A HARD DAY'S NIGHT was the recording that was serviced to radio stations to promote the album, and I believe it had a catalog number as well.

Yeah, the sleeves are not from 1965 and if they are straight promos or taken from the Liverpool album, they are not rare musically speaking. If you've got the Liverpool album, you probably have these. Now a promo of Eight Days A Week by the Supremes would be rare.

I asked the same question. They don't show up on Ebay nor Ebay Uk. Probably fakes.

I don't know how to post the link..but they are on ebay u.k..yes I have these tracks many times over on various cds and albums...I was talking about their rarity on promo 45...not the actual tracks.

they have been sold...thats why they are not showing up.

They would still show up even if they had been sold within the last few days. It would that indicate bidding was over, but you could see what they sold for

Even when I casually look at someng on Ebay, it lets me know what I looked at hours later. I guess some of us just wanted a closer look at these records or more information. There was no catalog numbers on these two mysterious records and the times had been writen in ink. Most radio station promos have the playing times or lengths of the songs printed on them. But I have seen fake or bootleg pressings on Motown records in the UK before and that's probably what these were.

mowsville....

Do you know what they sold for? Or what the bidding was at when you looked at it?

Further proof that they are bootlegs:
If you look at the credits listed on the two 45's pictured, you'll note that the composer's names are reversed [[McCartney-Lennon). These two songs were copyrighted and credited to Lennon-McCartney.

On the 'Liverpool' album the credits are given as McCartney-Lennon.

They still appear to be bootlegs even if they were pressed up by Motown's UK office. There is no publisher's information. 45 pounds is about $70.00 or $80.00 US dollars.

Kam, you're right about white label 'promos' being sold in the UK. They're almost always the Northern Soul style sounds, but ones that have emerged after being previously unreleased, that never would have been pressed up around the time they were recorded. These are definitely bootlegs. But these are obviously aimed at the NS crowd, so why would these Bit of Liverpool tracks be pressed up?

mowsville

Soulwally that's exactly what I was thinking...these are definitely not aimed at the NS crowd as are other bootlegs i.e Tammi's "all I do" Marvin's "love starved heart" and Brenda's "reconsider"...that's why these were such a mystery to me.

Kamasu_Jr

The two records are not typical Northern Soul sounds. But I have seen records pressed for that market and its devotees, whom pay outrageous sums for rare records. But $70.00 American for 2 records is not record setting.
