I have an acetate that says "mastered by George Fowler" on it and another that is supposedly him singing a demo. [[according to DFTMC) I've never heard of him before. Who was he and what was his position, etc.? Is he still alive? Any info is appreciated.

George Fowler was a Motown producer/musician in the early days. He headed Motown's gospel division, mainly he produced gospel artists for Divinity. He produced songs recorded in 1963 by my grandfather's group the Sons of Zion and the Wright Specials, etc. However by 1964, Berry Gordy decided to discontinue Divinity and Fowler was out. What is the acetate you have ?

Aside from his duties w/ the acts on Divinity, Fowler also wrote and/or produced songs for La Brenda Ben, Mable John, Eddie Holland, Henry Lumpkin, Liz Lands, Marvin & Mary, the Supremes, the Contours and Marv Johnson from 61-64. Oddly, he also produced "Everytime I Feel The Spirit" for the Supremes in 1967, several years after his departure from the label.

George Fowler was an organist, session player and GospeI and Blues and R&B songwriter and producer at Motown Records. He produced virtually ALL Motown's Gospel releases [[first on Tamla and Motown Records, and then was the producer who ran Motown's Divinity Records. I never thought he LEFT Motown in 1964. I believe I have some records from 1965 and 1966, with his name on them. i assume that he left in late 1968 or so.

I wonder if George Fowler was pianist/bandleader/producer, Ted Fowler's, son. Ted worked at Motown in their formative years [[1959-61).

I've never heard of him... Was he a touring pianist/bandleader or studio? What are some songs he produced? I want a lot more info on George and Ted if anybody knows more.

Ted [[T.J.) Fowler had his own band starting in the late 1940s. He produced for several Detroit labels, and ran some of his own [[Puff Records and a few others). He worked with Charles Fulton, James Hendrix, Robert West, Berry Gordy Jr.

TJ Fowler's band was T-Bone Walker's back-up band for some of the late 1040s and early 1950s. His band recorded for Detroit's Paradise Records in the mid 1940s, and then had a several year run in the late 1940s and early '50s with New York's Savoy Records, and then in 1953-55 with Chicago's States Records. He was a session player for Motown in 1959-61. He was a producer with several small Detroit labels during the late 1960s including Detroit Sound and Puff Records [[the latter which he owned).

I am sure reading, or hearing, some years ago when Ian Levine was tracking down all the former Motown Artists to record for him that he had tracked down LaBrenda Ben but it was her husband George Fowler that was not keen, hence no La Brenda Motorcity recordings.

Oh wow I just listened to Labrenda Ben's "Just Be Yourself" this morning and George Fowler was credited as one of the writers.

Now, it seems that George Fowler might be T.J.'s younger brother. George Fowler's brother was said to be gospel group, The Wright Specials', pianist. T.J. was a pianist, who worked for Motown from 1959-61[[he was also around in 1962). He must have brought his brother to Motown in 1962.

Hmm...

Does anyone have a picture of George...? I'm very curious to see what he looks like. I hate having a name without a face to go with it.
