Dang, you sure found a mother lode of Billy on youtube, no place, tracks I don't even have.
Billy's rendition of Temptation's Bout To Get Me has always been a favorite of mine though
I love The Knight Brother's original [[? I think...). Love all of Billy's stuff but I have to say
Strange Feeling is the cut I never tire of, it reminds me of Fats Waller, a jazz pianist, the kind
of stuff he'd write and the background vocals by The Jewels I'm told, out Bluebelle The Bluebelles....

I would love to see Ace/Kent issue a complete singles set [[both A&B sides) on Billy since I'm still missing 2 or 3 of his singles. Love "Strange Feeling"! There's very little I don't like by Billy.

"Temptation's 'Bout To Get Me" is a tough call for me. I really like all 4 versions that I have - the two you mentioned - and renditions by the Rascals and Virgil Brothers. TBTGM is just a great tune. Funny thing is I'm not really one for covers unless you do something spectacular or totally different from the original version that sounds good to my ears. But there's always exceptions w/ certain tunes where you love the song so darn much that you welcome another artist's take on the song if they do a decent enough job with it. There's also the rare occasion where you end up liking the cover version more than the original. A good example of this is Dee Dee Sharp's version of 10cc's "I'm Not In Love." I liked 10cc's version when it came out but when Dee Dee's take was released later that year I was totally blown away and til this day when I wanna hear INIL I'll listen to Dee Dee's version.

I hear what you're saying about covers, a lot of people feel that way but actually that is how
a lot of tunes with great melodies become standards. A lot of my favorite songs are things
that were first recorded 10 even 20+ years before I was even born. And I know you have to
appreciate how Billy just swung the hell out of Summertime. Anyway, I've never heard The Virgil Brothers TBTGM so I'll have to youtube it, oh and I couldn't agree with you more about
Dee Dee Sharp's I'm Not In Love. She killed that thing...

I'm supposed to be working on reunion stuff and ya'll got me listening to music! Love Billy Stewart and saw him at the Uptown. He tore the Uptown down singing Strange Feeling. Back in '71, his cousin worked part time for a friend of mine who had a janitorial company. Mr. Stewart was in his 60s back then and was a tiny small framed man who was a sweetheart.

Nosey, are you saying that back in '71 Billy was in his 60's or were you speaking about Billy's cousin? If you were speaking of Billy, he passed away in January, 1970 at the age of 32.

I was speaking of his cousin, Mr. Stewart; can't remember his first name.

I was lucky to see Billy perform a few times, even got to see him do a couple impromtu numbers on the piano at the "Blue Angel", his club in D.C. in 1966.

Tiny small framed man clued me she was talking about the cousin , Billy was a big fat man,
he even sang about it a number of times. Oh, I wish I could have seen him do Strange Feeling live, Nosey. I'm so jealous right now. Dang...I don't usually play the "what if" game
but wouldn't it really have been nice if he had lived long enough to re-connect with Marvin
Gaye, maybe even collaborate like Marvin and Willie Hutch did?...My.......

I have always liked Sittin' In the Park, To Love, To Love and Cross My Heart, those ol' belly rubbing, slow dance grooves.

Not good enough, as it would leave off some great recordings, topped by "I'm No Romeo". We'd need a complete anthology.

Robb, a complete Chess recordings anthology for Billy Stewart is something I've been hoping for, but I doubt we'll see it. It's my understanding that Andy McKaie, the highly acclaimed reissue compiler and producer, has retired. He was Universal's go-to guy for Chess reissues for the last 25 years or so. I doubt that there is anyone left at Universal who knows or cares anything about Chess reissues.

I agree with Robb, there should be a complete anthology.
"I'm No Romeo" is one example of a great record by Billy that most people don't even know.
