I thought it was a bit of an unusual song for Gladys Knight & The Pips in 1975. But, then, Black artists commonly redid songs made famous by pop artists in the 70s.

I was treated to a nice surprise a few years ago when attending Bette Midler's final concert during her stay at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. She had two or three guest stars just "drop in" that night and Gladys was one of them. She did a splendid rendition of Try to Remember/The Way We Were. Although I had gone to see Bette, it was almost the highlight of the evening because of being unexpected.

I know what you mean, but somehow she/they were able to pull it off splendidly. The recording received a lot of airplay in Detroit back at the time.

Oh yeah, they played it like crazy here in So. Arizona too.

Yes, it was their highest charting U.K. record as well, peaking at #4 in 1975. Two years later "Baby Don't Change your Mind" also reached #4 but had a shorter chart run.

Roger

Roger, that is very interesting. "Baby Don't Change your Mind" was a mild hit here in the States. It did not receive as much radio airplay as their previous hits. I bought it, but it did not do well in the U.S. across the board.

Gladys Knight was born to sing. Her versions of TWEW and Help Me Make Through The Night
gave me tremendous pleasure. Never thought of them as odd at all...

Same here. I use to hear it on the radio overnight and it just makes you all good and warm. Love me some Gladys Knight!

I would guess this was about 4 years ago. It would have been in January of whatever year Bette wrapped up her stint at Caesar's.

I'd rather hear her sing something else. Gladys Knight and Dionne Warwick have always been a little envious of Barbra Streisand. Gladys is the ony one who had a hit with one of Streisand's songs.

There was also this Streisand remake hit Kamasu .. #39 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, #33 Billboard R&B and #16 in the U.K. in 1968 ..

Gladys' voice is, to me, as remarkable as Babs' and I loved this medley the second I heard it. Her voice has always been in my top ten of all-time and, these days, I prefer her to Queen Ree! Oddly, both are quite inconsistent in person [[I'm told - I've never seen Queen Ree bad, but everyone I know has - and there were streams of early exits the last time I saw her, but I liked it.) Gladys can be great or a giant disappointment live. It's worth the effort, though.

Gladys Knight never disappoints in concert. I've seen her at least 15 times with and without the Pips and she always delivers a spectacular show.

Gladys Knight never disappoints YOU. YOU always perceive her show to be spectacular, not so for others. Many others. That being said, when she's on, she's amazing. She can still sing my fave, "I Don't Want To Do Wrong" as well as my sainted 45. In 1988, she walked through a 70 minute show halfheartedly and only did a 5 minute medley of her Motown hits. In Vegas at The Flamingo, she prattled on incessantly about the awards she won, blah blah blah - but she sang well. I've seen her 8 times, definitely hit or miss, but when she's on, she's great [[except doing Midnight Train and Best Thing as sing-a-longs,) I'm glad she never disappoints you. LOTS of people do not appreciate all that burlesque with Bubba, btw. People come to hear Gladys, not her relatives taking up 15 minutes with baggy pants sight gags and impersonations of other Motown acts. Sweety, I am glad that you enjoy them!

Last time I saw her in concert she talked about The Way We Were & said that she had refused to record it as it was such a big song for Barbra Streisand, she was told that her concert was being recorded for a TV special & they released TWWE from that, which is why it is live.

Excellent story Miss Motown and thank you! I'm sure Gladys is happy now that they did release it live.

I totally agree. Gladys Knight is in my top 3 performers. Diana, Gladys, and Barbra. I have seen Gladys a few times and her shows are definitely hit or miss. The first time I saw her she was spectacular and amazing. I told many of my friends how great she was live. A couple of years later took some family and friends to see her and the show was disappointing. My brother said she needed to sing more and stop talking so much. She talked more than she sang. I totally agreed. This was not the same show that I really enjoyed the first time.

I've lost track of how many times I have seen Gladys [[with and without the Pips) but I am sure that it is more than thirty and less than fifty. Her show has always been very appealing to me except for a short period in the nineties. [[She may have been married to motivational speaker Les Brown at the time) I think some of him rubbed off on her and she was motivational speaking too much and singing not enough.

Outside of that talkative period, I have never been disappointed in her shows. I saw her a few months ago and she was in strong voice and loving the feedback from the responsive audience. A few days earlier, I had seen Mary at the same theatre and she had to work hard to get the audience to respond. Not her fault, just a different type of audience..

The Way We Were was not one of my favorite Gladys songs.

I am one of the many fans who does appreciate all that burlesque with Bubba. People old enough to have seen Gladys Knight and the Pips, remember seeing concerts where they had no opening act. They performed as three entities, Gladys Knight and the Pips, then Gladys Knight and then The Pips.

Yes, I go to a Gladys Knight concert to hear her sing [[not preach) But I also enjoy seeing one of her relatives taking up 15 minutes with baggy pants sight gags and impersonations of other Motown acts. And he is not just one of her relatives. He is BUBBA and he is a PIP. And I would be disapointed if he was not part of her show.

that's cool. We all like different things. People were leaving Aretha in droves and I was loving it. There's a clip of Gladys doing I Don't Want To Do Wrong last year that literally blows me away. She's a major talent, but I don't care for the prattle or the comedy or her impersonation of Miss Ross. At all. I see her and Dionne every time they are around here at one of the casinos.

Speaking of Gladys, I just read that Lenny Kravitz wrote Gladys a new song for Oprah's Butler movie. In the movie, there is a little section in the mid 1970s that features Gladys Knight and the Pips singing “Midnight Train to Georgia.” But now, in the same spot, there is another Gladys Knight song, and this one is all new and original.

According to the article written by Roger Friedman, just three weeks ago, Lenny Kravitz– who’s in the movie– was asked to write a new song to give “The Butler” an entry for the Oscar category. A few singers were considered including Diana Ross. But everyone involved just wanted Gladys. The song as it is now in the movie is an acoustic version. But the article says that a fuller version, with a symphony orchestra, will make it into the final print.

So Gladys may be on her way to singing an oscar nominated song. If so, I'm sure we will see her singing it at the Oscar Awards.

Just to let all of you know.

My beautiful wife of 25 years Cecilia Rose
passed away last April 16, 2013 at 2:30 pm.

Her last words on this earth were Gladys's
when she said to me

"You're the best thing that ever happened to me."

It still touches my heart every time I play the song.

In my cd player in the car is Gladys and the Pips Greatest Hits

The released recording of TWWW was recorded as part of a live concert on July 27 1974 at The Pine Knob Amphitheatre in Detroit, by Buddah Records. The full concert was not realeased until 1996, by BMG released as "The Lost Live Album". The liner notes state that Gladys did not know the concert was being recorded.

On CBS THIS MORNING, Bubba has said that he got Buddah to record the show because Gladys was getting such a good response to THE WAY WE WERE. They didn't tell her about it.

One of their Pine Knob shows was also recorded for Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, which may be the tv show that Gladys is referring to. THE WAY WE WERE didn't make it to that show.
