This has a falsetto vocal not to be believed. Detroit gospel rocked so hard, I am told, that people often forgot they were in church and popped their fingers and cut a few steps. The breakdown at 1:11 was borrowed from my granddad's group, the Sons of Zion. They could blow and often battled the Violinaires during church programs. Sometimes the Sons won, sometimes The Violinaires won. The Violinaires had a contract with Chess, while the Sons were tied up in lawsuits with Motown.

I managed to find over a minute of a song by the Sons recorded in the late 1960s after Motown. It's kind of raw because Bill Moss didn't do too many takes.

I love the quartets to bad it's a dying breed especially in the northern states. Even the young folks in the south don't embrace the sound these days. I wish the likes of Kirk Franklin would at least have a quartet as an opening act for his tours.

Here's Joe Willie and the Deuteronomaires.

There was a time when gospel quartets ruled they had the sisters falling out if they were good and had someone who could hoop, holler and squall. Now it's choirs and they all want to dance, shake their rumps and have someone out in front like Kirk Franklin. My dad says I picked a poor sound bite for the Sons. He said they had other, better records like Love In Action. It was a bigger hit on the East Coast and throughout the south. I'll put it on later.

That style of Gospel, The Violinaires, is never coming back. The sensibilities to even create
that sound doesn't exist anymore except in those who will soon be off to Glory. That was my
grandparents music and I almost cried this morning remembering how excited my Grandma
used to get come revival meeting time. Kam, that Sons of Zion clip was brief but beautiful...
I never really cared for the direction Gospel music went in the 90's. Hope I don't offend anyone but I have no use whatsoever for Kirk Franklin or his hip-hospel...

You know I know what you're saying, Splanky. I prefer that gospel sound like it's supposed to and that it touch the soul and not have you bouncing like you at the club.
