They didn’t set the charts on fire during the 70s, but their music impacted the sort of people who are able to position themselves to set up a more lasting cultural legacy than other bands.

I'm sure the documentary probably gets into this, but Stax Records was responsible for the marketing and distribution of Ardent Records from 1972 to 1975. Rock critics loved the two Big Star albums that came out on Ardent during this period, but hardly anyone else knew these records existed due to poor marketing and distribution.
