He had a huge hit record for Motown in the 80's, 1984 to be exact. It was played at all the clubs and on radio:

Shrugs It's relevant because he's Berry Gordy Jr.'s son? Children of famous people get divorced all of the time.

He wasn't 'just' Berry Gordy's son. He had his own career that had nothing to do with Berry Gordy. He got into Motown without Berry knowing, with the help of half brother Kerry.

I read about him too. He's still referred to in that EUR link/article as an 80's One Hit Wonder. One Hit Wonders get divorced all of the time.

I think a lot of the appeal of his big hit "Somebody's Watching You" was down to it featuring backing vocals from MICHAEL JACKSON.

I think so too. Thriller was hot at the time and radio needed more Michael Jackson and Rockwell was smart enough to have had Michael sing his hook.

Does anyone seriously believe that MYTH that Rockwell got into Motown without Berry knowing? I mean, come on.

Ha! I was going to write the same thing! Or that the people who signed him had no clue who he was... And so this "unknown", who walks in off the street, just happens to get the hottest performer on the planet to do some vocals on his debut single? Yeah, right.

Kerry Gordy, the head of A&R at Motown going by Kerry Ashby, signed him knowing very well who he was. Kerry, Kennedy and the Jackson 5 were all friends in the early 70's that's how they got Michael and Jermaine. You really believe the myth that BG knew everything that was going on, and who everyone at the company was in 1984. Please...

You're right, I didn't know the story. So he was hired by his half brother, who was working for his father's company. Still sounds like nepotism and a stretch to claim that his career had nothing to do with Berry Gordy. And I doubt the song would have done anything without MJ's vocals.

It was a good song; the MJ connection helped a lot; he was a one hit wonder. The Berry Gordy connection can hardly be completey ignored. And yes, children of celebrities get divorced all the time.

Berry Gordy may not have been aware of everyone signed to Motown, or working for the label by 1984 but surely he knew his son got signed and was going to release music.

Some trivia, for those who have the Diana Soundtrack from 1971 or the bootleg video of that TV special, she introduces Kennedy from the audience who says his favorite group is the Jackson 5

I always liked OBSCENE PHONE CALLER very much. Not a huge hit but it broke into the Top 40. Also written by Rockwell, as was his tasty SOMEBODY'S. He seemed very talented to me, with a nice comic edge. I've never considered him a one-hit wonder.

I bought his single 45 - He's a Cobra when it was first released. It's not a bad release.

Obscene Phone Caller - I haven't heard this song in YEARS. I forget how good some of "Motown's" mid 80's material was. A little campy..maybe, but hey it was the 80's!

Rockwell was definitely ahead of his time with this song. Big Brother has been watching us ever since we wrote or received our first email, made a cell call, tweeted, looked at Facebook or any other social medium or posted an unsavory comment under an assumed name on YouTube.

We can purge, delete, defrag, re-program and re-install. But "someone" is still out there watching and recording our every move.

None of this, of course, is breaking news. Hardly a day goes by that some high-profile politician, athlete or entertainer isn't bitten in the butt by a "private" digital exchange. The same goes for the average individual..

and particularly, unusual individuals or oddballs.

And taking that a step further, to individuals that appear somewhat threatening or embrace radical ideologies.

And as the President of the United States says, "most of us agree with some level of surveillance".
