CNN Poll: Was Bush better president than Obama?

[[CNN) - Americans are divided over whether President Barack Obama or his predecessor has performed better in the White House, according to a new national poll.

And a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Friday also indicates in the battle for Congress, Republicans hold large advantages over the Democrats among independents, men and blue-collar whites. The poll also indicates that Republicans are much more enthusiastic than Democrats to vote.

By 47 to 45 percent, Americans say Obama is a better president than George W. Bush. But that two point margin is down from a 23 point advantage one year ago.

"Democrats may want to think twice about bringing up former President George W. Bush's name while campaigning this year," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

"But that doesn't mean that Americans regret their decision to put Obama in the White House in 2008. By a 50 to 42 percent margin, the public says that Obama has done a better job than Sen. John McCain would have done if he had won. And by a 10-point margin, Americans also say that Joe Biden has done a better job than Sarah Palin would have done as vice president," adds Holland.

According to the poll, 45 percent of the public approves of the job Obama's doing as president, up three points from late last month, with 52 percent disapproving. Fifty-nine percent of independents disapprove of how the Obama's handling his duties, with 37 percent giving him a thumbs up.

In the fight for control of Congress, 52 percent of likely voters say they would vote for the generic Republican candidate in their district if the election were held today, with 45 percent saying they would back the Democrat. The Republican's seven point margin is down from a nine point advantage late last month.

According to the poll, independents say they would vote for the Republican candidate over the Democrat by a two to one margin.

"Blue-collar whites are also a particular problem for Democrats. Among white voters who describe their family as "white collar," the two parties are essentially tied. But more than seven out of ten whites who describe themselves as "blue collar" are planning to vote Republican in November," adds Holland.

The poll indicates that opinions on the economy may have a lot to do with that. Only 17 percent say the economy is starting to recover, and nearly four in ten say that the country is still in a downturn and conditions are getting worse.

The survey also suggests a strong gender gap.

"Democrats appear to be making steady gains among women and now get a majority of their vote, but the gender gap persists and more than six in ten men say they plan to vote Republican this year," says Holland.

According to the poll, another gap also exists: The enthusiasm gap. Most Republicans say they are extremely or very enthusiastic about voting this year. But only a third of Democrats feel the same way.

"That's the principle reason why the "generic ballot" question is tied among all registered voters while the likely voter numbers show an advantage for the Republicans," adds Holland. "There are plenty of people who support the Democratic candidate, but many of them are probably not going to actually cast a ballot. In fact, if you look at "unlikely voters" - people who are registered to vote but unlikely to cast a ballot - the Democrats have a six-point edge on the generic ballot question."

The CNN/Opinion Research Corporation national poll was conducted October 5-7, with 1,008 adult Americans, including 938 registered voters and 504 likely voters, questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus percentage points, with a sampling error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points for likely voters.

HELL NO!

Obama has accomplished a LOT for the middle class in less than two years than Bush ever did. All Bush Jr. ever helped were the wealthy. Bush Jr. pandered to the religious-right wackos, and started two wars served no purpose. he extended tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations at the expense of our surplus under President Clinton. Then, they borrowed money from China to pay for it. Then, these same jackasses are trying to blame Obama for everything Bush Jr. and the republikkkans did, including the initial bailouts, which, the republikkkans and their faux news mouthpiece have developed a case of selective amnesia about, were begged for by Bush and Ben Bernanke. On top of that, there have been allegations and evidence that the banks were bullied into taking the bailout money.

The Obama stimulus packaged helped stop the bleeding, and we would have no doubt plunged into a depression if we hadn't had it. And guess who mouthed off about it all the way to the bank? Yup! republikkkcans. Obama helped the U.S. car industry, even took over GM. The republikkkans said it wouldn't work, and that it was a waste. Guess what? It wirked!

Where democrats made their mistakes was not sticking to the agenda. They made deals with the republikkan satan, and it crippled the health care and financial bills. Just enough time for the republikkkans to stall for time, pally the worst of their party via the tea-baggers, and claim Obama a failure, all the while winning public opinion by pandering to the racists via faux news. And, the republikkan's crowning coup through all of this is a supreme court ruling about campaign finance, overturning a respected policy that had been in place since the early part of the last century. We are now seeing the results of that invisible donor money.

If you had no plans to vote, or if you are not registered and still have time, and you are a U.S. citizen, I strongly to urge you to VOTE if you don't like the direction the republikkkans are taking. And, don't trust that people are too smart to vote for these tea-bagger clowns. It could happen. Do you want to take the chance?

I'm very critical of Obama, and the mis-steps he has taken. I almost can't blame a lot of people for being pissed. But, these people need to understand that it is the obstructionist tactics used by the republikkkans that have stalled much of what Obama's trying to do to help this country.

This country will NEVER see true change until the 2 party system is destroyed. Mindless robots on both sides will walk into a voting booth and click R or D depending on who they hate less without care or consideration of the PERSON behind R and D.

Change...lol

A lot of us are trying. It's just a matter of getting the right people out to vote because younger people tend to not vote in congressional elections. Politics generally disinterests them because of all the crap, and the republicans know it. Older people have more time on their hands, and, weather permitting, will go out and vote. Problem is, older people tend to vote republican, and the republikkkan/tea-baggers are a bunch of extremists this year. A lot of them refuse to admit to themselves that they dislike Obama just because he's Black.

For Canadians, I think most of us are appalled at how America has turned on President Obama. At Thanksgiving supper, one of my son's friends said "They don't like him anymore?" And was pretty surprised at the apparent backlash.

From our point of view, as long as you don't end up Bush, Cheney, or Palin coming back or slipping in there ~ we are generally pleased. Obama would fit in well in Canada and we could not care less if he was brown, yellow, orange, white or pink in color; there might be some objection to the quality of his French; and the ability to be fluent in that language is a requirement in Canada.

Rob,

Many Americans still like Obama. They are just frustrated that things haven't turned around fast enough. They expected magic from the magic negro.

The ones that don't like him live off a steady diet of Fox news and other far-right radical extremists.

The Fox News channel and those other far right extremists are what makes me start believing in Fidel Castro, that Ajaminahad nut in Iran, the chubby nut in Venezuela whose name is escaping me, Netanayu in Israel, and the dad and son space cadets in North Korea. All those orbiting dudes would just lock the guys at Fox up and either throw away the key or blow up the cell.

Those guys are still nuts, and i would never believe or trust half of what they say, but I never totally dismiss anything, either.

meanwhile, NewsCorp, the company that owns Fox and USA Today, is pouring money into republikkkans coffers to spread lies about Obama, democrats, and progressives. Sickening what's happening.

A lot of the same people who bought George Bush's cowboy act, twice I might add are the same people who voted
for Barack Obama for all of the wrong reasons. The immediacy of the radical change in American political history by the
election of a black man to the highest office has fooled far too many people into believing a turn around in this country's
social and economic landscape would be just as rapid. A wish for a Magic Negro, indeed. The world is still the same world
made up of the same imperfect human beings. Hate, violence, racism, rape and fear will go on. Same as it ever was...

splanky, you're on target. To put it simply:

Geo. Bush:

* Attacked and took over two countries.
* Spent the surplus and bankrupted the treasury.
* Shattered record for biggest annual deficit in history.
* Set economic record for most private bankruptcies filed in any 12 month period.
* Set all-time record for biggest drop in the history of the stock market.
* First president in decades to execute a federal prisoner.
* First president in US history to enter office with a criminal record.
* First year in office set the all-time record for most days on vacation by any president in US history.
* After taking the entire month of August off for vacation, presided over the worst security failure in US history.
* Set the record for most campaign fund-raising trips than any other president in US history.
* First US President to finish his term with a net loss of American jobs.
*Cut unemployment benefits for more out of work Americans than any president in US history.
* Set the all-time record for most foreclosures in a 12 month period.
* Appointed more convicted criminals to administration positions than any president in US history.
* Set the record for the least amount of press conferences than any president since the advent of television.
* Signed more laws and executive orders amending the Constitution than any president in US history.
* Presided over the biggest energy crises in US history and refused to intervene when corruption was revealed.
* Presided over the highest gasoline prices in US history and refused to use the national reserves as past presidents have.
* Cut health care benefits for war veterans.
* Dissolved more international treaties than any president in US history.
* Created the most secretive and un-accountable of any in US history.

That's just for starters. Now a quick run down on Barack Obama:

Less than halfway through his first term, Obama has compiled a remarkable track record. As president, he has rewritten America's social contract to make health care accessible for all citizens. He has brought 100,000 troops home from war and forged a once-unthinkable consensus around the endgame for the Bush administration's $3 trillion blunder in Iraq. He has secured sweeping financial reforms that elevate the rights of consumers over Wall Street bankers and give regulators powerful new tools to prevent another collapse. And most important of all, he has achieved all of this while moving boldly to ward off another Great Depression and put the country back on a halting path to recovery.

Along the way, Obama delivered record tax cuts to the middle class and slashed nearly $200 billion in corporate welfare — reinvesting that money to make college more accessible and Medicare more solvent. He single-handedly prevented the collapse of the Big Three automakers — saving more than 1 million jobs — and brought Big Tobacco, at last, under the yoke of federal regulation. Even in the face of congressional intransigence on climate change, he has fought to constrain carbon pollution by executive fiat and to invest $200 billion in clean energy — an initiative bigger than John F. Kennedy's moonshot and one that's on track to double America's capacity to generate renewable energy by the end of Obama's first term.

On the social front, he has improved pay parity for women and hate-crime protections for gays and lesbians. He has brought a measure of sanity to the drug war, reducing the sentencing disparity for crack cocaine while granting states wide latitude to experiment with marijuana laws. And he has installed two young, female justices on the Supreme Court, creating what Brinkley calls "an Obama imprint on the court for generations."

What's even more impressive about Obama's accomplishments, historians say, is the fractious political coalition he had to marshal to victory. "He didn't have the majority that LBJ had," says Goodwin. Indeed, Johnson could count on 68 Democratic senators to pass Medicare, Medicaid and the Voting Rights Act. For his part, Franklin Roosevelt had the backing of 69 Senate Democrats when he passed Social Security in 1935. At its zenith, Obama's governing coalition in the Senate comprised 57 Democrats, a socialist, a Republican turncoat — and Joe Lieberman.

I think the answer is clear. But, if you need more info, try the rest of this article:

Amen . Bush should go down as one of the worst Presidents of all time.

But, as you see, the republikkkans will do all they can to fix that.

What everyone who thought Bush was worst is to vote in that poll and ensure you don't let the conservatives/republikkans/tea baggers control history.
