Ever since reading about Thelma Houston's original in Sharon Davis' book, I've wanted to hear this. While searching for video of Diana Ross' performance of the song in the 1977[[?) Oscars from Holland draped in white ermine, this number surfaced. I was under the impression that Thelma's performance was unreleased. So much do I know!

The lyrics are somewhat different and there's discussion on the page about the controversy that arose with the song's Oscar nomination because it was not originally written for the film. Both renditions are superlative and distinct enough to carry their own. While Thelma Houston's version could have been a hit in its own right, it never would have been as big a hit as Diana Ross' because Ross' was promoted through the film and Ross' name also sold the song. I'm in Seventh Heaven. Please post if you know of existing video of Ross' performance from Holland.

There was video of Ross performing Do You Know ...on the Oscars. I've seen the footage. Ross was introduced by Walter Matthau who reportedly objected to the introduction he was supposed to give her. The original was allegedly full of platitudes for Ross. Matthau wasn't going to kiss her behind. The fact that the song was not written specifically for Mahogany probably cost it the Oscar. it was the biggest selling movie theme that year and Ross fans raised hell when it looked like it wasn't going to be nominated. I'm still hoping Thelma Houston's version gets released. She also sang the theme for Bingo Long which has never been on digital disc.

Reese! Thanks so much for posting the video link. The memory doesn't seem to be what it used to be with white ermine actually being brown mink.
