As soon as I saw this thread I knew I was gonna be pissed off if it included any songs
I don't presently have then I remember I don't have a physical copy of One Girl Too Late.
Okay...maybe I can fix that. Though I'm not a big fan of her disco tracks like Superstar I'd
totally forgotten how gorgeous the cut Home To Myself is!...OMGGGGGGG!!! Is that on cd
anywhere?... I had a friend years ago who told me he couldn't listen to Brenda Payton; her
sound was too street girl or some such nonsense but she and Linda Jones owned my ears
back in the day. That was music. The use of dynamics on The Touch Of You would stop my
heart. Not too many producers today know how to use that technique properly...Anyway,
great thread!...

I'd completely forgotten how much I like "A Child No One Wanted" and "Right On the Tip of My Tongue". Thanks, nplm, for reminding me.

Hey Splanky,

You know in all the years I've been collecting music and talking endlessly with hundreds of folks about old school music, I've never heard anyone say that Brenda's sound was too street! That's a first for me. LOL I always wanted to listen to Brenda because she was so soothing and her delivery on so many of her ballads were sung with so much sincerity that she made you believe every note she sang. I always feel like crying when I listen to "Dry Your Eyes", "When You're Gone", "Right On The Tip Of My Tongue", "The Touch Of You" and "Home To Myself". For real!! Very few singers can touch me in that way.

"Home To Myself" is on her "I Keep Coming Back For More" CD. "One Girl Too Late" is on two various artists comps -- "Lost Soul" and "Want Lists." FYI, HTM was originally cut and written by Melissa Manchester in 1973.

I remember reading some years ago that her Epic recordings were going to be released with unissued tracks but sadly nothing ever surfaced. I was really looking forward to that CD! :[[

I agree with everything you said Splanky! My buddy Dennis was her boyfriend at one time and he was stationed on a ship off the coast of Nam when he heard Dry Your Eyes and said he cried like a baby. Of course no one believed she was his girlfriend. Brenda indeed was the bomb!

Here's something quite interesting from a Van McCoy thread that I found in the SDF archives that I never knew. The post is from Bobby Eli:

Van was a dear friend of mine and a joy to work with. I played on many of his sessions and he was a gifted producer.
He was a wiz at stacking backing vocals. Just listen to Right on the tip of my tongue.
He could do both male and female parts!!
