Definitely time for an Invictus/Hot show. It's always a pleasure to hear this wonderful music and Jerry Plunk's reminiscing is a great bonus. See you all on the Radiola!:cool:

John;
The last few weeks have been sad with the unexpected passing of so many Tamla/Motown musical talents. Although we shall not forget, this evening's editon of "Nightflight" promises to be a respite from the loss we've recently felt. I'm looking forward to learning a lot about the Invictus/Hot Wax/Ric Tic family of music labels this evening!

Mark....the heaviness of the losses does sadly continue. A few days ago, WOMR lost one of it's very longstanding DJ's....Joe Poire....he was with the station for 25 years.
I'm dedicating tonight's show to him. RIP, Joe......

I am sorry to hear of your loss. Although I am wasn't familiar with Joe, I can certainly see that after 25 years at WOMR, his passing affects many people who got to know him. Hopefully the good vibes and energy you put out this evening will comfort his soul. A hug out to you, my friend!

HDH's Invictus / Hot Wax Records was a natural magnet for me in the late 60s and early 70s after Motown. Initially, I had no idea of HDH's involvement, but I really got into Honey Cone, Flaming Ember, Chairmen of the Board, and the other artists back in the day. Since then, aside from collecting almost all things Motown, I have gone back and collected as much of this catalog on CD as I possibly could. Wonderful, well-produced music across the board!

b. Clyde Darnell Wilson, 25th December 1945, Walhall, South Carolina, U.S.A.

d. 8th January 2011, Ford Hospital, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.

Steve Mancha is very much an underrated singer and performer.

His real name is Clyde Wilson, and he originally hailed from South Carolina [[later moving to Detroit in the mid fifties).

Steve became a highly respected vocalist during the 1960's, although he never truly achieved the fame he richly deserved as a solo artist, he did perform lead vocals for the group 100 Proof Aged In Soul later in his career.

His family relocated to Detroit from South Carolina during 1954.

At the start of the Sixties, Clyde befriended Melvin Davis who was singing for the Fortune Records imprint.
Under his own name of Clyde Wilson, he first signed with Harvey Fuqua [[http://www.soulwalking.co.uk/Harvey%20Fuqua.html) for his HPC label, where he recorded the single 'Just Too Much To Hope For' [[later recorded by Marvin Gaye [[http://www.soulwalking.co.uk/Marvin%20Gaye.html) andTammi Terrell [[http://www.soulwalking.co.uk/Tammi%20Terrell.html)).
Berry Gordy [[http://www.soulwalking.co.uk/Berry%20Gordy.html) then took Harvey's label under the Motown Records [[http://www.soulwalking.co.uk/Motown%20Records.html) umbrella.

Wow, I can't believe how much better "Her Picture Matches Mine" sounds on this mix. On all the CD versions I have Laura gets drowned out. This is the version I remember. Great track, thanks John, thanks Jerry!:cool:

What about the song "Sunshine"?

It's got to be one of my favorites from Flaming Ember.

Sunshine is written by J. Dean ,W. Weatherspoon & R. Miner
Sunshine was the title of Flaming Ember's 2nd album, released in the U.S. but not in the U.K.

Thanks for playing that one, John. It's so true the way you described it. It really builds in an absolutely beautiful production. Definitely reminds me too of "What Becomes..." and rightly so, since it was written by the same duo. I'm glad you liked it too!

Question for Jerry: Being he was the lead vocalist for Flaming Ember and also the drummer: Did the group lay down the music track simultaneously with the vocal or separately? He's such a great singer, but to think he would have to concentrate on the vocal and do drums at the same time I would think would be a great challenge. Just wondering...

Thanks.

Thanks for explaining the recording process. Much appreciated. It stands to reason that recording time in a studio would be considered valuable time and getting the recordings down as was described makes perfect sense. I guess recording vocals with the tracks live would make for many retakes and be super expensive to everyone involved with more chances for error otherwise.

John;
As per usual, a fascinating and extremely fact filled interview, this time around with Jerry. If you could get a rough date that the missing article he mentioned from Billboard, I could try searching on the microfilm at the Vancouver Public Library. Any large city library will most likely have the Billboard and Variety backissues from the beginning on mircofilm. Most reasearchers don't bother with that tedius taask anymore, but that is where the wealth of research material lies! Cheers!
