I would definately say the girls have a better group of singers this year over verses the boys. For the boys Vincent was a natural.

I have to agree with Soul Sister. The girls have the edge for the first time in years IMHO. I haven't picked out anyone yet who was a great as Joshua Ladet was last year, but it's early in the season. He's the best I've evern seen on any of the singing shows. I hope we hear something from him soon.

It should be a good year for Idol.

I think I may have to take back my words, lol.....
These male singers were fab:

Vincent... [[I thought did a better performance last week, didn't think "Ensd Of The Road" was good enough to showcase his vocal range and ablities). But he's got what it takes.

Curtis... killed it tonight, great performance, laid it out.

Devon... whom I loved from the beginning has a quality to his voice that is so pure and effortlessly smooth as silk, very moving. Pretty vocals.

They WILL give the girls a run for the money. I just hope America isn't voting "stupid" again this year but vote's for the best voices.

I'm sorry to say that Burnell is not a favorite of mine. I thought Cortez was good last week, but this week he lost it. So did Vincent. I like Curtis and Devin a lot. The girls, however, seem to have the upper hand this season.

Last night, I thought that Cortez was much better than the judges gave him credit for. By the same token, I thought they overpraised Burnell. He did ok, but I wasn't knocked out.

So far, Devin is my favorite male. He has a really pleasing tone to his voice, and his singing sounds effortless.

Re the females, I'm loving Candice, with Amber being a close second. My sentimental favorite is Zoanette, although IMO, her personality is what gets her over, not her vocals. There were many girls that they let go that sang much better.

On a sad note, I really felt sorry for Charlie Askew. I didn't care for his performance at all. But when he talked about how unhappy he was, I felt bad for him.

That kid Charlie Askew delivered a truly weird moment. He's young but seems to need some counseling. That BURNELL HICKS is a Broadway star. He's ready to do something big like Fantasia or Jennifer Hudson.

I haven’t watched it this year. I might tune in when they get to the first round of the finals to see who the final 12/13 will be and check out the new judges. Question: Can contestants play instruments while singing this season, or have instruments been banned, as they were early in the show’s run? I ask because for 5 seasons running white guys with guitars have won and it’s becoming a bit of a joke. If instruments are still allowed, then I suspect another reasonable looking white guy with guitar will win as the Idol core fanbase is very conservative and gets off on these type of performers.

I was thrilled, too, reese, and was cheering when they made it. Devin is a good vocalist with an interesting tone to his voice. Candice can sing her behind off. I think she's capable of singing anything and it will be interesting to watch her as the season progresses. Curtis is another I'm watching. He needs to be careful not to lose control of his voice, but he's good.

Some have played instruments, but its mostly been keyboards. The only guitarist that I remember off hand was a black dude, who got cut after doing what I thought was a good rendition of FEVER.

I agree about Curtis. I wasn't surprised at all. I was surprised to see Devin in the bottom two with him. I think he is arguably the best male singer they have, but I guess the voters this week didn't think so.

And yes, Candace did do a gender switch in I [[WHO HAVE NOTHING). She mentioned she was doing a version of Ben E. King's song, so she might have learned it from his recording and forgot to switch for her version. As I recall, she only did it at the bridge. I think she fixed it later.

I think you may be right Reese. She probably learned the song from the record. That's why I tell my students not to just learn something from a record. " Candice sang it, but that switch threw me. She could have been given Dee Dee Warwick's record. But to me, the only contestant who comes across as a star already is Amber. She's got such confidence. And yes, she reminds me of Whitney Houston. Burnell Taylor had better change up soon and drop those dramatic ballads - although he sings them well. But he can't do the same kind of songs every week.

I didn’t see the show Wednesday night but maybe the gender switch was deliberate and not a muffed lyric? I did watch a bit of the results show last night. I thought that Curtis guy alternated between being very dull and way over the top as he sang that dreadful “I Believe I can Fly” song [[I really hope he sang it because he had a limited choice of songs to choose from and not because he actually likes it). He deserved to get the boot, from what I saw and heard. I’m going to have to check out this Candace…she’s getting a lot of buzz on the net.

Candice should be getting a lot of buzz on the net, and everywhere for that matter. The girl can sing her behind off. I agree Amber is good and she fits the pop star mold they're looking for. However, I don't think she's as good as Candice.

I iked Curtis but he suffers from over singing, so I was not surprised to see him go. Devin has the best voice of the males IMHO, but he did a poor job the other night.

Candice has been consistant and hasn't missed once since she's been on the show. If she continues to deliver every week, there should be no contest, but we've seen great vocalists knocked off the show before. We know there's a huge southern [[country) voting block and many teeny boppers vote as well. That's why we've seen some less than stellar winners on Idol.

I thought Candice was superb, once again. It wasn't her best performance, but she remains consistantly good. Devin came back last night with a great performance of "Long & Winding Road". He has such a good voice - the best of the males for me. Janelle was good IMO. I feel basicially the same. Candice could sing the phone book at this point and sound good. I wouldn't have chosen COME TOGETHER for her, but she performed it well enough.

Finally watching a competition episode tonight. Theme is Music of Detroit—not just Motown, but any singer from Detroit [[there’s going to be a country group performance of a Madonna song—oh my—trainwreck may be on deck!). I can see and hear why you’re all very excited about Candice. She has an old school soul singer vibe to her and she’s very good. She may end up being too old school to win it, but I bet she’ll be there until at least the Final 3/4.

It was the CANDICE & AMBER show!! :)

"Don't Play That Song For Me" should not have been a choice since it was a New York song written in New York by Ahmet Ertigen. Ben E. King recorded the "original" version in 1962.
Aretha covered it 8 years later in 1970 in New York.
I just think they should have did only songs written and recorded in Detroit since it was a "Detroit" night.
I do love the song though, bought the original record when Ben released it.

Devin still has a pure voice in my opinion, sounds good to my ears.

I never thought of it this way, but it is an interesting take on it. By this same token, they wouldn't have performed I'M GONNA MAKE YOU LOVE ME either, since that was a Kenny Gamble composition.

That said, I thought last night's show was pretty good. Even Lazaro stepped it up. The only contestant who didn't do well [[IMO) was Angie with that limp rendition of SHOP AROUND.

It was also disappointing to see the guys sort of throw Lazaro under the bus for messing up their group number. Granted, he DID mess up the number, and Nikki certainly lit into them for it. But I felt they should have just taken the criticism, and saved the blame for backstage. Even Nikki was sort of signaling them to be quiet when they started commenting.

I turned it off in the middle of Shop Around. The show is just stale at this point. While some of the top 8 are good vocalists, none of them have star quality. I suspect this year’s winner will be the country girl who sang You Keep Me Hangin’ On.

RedHot,

I'm in agreement with you. Soul Sister has a point, but apart from that, my assessment of the vocals is in line with yours. Janelle surprised me with her excellent rendition of "You Keep Me Hanging On". She should release it as her first single. Candice was off the charts and remains my favorite. Last night was the first night I was impressed with Burnell. He did a good job with Stevie Wonder's song. Amber was superb and I agree with Smokey's comment about wanting to turn his TV off when she was in the bottom 3 last week. Devin remains my favorite of the males. That young man can sing! Right on regarding Lazaro. He should have been gone weeks ago. Kree was great IMO, and she's more than a country singer. She's really growing on me week after week. Angie was terrible and the worst performance of the night. She was off key for the entire song and it hurt my ears. lol Last, but not least, Smokey was phenominal, but then he always is. LOVE him. He looked great and gave the contestants excellent advise. You could tell Jimmy was in awe of him, and he should be.:)

I was totally bummed last night to see that Devin was voted off. I still think he had the best voice of the males, and though I was not surprised, as he has been in the bottom three consistently, it was still disappointing to see him go. Lazro might end up as the "Sanjaya" of this season.

On a positive note, I thought it was nice that Aretha sent Kree a message of congratulations for singing her song "DON'T PLAY THAT SONG" so well.

"Lazaro needs to go,he stayed, and Devin was let go?REALLY?"

That is all political. While it is impressive how he overcomes his stutter when he sings ,his accent is not suitable for all around Pop songs. He does better with songs in his native language. He is still there to serve as an inspiration to others ,at least that's how I see it. The last ten are still included in the IDOL tours and specials and have a better chance at scoring other work in the industry even though they didn't win. IDOL at this point in the series is just a way of giving some of them exposure. Most of the songs are older than the performers that sang them. My hats off to Mariah who continually expressed SMOKEY as damn near an institution in the music ,although I didn't like that ,to those in certain demographics would be led to think he had a hand in some of the songs that were presented. No mention of HDH etc.

All in all you can't dismiss the fact that ..........it's just television.

What did you think of last night's show??

I thought Kree nailed the Janis Joplin song. I'm concerned for Candice, although I still think she has the best voice of all. She chose the wrong Stones song. She delivered it well, but I would love to have heard her do "Gimme Shelter", which would have fit her voice perfectly. Her power and range would have come through on that tune. Amber was a standout last night and Angie did well, too. Lazaro did a better job than previous weeks, but I still feel he should go home. He should have been voted off weeks ago.

I stopped watching American Idol years ago. I decided to check it out this year for Nicki and Mariah. My thoughts? Lazaro was a favorite from the auditions. It is clear now as the weeks have passed that he isn't up to par. Devin and Burnell were the best singers in the competition. Devin had a real good, smooth and controlled voice. Burnell's voice was unique. Not to crazy about any of the females, none of them are special or unique. I was so disappointed last week when the guys, Lazaro, Devin and Burnell did their group number. Lazaro was not prepared. I'm gonna be honest. IMO Devin and Burnell got voted off because they acted like little bitches. Instead of accepting criticism and taking one for THE TEAM they acted like little divas throwing Lazaro under the bus. I have a feeling the voters did not respond well to that, and now they are gone. I think that Lazaro will be next. I have lost interest in the show again. Most likely I won't be tuning in anymore because I don't like any of the singers left.

Actually teens are not watching AI like they used to 10 years ago. The show’s demographics have aged. Idols’ core audience and voters are middle aged and older women in the south and rural Midwest [[aka flyover country) and their children who are 13 and under. IN recent years, the core fanbase of those white guys with guitars who have won the show have been overweight, sexually frustrated women in their 30s, 40’s and 50s. And the desire of Idol producers to rig the show for a woman to win is the main reason why ratings have taken a tumble because there’s no decent looking white guy with a phallic guitar for Idol’s core fan base to fantasize about and pray for.

As tonight's results show, it isn't so far fetched. Amber was in the bottom two. But Lazaro was finally shown the door.

And he had such a nasty attitude considering that he lasted this long. I wish him luck and I hope he finds his "niche" in the business , but "If you can't run with the big "girls" [[in this case) ,then stay on the porch. Know what I mean? For the longest time, I thought the show was building up to a Candice/Kree finale. But if Kree has another week like this past one, I could see it being down to Candice and Amber.

I don't always agree with the judges or Jimmy Ivine, but I did last night. Amber is really coming on strong now, but that dreadful "McArthur Park" song she sang turned me off because I hate the song. Jimmy was right, the judges were wrong. Jimmy said your can't sing corn like that and he also said the judges didn't want to admit Candice was better than Amber when Candice sang "Emotion". I agreed with the judges when they said last night was Angie's night. Kree had a bad night and it's time for her to go home. I really hope Candice is not in trouble, because she is the best singer and has been consistantly good since day one. I hope she makes it to the final 3 and does a better job next week when her cold should be over. As always, just one woman's opinion.

I think Kree is going home tonight. She's had a rough couple of weeks in my opinion. I agreed with Jimmy about the Amber situation. I loved her first song, but MACARTHUR PARK was a mess. Candice was her usual great self, although I do think she leaned a wee bit towards oversinging last night. For me, the big surprise was Angie, who I thought did well on all three of her numbers. If she keeps it up, she might make the final two.

SMH.............lol! Having lived so closely with the standards and up close to some of the great artists that sing them in such a profound way I may sound too critical here.

Angie ~ to my ears was annoying tonight on "Someone To Watch Over Me", not because people associate it with incidents from Jimmy's life as one of his signature songs but because I felt there was no feeling there and she didn't sing the song right. Angie is young and I am positive she has never lived enough life to "get it" to interpet the lyrics the way they should be delivered.

Kree ~ sorry to say this but I feel Kree's voice is boring with no depth, in every song she sings the 'country' thing comes out. She should never try to sing standards or anything but country, it just doesn't fit.
Jimmy sang a couple songs in the movie "Stormy Weather" about Harold Arlen's life. Those songs Arlen wrote have great depth about the woman he loved so deeply that broke his heart over and over again.

Amber ~ for a young woman her age I thought she sang "My Funny Valentine" so beautifully, nicely done. Loved it.

Candice ~ was perfection, she did no wrong for me, effortless and fluid, just a natural, as good as any pro 'past or present'.
I love "You've Changed" by many great singer, including Jimmy's version on his 1975 album "Can't We Begin Again", for me Candice was as good as any of the great interpeters of jazz standards. I thought she was a lot like Nancy Wilson on it as well as being true to her own gorgeous voice!

I completely agree with your assessment of Candice, S. S.. I would go so far as to say she is one of the best female vocalists I have ever heard. She had me in tears when she sang "You've Changed." She received two standing O's from the judges and she deserved them. She has been consistant throughout the show. As Randy Jackson said last night - this is a singing compettion. It's supposed to be, so if America gets it right, she should win hands down. She was in the bottom two last week - which shocked me, since Kree should have been on the bottom. I'm hoping Candice received enough votes last night to overcome last week's votes.

Here is Candice's performance of "You've Changed". Absolutely INCREDIBLE!!

I don't think Candice will win over Kree. Middle America and teenage girls, white teenage girls - do most of the voting on Idol. They will not choose Candice over Kree unless Candice is spectacular. I've only been watching Idol off and on but I knew Amber would be voted off and the finale should have been between Candice and Amber. And what is up with judge Nicki? She is way out of line, all of the time especially with Mariah Carey. She has no respect for her elders and should be fired. Memphis no longer has the relationship with American Idol that we used to have because the show's producers were not serious about promoting soulful singers and things changed once behind the scenes supporters like Debra Byrd were let go. Has anyone noticed how Memphis contestants are faring on other competing shows like The VOICE? :p ...

You might have a point there. I definitely know singers like Amber and Candice should not have been in the bottom two last week. And ultimately, these Idol voters only seem to like white guys with guitars.

Amber should have stayed. I think Kree should have gone home weeks ago.
If the fantastic CANDICE doesn't win... it will be a travesty! Another oops on America's voting block, like with Jennifer Hudson, as we know when it comes to Idol who votes, mainly teens and the 'country' states.
I cannot wait to hear what Candice's album will sound like. Still waiting to hear Joshua Ledet's!!

Fantasia was better than Jennifer Hudson. At the time this was very true. Fantasia ruled her season. There was just something not quite right about Jennifer Hudson. Didn't Simon Cowell say she was just too much or too over the top? But Jennifer benefitted from the training she got while working on Dreamgirls. Her over the top singing was just right. Now, she's too much again. That Weight Watchers commercial comes on with J screaming "I Got the Power" and I cringe. She needs to just go sit down in my opinion. We've seen her slimmed down body enough already.

I agree. I remember once I said something about Jennifer not being all that and then someone here went on about how she has a Oscar and Diana Ross doesn't? LoL. WTF does that have to do with the price of tea in china? I remember that AI season well. I did not like Jennifer at all. She was too much. Stank attitude and her voice was not consistent. Through life's journey she appears to have become better. I don't hate her at all. I liked one of her songs from her debut album. Admire her weight loss, and the way she carried on after her family was killed. I still think that she over sings everything. I have a friend that laughs at her every time one of her commercials comes on because she is so loud. She is cool in my book, but she was not close to being as good as Fantasia was on that season.

Of the three "divas," as they were being called that season, I thought that Latoya London might have had an edge on Fantasia. Her voice had a really mellow tone. She recorded a version on one of the IDOL albums of IF YOU DON'T KNOW ME BY NOW that is still one of my favorites. But I think she might have come off rather old to the voting audience, as it was always being mentioned that she was married and a stepmother. And some of her performances were mature, as well. The week she was voted off, I think she had performed a FUNNY GIRL medley.

That said, I think Fantasia just had that indescribable vocal something that deserved to win.

I agree with Harry, too, although I loved Candice's rendition of "You've Changed." Harry pointed out what many of us who've been around for a while feel - LESS IS MORE! Too many of the young singers today over sing, do too many runs, totally miss the meaning of the lyrics and ignore melodies. Some have good chops, but misuse them.

Great article. Thanks for posting smark21.

Boy, I agree with you. It's not necessary to make a classic song sound like it was written in 2013. I tell my music students that they have to respect the melody that many classic songwriters came up with and they need to understand what a song is about. A lot of young singers want to add runs and trills and twists on syllables that are not necessary.

Here we go again! Angie ruined yet another serious ballad where less is more. She probably should have listened to Jimmy Scott's reading of one of his most requested songs in his show "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word" from his album "Holding Back The Years".

Thank you, Kam. Adding on syllables where they don't belong only serves to distort the songs. You're teaching your students well IMO.:)

Candice's performance of "Somewhere" last night was another Idol moment, and this yourng lady has had several of them. As Keith Urban said - Vote for Candice. I am so THRILLED for CANDICE!!!! I'm not surprised Kree made it to the final because she's had 3 bad weeks in a row, and yet she gets the votes. She's the country singer in the group and we've seen Idol voters give it to less than talented country singers before. I just hope real talent will win the prize this time. Word has it all four judges will not be returning in 2014. Good! Nicki makes me want to jump in thr TV and strangle her at times. What does a contestant's nice shoes have to with singing? Randy Jackson has already announced he's out. Harry Connick Jr. would be good as a judge. He was tough during standards week and he didn't kiss any ass. I don't expect Candice Glover to win because of what I posted previously. But if she does win, maybe IDOL still has a chance at maintaining credibility.
