I never seen this photo before. I can make out Mrs. Ross, Diana and Florence. And then is that Obie from the Four Tops in the back? Anyone know who the other woman is?

I have seen it before, I am sure that it was printed in either Diana's "Secrets of a Sparrow" autho-biography or in the "Call her Miss Ross book".

Haven't got any idea who the other woman is:confused:

I think the other lady is one of the Gordy sisters, but I am not sure.

An edited version of this photo appears in Diana's Missing You video; it is the final still picture in the video as a reference to her mother who had just passed away.

Yes it was taken at the Greystone Ballroom in Detroit at the 1963 Motown Christmas Party.

That is an adorable pic of Flo. Diana's mother is 47 in this picture - Diana certainly resembles her as she aged. Beautiful women.

This is also when Florence and Obie Benson were dating. I have and have seen other shots from this party.

I'd love to see some other shots from this. I guess Mrs. Ross traveled with them quite a bit - did she take the three of them under her wing? I guess that's why Diana has turned out to be such a great mother with having a roll model such as Ernestine.

I wouldn't go patting Diana Ross on the back. Ernestine and the mothers of the other
Supremes did not have anywhere near the financial resources Diane did when she "raised" her children. They no doubt could not afford the private schools, nannies, limos etc,etc when they were raising their children.

Show me a single mother working two jobs, raising any number of kids and sends them to college, keeping them on the right path into adulthood and I will give her a standing ovation any day over diana ross' raising of kids.....GEEZ!

alexgarret
03-02-2013, 06:44 PM
That's kind of bitter..Ernestine [[even without the "resources") did a great job with Diana. From what I have read all five of her kids are doing well. You want to begrudge her for that? It's not always about money, but about love - something apparently Ernestine taught Diana. We should all learn a lesson.

Look don't be daff or feign ignorance. You know darn well you were praising Diane and her raising of five kids. Read back when I said: " Ernestine and the mothers of the other

Now if you cannot understand what I wrote there in plain English, then you have a problem that I cannot help you with.

I don't need your help. I am curious as to what Diana did to you personally. From the thread on Eddie Unsung you were jumping up and down with joy about Eddie's wife's comments about Diana. Me and another person made the parallel of Mary [[who I love) and Tom Jones. And you shut up. They were young - we all had youthful indescrestions. Is this your reaction to all new members to this board?

You tell it Marv! Unreal. I dont find Diana girls gorgeous. Thye arer attractive in their own way, unique looking, but certainly not gorgeous IMO. Mrs Ross is often praised for being very fair vis a vis all the Supremes. One Supreme book had her speaking to Diana about the way she was treating Cindy and Mary and Diana admitted she was hard on them and displaced her frustration at Berry onto them.

Even before all the fame and number one hits they still looked like elegant superstars. The three of them [[Diana, Mary, Florence) sure knew how to present themselves. I wonder if Berry bought them those dresses? Florence said that he bought her some outfits in the early days whenever he saw something he thought "would look good on her" lol.

FloyJoy exactly! I've seen pictures of them from 1961, 62 and they were dressed like early 1960's fashion models! Taking it a step further, dressing nicely has long been a part of the Detroit culture for lack of a better word. Folks always at least tried to dress as sharp as possible when going out anywhere socially or to church there. The guys and the ladies put a lot of effort in their appearances.

Any poster who feels the need to critique the looks of the children of a Supreme needs to put their own children pics online or their own head shot and let the group critique them in the same way and see how it feels. There is no humor in bullying when people kill themselves daily due to a lack of self esteem or acceptance over their appearance. There's plenty of other topics related to Motown that can be picked apart without having to resort to this.

Maxine Powell:
"Well what happened… was that before I went into Motown when Barry wrote a song called, "Lonely Teardrops" and Jackie Wilson was the artist. And they showcased him in my downstairs ballroom as a fundraiser for George Edwards' campaign. So any time they had an artist after they got going before I went to Motown, they would have me come and watch the artist perform and then tell them what the artist needed. So when I did join the company in 1964 they asked me to open up a finishing school there - so I did. I opened in 1964 a finishing school, Motown Finishing School, and I worked with the artists on, first thing we worked with was - who are you? And, what makes you tick? I don't teach singing. So I also told the artists that, ah, they would, this department would groom and polish them so that they could appear in number one places around the country and even before the king and queen. Of course the youngsters, you know they came from humble beginning and some were rude and crude from the street and the projects. But with me, it isn't where you come from is where you're going. So I told them where they would be appearing. And they laughed and said that I was out of my mind because all they wanted was a hit record. And this is what we did, we worked with developing class."

I've always liked Maxine Powell and what she did at Motown. But we part ways when it comes to what 'class' is. I don't think it has anything to do with how you present yourself. It's how you yourself are, how you think, what's important to you, and how you treat others. I don't think it's something that can be taught. But it can be developed through experience. Show me someone who's sloppy and rough around all the edges and not formally educated but is genuinely kind and considerate toward others--and I'll see nothing but class.

I dont find Diana girls gorgeous. Thye arer attractive in their own way, unique looking, but certainly not gorgeous IMO.

Show us what "gorgeous" is. Post a pic of yourself! ;)

I was never keen on Diana's recording of MORE TODAY THAN YESTERDAY. Until now.

A YouTube poster named Tommy Lee has taken it and completely turned it around for me with a terrific video that he created. And I think it's terrific for the simple reason that he somehow knew exactly what to do with it--he knew exactly what it needed.

Since "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder," I'll just say: "Behold":

A lot of rich celebrities have kids with lots of issues - including Motown parents with kids in jail, on welfare or living unproductive lives. money IS an advantage but being raised by a celebrity is NOT. Ask Ryan O'Neil or Bing Crosby or many, many others. Ross was a working single mother for many years but what she taught her children no nannie can teach - to go for your dreams and to love and appreciate who and what you are. 5 unusually looking kids with 3 dads from 3 totally different cultures and they are all on point, make their own way and love each other fiercely. I commend ANY parent who raises ANY child successfully. You must not have kids to make such an ignorant and arrogant statement. Money is a great help to fend off starvation and the bill collectors but character, self assurance, dignity, personal responsibility are all taught. She didn't raise an internet stalker obsessed with a celebrity who spends HOURS every week stalking the web path of a celecrity they don't know and lying about them. She's better than that kind of parent at least.

Does anyone know where I can find this photo? Or Who the photographer or copyright holder is?

I never seen this photo before. I can make out Mrs. Ross, Diana and Florence. And then is that Obie from the Four Tops in the back? Anyone know who the other woman is?

I agree. Very pathetic.

I have never commented on some of the other similar threads but this thread is totally distasteful and disrespectful. The picture in the initial post is stunning in the most positive way to say the least.
